By the late summer news of what happened on Animal Farm had spread across half the country. Every day Snowball and Napoleon sent out flights of pigeons whose instructions were to mingle with the animals on neighbouring farms, tell them the story of the Rebellion, and teach them the tune of Beasts of England.

Enter Mr. Pilkington, owner of the large, neglected, old-fashioned farm Foxwood; and Mr. Frederick, owner of a smaller, better kept farm Pinchfield. They were both thoroughly frightened by Animal Farm.

After the corn had been cut in early October, a flight of piegons came to Animal Farm, warning of Mr. Jones, his men, and half a dozen men from Pinchfield. The attack had been long awaited. Snowball, who had found a book of the campaigns of Julius Caesar in the farmhouse, was in charge of the defensive operations.

Once again, the animals fought hard for independance, and once again, the humans were driven away. All animals showed extreme courage and valour, although none as much as Snowball and Boxer. Boxer, a very large and strong horse, was one of the pigs' most devoted followers. The animals bestowed upon them their newly-created military decoration, "Animal Hero, First Class." They also made an "Animal Hero, Second Class," which they gave to a fallen sheep, killed by Jones in the heat of battle. The sheep was buried in the orchard next to Major.
