It was a hard and bitter winter. Work on the mill was slow, and food fell short. The animals knew it was vitally important to conceal this fact from the outside world. In order to have enough food to get them through the winter, Animal Farm had to obtain food from outside sources. To do this, they sold the eggs that the chickens laid. Unlike in the Jones Times, some of the chickens were happy to give up their eggs, because it was for there own benefit. Some of them. Others thought of it as murder.

In response to this, and the newly-discovered fact that Snowball had operatives in Animal Farm, by a serise of public mass executions.

After the executions, the animals began singing Beasts of England. Before they could finish, Squealer, accompanied by a detatchment of dogs, reported to them that Napoleon had abolished Beasts of England.
