Boxer is used by Orwell to symbolize the working clas in the early twentieth century. Both Boxer and Clover are used to portray the working class, known then as the proletariat. Boxer and Clover are naturally drawn to Napoleon, (i.e. Stalin) because they think they will benefit from the new system. And because they don't have the highest intellegence, it is easy to persuade them to think that they are getting the good deal. Later in the story, it is shown how the work of the farm is decreased after Boxer, or the working class, falls sick. He is then double crossed and taken away to the horse slaughterer.
