Orwell had Mr. Jones represent the most obvious enemy to the animals in Animal Farm. Orwell does say that Jones was a "decent" master to his animals. The farm had in recent years been poorly kept, symbolizing the world wide Great Depression of the 30's. It seems that Mr. Jones symbolizes Czar Nicholas II, the leader before Stalin, who is portrayed by Napoleon. Jones represents the old government, the last of the Czars. A we see in the book, by Jones being drunk, it seems that Orwell suggests that Jones was kind of losing his sharpness. The animals continue with their rebellion and drive out Jones for ever.
