Some Herwijnen Residents
Roosa, de Jongh, de Fockert, Verploegh
and other related families
This study is not intended to include all members of these families; there are many branches that are not followed. It does attempt to gather together in one place the available data on some of the earlier families and to show the multiple links they had with one another. In the event you do not find the particular branch you are interested in, it is recommended that you conduct a search at
http://www.familysearch.org. The records found there in the Ancestral File - as they relate to Herwijnen - are very reliable, though not necessarily the way some families are found constructed here. This page last updated

abbreviations and a bit about naming patterns.A-I-a GOERT (Goirt/Geurt) (ROSA/ROOSA), bc 1510-25.
The most often repeated is the legend as to the forefathers of Geurt Aldertsz Rosa is that they fled from the town Rosa located in the Kingdom of Spain in the eastern part of the north of the province of Catalonia, Ampurdium. The 18th century antiquarian, Gijsbert Ariens Rijckhuijsen himself a Rosa descendant (A-VI-a) may have been the first to put this in writing and has often been quoted. What is often left out is that he himself did not seem take much stock in the story, saying also that the name may originally have been Roos, a Dutch name known in the area. (Bruijn, de, Enny," Genealogie in Herwijnen", Gens Nostra, 1998, pp. 22-44.)

The four children were all b Herwijnen and brought up at their parents’ homestead, which is now owned by ABRAHAM GIJSBERTSEN. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 9, fol. 316. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
On 11 May 1591 AERT THONISEN hands over to GHIJSBERT GOIRTSEN: the property and rights, that he and his wife BERTKEN have inherited in Herwijnen from his brothers-in-law BRUYSTEN and GOOSEN ALARTSEN. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 1244, fol. 60vso. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)

He appeared as a witness before the burgemeester and schepenen at Arnhem on 17 Feb 1552 at which time he identified himself as 'REIJNER JOOSTEN of Aeswijn, Lord of Brakel, priest'; relating that he had resided at Brakel when he was younger; he gave his age as 62. He lived in a house with a garden at Brakel that went to his son CORNELIS. A-II-a GIJSBERT GOERTTZEN (Geurtsz) (ROSA), bc 1550-7 of Herwijnen, d aft 27 Feb 1619, age at least 62, s/o A-I-a; m bef 29 Jul 1579 to MARIA (Marije) ALERTS, prob b bef in 1558 at Herwijnen, d aft 28 Apr 1615, d/o A-I-b.
The earliest record so far found mentioning Gijsbert Goirts is in 1579, at which time he is a m man. After which he is found on a regular basic buying and selling real estate as well as borrowing and lending money in the years 1581-1612; from these he appears to have been a man of substantial means. Church warden in the years 1612-1615. In 1616 and in 1619 he acted as guardian for the children of his deceased son ALERT GIJSBERTSZ. On 29 Jul 1579 GHIJSBERT GOIRTSEN, on behalf of his wife, sells to GHIJSBERT REYERSEN: half of 19 hont of land in Herwijnen, in Gheertkenshoeff (Geertjeshoef), adjacent above: the heirs of Goesen van Oenzelaer and below: Engbert Claesen, stretching from the Broickgraeff (Broekgraaf) to the Middelsloet (Middelsloot) . The other half of this property is owned by ARNT THONISEN. Security: his house and homestead in Herwijnen. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 1243, fol. 21vso. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
In one of the many transactions in which GIJSBERT GOIRTS is involved in he can be found on 15 Feb 1594 with an unusually large borrowing capacity: on that date he promises to pay GHIJSBERT ARIENSEN an annual interest of 60 guilders, commencing on 22 Feb 1595 which is redeemable by 1000 guilders. As security GIJSBERT GOIRTS puts up his house and yard with land in Herwijnen, inhabited by him. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no 1244, fol. 100. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
On the church membership list dated 25 Dec 1612 he and his wife Maria top the list of 22 church members. On 13 Jun 1615 GHIJSBERT GOERTSEN is given 400 guilders "being the surplus of his administration of the church property of Herwijnen." (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 1236, fol. 126. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
The following record is the last one found which indicates Gijsbert was still living: on 27 Feb 1619 acting as guardian for the children of his deceased son, ALDAERT GHIJSBERTSZ, leased 8 morgen of land in Herwijnen to several people. (Copye-brieven van Gijsbert van Rijckhuijsen, Municipal Archives of Leiden. Transcribed by G.E. Brederode.)
On 20 Jul 1630 HENDERICK DIRCKSEN FEYTER hands over to the heirs of GIJSBERT GOIRTSEN the inheritance, that he (Feyter) had obtained from his grandmother and was sold by him GIJSBERT GOIRTSEN. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no 1246, fol. 330vso. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
In none of the records found thus far has Gijsbert Goirts been found using a surname.

Nevertheless, it is not quite clear which Meerten de Jongh, this one or his grands/o the same name, found at A-III-s. (Van Rijckhuijsen transcripts, found referred to in certain Gens Nostra articles as "Copye-brieven", translated by Engel Roza)
Possibly the Meerten Ariensz/Adrianse de Jongh who was buurmeester of Herwijnen 1638-9.(Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra) He may have d in 1639 as his son, Cornelis Maartensz de Jongh is also found as buurmeester that year. From an extract of the register of manslaughters dated 1615 in the Benches of Tuil and Deil it is learned that Alart Gijsbertssen in Herwijnen was struck down by one called Jan Eelissen. (Archive Provincial Court of GL, no. 4830. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.) A thorough search for any records that might shed more light on this case was preformed by Mr. Nouwt without success. During the course of that search certain records were found which shed some light on the dates between which Alert d: On 10 Aug 1613 a note mentions that there is a legal action [pending] between Dirck van Huesden and Alart Ghijsbertsen. (Judicial Archive of Tuil, no. 7, fol. 77vso.) (Judicial Archive of Tuil, # 1249, folio 28. Translated by Marco Schelling.) Note: from this record it is not certain that Gijsbert Heijmonsz was a Rosa, but the likelihood seems strong.
Mentioned in Andel, NB (Oude Land van Altena) 1654, 1656 ; 1658. (Van Alphen, Evert, "Het Geslacht Rosa" [The Family Rosa], Gens Nostra, January 1965, p. 22-25.) Guardian to his sister Anneke's children.

Abraham was schepen High Court of Tuil, 1615, 1638, 1645; as Abraham Gijsberts performs his duties as schepen at the Bank of Tuil, his surname as 'Roosa', begins to be seen in the records, by 1638.
He served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1623 and as waardsman in 1632. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
He served as Buurmeester of Herwijnen with Cornelis Meertens de Jongh in 1647. (Van Alphen, Evert, "Het Geslacht Rosa" [The Family Rosa], Gens Nostra, January 1965, p. 22-25.)
Abraham received 5 1/2 hont land, situated in the "Geertgeshoeff" from Heijmans Gijsberts (his brother) in 1636. (Judicial Archives of Tuil. Translated by Marco Schelling.)
On 10 Oct 1630 he owned a property in Herwijnen that had belonged to his material grandparents. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 9, fol. 316. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)
The order of his children, and by which wife they were born is quite uncertain, the following seems to be a reasonable estimate, but may not be correct.
A number of Abraham's descentants later resided in Vuren and Rotterdam,

It is a phenomenon in certain Herwijnen families that a child name Govert may in life be found as Guert and visa versa, this appears to have been the case with Geurt Abrahamsz.

In 1591 it is said that he was the only heir of his father, GHIJSBERT OTTEN. He has never been found using a surname, but men have called him 'van Brakel'. JASPER HENDRICK and CORNELIS HENDRICHSEN witness for her and also making her strong for her other brothers and sisters promised tithes with the extra payment to prevent her goods from our country duty.
Appendix B, dated 28 Nov 1649: ANNEN HENDERICX with her elected guardian has according to her last and final will, desired, wanted and ordered that after her death all her real and personal property none of the excluded will be passed to her six children: JASPER, HENDERICK, AERT, CORNELIS, ISEBRAND and GEERTGEN, all born from her and HENDERICK CORNELISSEN. Also mentioned is Henderick Ariensen, minor child of MARIA HENDERICX with ARIEN JACOBSEN who will inherit equal with the uncles and aunts in case ANNEN shall live longer than her 'bestemoeder'. [The exact relationship of Maria Hendericx is unclear.] The before mentioned MARIA towards the marital status she is getting will also be given for her wedding some personal property, furniture, also horses and cows which may not be divided except for in case her son has no descendants, then the goods have to inherit to the line they came from, so the pre mentioned goods will stay in the family blood or in case HENDRERICK ARIENSEN lives longer than ANNEN and would still be a minor
then the close friends of ANNEN will accept the administration of the goods of the child and support without betrayal of someone else. From this marriage:

As his eldest daughter is called "jonge dochter van Herwijnen" when she m, it appears that he would have become a resident of that village prior to her birth.

Appears on the church membership list of about 1645.
From this marriage:
A-III-s MAERTEN ARIESEN DE JONG(H), bc 1603 at Herwijnen, s/o A-III-e. He may be the Marten Arissen, j.m. of Herwijnen, m 14 Mar 1627 at Herwijnen to MARIKEN JANS, j.d. of Herwijnen. Mariken was prob bc 1607 at Herwijnen.
There were two Meertens who appear to have been about the same age, living and having families in Herwijnen about the same time. (The other is Meerten van Arendonk discussed at A-IV-an.) Due to the apparent age difference of his eldest son and that of the next known, it appears that he may well have had two wives, but it is unclear if she was in fact Mariken Jans.
Probably the Meerten Adriaansz Jongh who served as waardsman in 1634. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", p. 36, published by Gens Nostra)
Likely the MAARTEN ADRIAAN DE JONG who was curator and administrator of the Drakenburg for AGNETA VAN HEMERT in the 1660s. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 72.)
Likely the "MARTEN ADRIAN DEN JONGH" residing at Herwijnen when the mandatory loan was levied for the fortification of the area as found on the list of well-to-do residents. (Heeswijk, van, J. H. G. J., "Een Onderzoek naar de Gegoedheid van de Plattelandsbevolking van de Bommeler- en Tielerwaard", Gens Nostra, Jan., 1954, pp. 138-41.)
His son from what appears to have been a previous marriage (there may have been others):
Hendrik Meertens de Jongh together with Jan, Arien & Lauerens Meertenz Arendonk each held an undivided quarter interest in a certain property in Herwijnen. (Polder Records, LDS film # 0875820)
Probably the Hendrik de Jongh who had two daughters born in the early 1660s, see A-IV-at.
Maerten was prob m (2) MARIKEN ALLERTS KEMPEN.
The Rijckhuijsen transcripts mention Marike Allerts Kempen as the wife of a Maerten Ariens de Jongh. It is unclear from his notes as to which Maerten Ariens she m. Even though this couple is sometimes noted as the parents of Beerntje Maertens (see A-II-d) it seems more probable that she m this Maerten, bc 1603. (Van Rijckhuijsen MSS, found referred to in certain Gens Nostra articles as "Copye-brieven", translated by Engel Roza)
From this marriage:
It would make sense for this Alard to be s/o Mariken Alerts Kempen, though his patronymic name is not found in the marriage record.
Arien was the tax collector at Zaltbommel, GL. He and Johanna had at least one son, Maerten, b 1704. Arien is said to have been somewhat older when his son was born and d when his son was young. (Correspondence to Gijsbert van Rijckhuijsen, translated by Engel Roza) The boy b 1704 became the Reverend Maerten Adriense de Jongh, noted Dutch Reformed preacher of Amsterdam. (De Young, Dirk P., "Notes on the Rosa-DeJongh Families", The New York Genealogical And Biographical Record, January 1939)
The Reverend wrote a letter to Gijsbert van Rijckhuijsen in which he explains that his father d when he was a young child and that the job of his father as collector-of-taxes in Zaltbommel was taken over by the Reverend’s much older cousin Martinus. According to notes in Rijckhuijsen's transcripts, Rijckhuijsen could not prove to his satisfaction the relationships the Reverend had written to him about. (ibid., Van Rijckhuijsen, translated by Engel Roza)
The polder records of 1746 show a number of lots, which had previously been transferred to various individuals from "de Jong(h) the tax collector". In the previous set of polder records, undated but presumed to have been made about 1685, these lots and several others where held by Heer de Jongh (no further identity given). (Polder Records of Herwijnen, LDS film 0875820)
A-III-t CORNELIS JANS OSKAM, bc 1600 of Ameide, ZH and later of Herwijnen; m MARIGJE JANS, bc 1603 of Ameide, ZH and later of Herwijnen.
From this marriage:
A-III-u SANDER [possibly ROS/ROSCH], prob b bef 1590 of Herwijnen.

the Sander Henricksen who m 1611-12 at Herwijnen to Maricken Hermens of Heukelum. As Sander Handricks, widower, married 21 Apr 1617 at Herwijnen to (2) Maijken Toenis, j.d. of Heukelum. This is the only Sander found in the Herwijnen church records from this period.Or Jacob Sandersz [Ros/Rosch] may have been a brother of the above Sander. Jacob Sandersz married at Herwijnen on 24 Jul 1608 to Ariken Jans of Herwijnen. Jacob had at least two children: Sander Jacobz Ros(ch) who as a j.m. of Hellouw married 28 Mar 1668 to (1) Truijken Eijments of Herwijnen, married 23 Jan 1669 to (2) Elske Everts of Hellouw; and Geertuij Jacobsdr Ros(ch) who married at Herwijnen on 27 Apr 1661 to Geenlof Gijsberts Verhaal of Herwijnen. There may have been other children as well, but they have not been found to use the name Ros(ch). Jacob Sandersz can also be found on the church membership list of 1645 with a wife (unidentified). Jacob Sandersz served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1632 and 1649. And as Jacob Sandersz Ros he was schepen for Herwijnen in 1646-7. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-37, published by Gens Nostra)
His children from an unknown woman:
Anthonis Sandersz served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1686-7 and 1689. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra) Antonis Sanderz was taxed on various polder rights in 1680-86 by himself and in connection with others: his sister Dirsken; Tomis Herber[tsz]; and Me vrouw de Bie heir has owner of/from Jan Dirckz children 3 mergen and the widow of Geurt Abramse and Alert Otts and Sander Tomisse or his widow. (Polder Records of Herwijnen, LDS film #0875820)
A-III-v WOUTER OTTENS, b 1556 of Herwijnen, d aft 10 Oct 1630.
4 Dec 1592 no doubt the one mentioned in a sale of property: Arien Jorisen and Frederick Jansen, also on behalf of Wourter Otten, sell to Gijsbert Goirtsen 1 1/2 morgen of land in Herwijnen across the 'Broekgraef' in 'Rolofshoeff'. (Judicial Archive of Tuil, no. 1244, fol. 96vso, transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt)
Wouter Otten testified as a witness on 10 Oct 1630, that he was then 74 years of age. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 9, fol. 316. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.) In 1616 he was waardsman at Herwijnen. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 36-37, published by Gens Nostra)
His children from an unknown woman:
A-III-w WILLEM, bc 1583 of Hellouw, GL.
His children from an unknown woman:
A-III-x GEURT (Goirt) DE ROUW, b bef 1578 of Herwijnen.

It is certain that the family Ho(o)gerwerff belonged to the old closed circle of well-to-do agrarians from which
came the local governors of the area; his son and at least two of his grandson serving as schout of Zuilichem in their time. Baijen and Trijnje are reported to have had several children, though their names have not yet been discovered. (Dingemans, W.H., "De Jongh (Bommelerwaard), Gens Nostra, June 1993, p. 314.)From this marriage:
A-III-aa JOOSTEN GERRITS BERGAKKER, bc 1621 of Meteren, GL, d bef 28 Mar 1693, age abt 72 years; m MARIKEN CORNELISDR, bc 1625.
Bergacker is a spelling variation. Joost was a member of the elders and deacons of the Dutch Reformed Church at Meteren. He also served as an alderman of Meeteren where he owned a piece of land called de Berghacker. The youngest daughter is recorded as having been "of Meeteren" when she married in 1681 at Herwijnen. Unfortunately the earlier church register at Meeteren have not survived, the oldest beginning in 1777.
From this marriage:

"These three brother were half-brothers of Geurt Alerts Roosa, according to testimony made to me by Gerrit Jansz Roosa." (Van Rijckhuijsen transcripts, found referred to in certain Gens Nostra articles as "Copye-brieven", translated by Engel Roza)

A-III-ad A(D)RIAN JORISZ DE JONGH, prob bc 1570, of Herwijnen.

(Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 1244, fol. 96, transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.) As Arien Jorissen he served as waardsman for Herwijnen in 1634. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", p. 36, published by Gens Nostra)
His sons from an unknown woman:
He was probably the father of Jan Jansz de Jongh who was buurmeester at Herwijnen in 1684-5. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
On 11 Jan 1631 Adriaen Evertsen Groot, heir of Jan Adriensen Groot, conveyed land in Herwijnen to Adrian Adriensen Joriszoon de Jongh. (De Young, Dirk P., "Notes on the Roosa-De Jongh Families", The New York Biographical Genealogical Record, 1939, p. 34)
As Joris Ariensen de Jongh he made a conveyance of land in Herwijnen on 26 Apr 1632 and gave as security for the contract his interest in the estate of his grandfather, Joris Ariensen de Jongh. (ibid., De Young)
A-III-ae V/FRANCK MEERTENS [DE JONGH], prob bc 1594-99, of Herwijnen, s/o A-II-d; m there 5 Jun 1625 to HEIJLKEN HENDRICKS of "Heesakkar".
Vranck Meertens de Jongh was one of the co-signers of the marriage contract between Engeltjen Ariens de Jongh and Geurt Aldert Rosa in June 1638. He is also mentioned in the Van Rijckhuijsen manuscript as a brother of Arien, Cornelis and Beerntje de Jongh. (Van Rijckuijsen MSS, Archive of Leijden; transcribed and translated by Engel Roza)
The only indication of his children is from records found of his grandchildren.
Probable sons from this marriage:
Willemke Dirks Fracken held polder rights in Herwijnen in the 1680s. (LDS film #0875820)
Lijntje Dirx de Jongh, y.d. of Herwijnen married there 8 May 1680 Cornelis Thijse Bentem, y.m. of Herwijnen.
Jenneke Francke de Jongh, y.d. of Herwijnen married there on 21 Apr 1680 to Jan Jans of Waardenburg, [GL] widower of Willemke Pelle. Jenneke Francke held polder rights in Herwijnen in the 1680s.

A very important document has been located in the Van Rijckhuijsen MSS which helps a great deal in figuring out some of the de Jongh line. (Van Rijckuijsen MSS, Archive of Leijden; transcribed by Engel Roza) This is the marriage contract between Geurt Alertsen Rosa and Engeltgen Ariens de Jongh. Signing second to last and last where the public offices Boudewijn van de Velde and J. Holl, schout.

Found on Herwijnen church membership list of about 1645, with his wife and mother. Resided in a house with a tile roof called De Twee Paarden, "The Two Horses", said to have been built in 1651 with what was described as a 'painted glass' - presumably a stained glass window - on which a family crest showing two horses and some weapons and could be seen in the year 1660. (Van Zee, Engel, Family Genealogy, unpublished ca. 1843.) This wife, Engeltgen, mentioned as widow in the spring of 1672. (Van Heeswijk, J. H. G. J., "Een Onderzoek naar de Gegoedheid van de Plattelandsbevolking van de Bommeler- en Tielerwaard", Gens Nostra, 1954, p. 138-41.)
Their marriage does not appear in the Herwijnen church record, no marriages are recorded between 1630-1645. It is given in Treffers' Gens Nostra 1982 article and in Engel van Zee's family genealogy, as were the birth dates of their children. Engeltgen provided the marriage information for her son Jan when he married 27 Jul 1680.

A-IV-c WALRAVEN OTTENSZ DE ROOMER, bc 1620/25 of HERWIJNEN, s/o A-III-ac; m MAEIJKE BERENTSE BOOM.
Walraven Ottensz de Roomer is mentioned as having been from Vrieslandt [Friesland, province of the NTH] d in Herwijnen, left behind three sons. (ibid., Van Rijckhuijsen, translated by Engel Roza)
From this marriage:
Otto had two sons: 1) Walraven d 16 Dec 1739; 2) Arij, a market-porter, still living in Rotterdam. (ibid., Van Rijckhuijsen, translated by Engel Roza)
He may also have had a son Gerrit, for Gerrit Otto's children (unnamed) held polder right in Herwijnen in 1680/90. (LDS film #0875820) Also Rijckhuijsen mentions a Gerrit Otten in connection with the De Roomer family, though his exact relationship is not given.
"Gerrit" left behind one son, Walraven, who sailed to war as a skipper. (ibid., Van Rijckhuijsen, translated by Engel Roza.)
A-IV-d AELDERT (Alert/Albert) HEIJMANS ROSA, bc 1616-17 of Herwijnen, d 27 Feb 1679 at Esopus (Hurley), Ulster Co. (NY), age abt 58, s/o A-III-b; m WIJNTJE (Wilhelmina) ARIENS DE JONGH, bc 1621 of Herwijnen, d 28 Oct 1686 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York, age abt 65, d/o A-III-e.

AL(D)ERT HEIJMANSZN ROSA with his wife, WIJNTJE ARIENSDR DE JONGH, with eight children immigrated on the ship "Bontekoe" (Spotted Cow) in the spring of 1660 to New Amsterdam.
The age of each child - without given names - can be found on the http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nnship22.shtml Bontekoe manifest. The children's ages were given as 17, 15, 14, 9, 8, 7, 4, and 2. They are believed to have had two other children after arriving in New Amsterdam, both believed to have d young. For more information about these families see Sheila Soto's web site.On 28 Feb 1660, prior to departure, ALERT HEYMANS, yeoman of Herwijnen, gives ARIAEN ARIAENS DE JONGH, power of attorney to handle his affairs. (De Young, Dirk P., "Notes on Roosa-De Jongh Families", The New York Genealogical And Biographical Record (The Record), January 1939, 226 West 58th. Street, New York.) In this article Wijntie is called Wilhelmina. It also states that Arian Ariaens de Jongh was Alert Heymans' brother-in-law. However, from the translation of that document the relationship between these two men is not described. In another document - dated 22 Mar 1664 - after Alert has been in America for awhile, an Arien Ariens de Jongh promises to pay 33 guilders on a certain debt of Alert Heymansz Rosa, in which he calls Alert "mijn oom" (my uncle). See A-IV-n for further details.
Their marriage is not found in the Herwijnen church records, no marriages are recorded between the years 1630 and 1645.
The approximated dates of birth of their children as follows, are assumed from the Bontekoe manifest as found in the 1938 The Record article, except where noted.
From this marriage:
Presumed to be the child - age 7 - on the ship manifest. (Roney, James., "Roosa Notes", The Record, October 1938, p. 307)
A baptism for a NEELKE ALERTS is found in Herwijnen on 5 Nov 1655, where Arien Huijbertse and Neelken Ariens de Jongh are found as witnesses (not JAN ABRAHAMS ROSA as previously reported). On closer examination of this record the mother is recorded as Wijlken, not "Heijlke" as previously report. (Transcribed by Engel Roza) In the spring of 1660 she would have been 4 years of age.

There is a notation in the Van Rijckhuijsen manuscript that the Anneke Ariens who married A(l)ert Abrahams Rosa was a de Jongh. (Van Rijckhuijsen MSS, Archive of Leijden, transcribed and translated by Engel Roza) Just where she fits into the de Jongh line is a bit of a puzzle, the best guess, with the information at hand, is that she was the d/o Arien Ariens Jorisz de Jongh and Arike Adriaens de Jongh.
No doubt the AERT ABRAHAM ROSA to whom a loan was given by MARGARETHA BICKER between 1660-77. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 64.)

It has been reported that the AART ANTONIESE forefathers escaped from France in the year 1522. (Gens Nostra, 1982; and Van Zee, Engel, unpublished genealogy ca. 1843.)
In an action filed 6 Sep 1638 at the High Court of Tuil, AERT ANTONIS DE FOCKERT is described as "machtig", which translates to powerful, mighty, tremendous, and/or rich. (Meijden, van der, V., "Oude Geslachten Uit de Bommelerwaard en Aangrenzende Gebieden," Gens Nostra, October 1969, pp. 297-302.) This same article is also the source for the information about Aert's first family as well as giving the surname of Aert's second wife.

Aart Cornelisse de Jongh was previously reported on this page at A-IV-g as the brother of Arien. However, it is probable that they are one in the same person. There are instances in other families where Aart is a synonym for Arien/Adriaen.
An Arien Cornelisz [NN] served as buurmeester at Herwijnen in 1659. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)

From this marriage:
A-IV-m MAEIJKE ARIENS DE JONG(H), bc 1627 of Herwijnen, d in 1674 at Herwijnen, d/o A-IV-n; as Mariken Ariens j.d. of Herwijnen m there 6 Feb 1648 to CORNELIS FREDERICKSE, j.m. of Hellouw. However, it seems that this may be an error. It is believed that her true husband was CORNELIS HENDRICKS [VERPLOEGH], who was also from Hellouw. If so, this Cornelis would have been bc 1620 at Hellouw, GL, d in the year 1694, s/o A-III-g.
In an article on the Verploegh family it states that Cornelis Hendricks Verploegh married Mariken Ariens on 6 Feb 1648. It said that she is 'presumably' the daughter of Arien Cornelis Meertens (Van Baalen, D., "Verploegh", Gens Nostra, 1960, pp. 153-165). However, upon close examination this compiler believes she seems to be more likely the daughter of A(d)riean Ariens Jorisz. For one thing, she and Arien Cornelisse seem be too close in age for him be her father; for another her daughter Ariken appears to be named for Mariken's mother, Arijken. She was reported previously on this page to probably have been the daugher of A(d)riean Meertens (A-III-e), that is no long believed to be the case for a number of reasons. Please see notes for Arien Ariens Jorisz at A-V-g for the full explanation.
CORNELIS HENDRICKS was described as a 'huistimmerman' (house builder) and "molenmaker" (builder of mill works). He continued to resided at Hellouw where Cornelis had extensive property. He lived in the house called 'de zak' (the Sack). Cornelis appears to have been one of the wealthier men of his day and a community leader. He was a schepen (advisor) and buurmeester. When the water mills of Hellouw needed repair and reconstruction in 1686 Cornelis put up his house and nearby property as collateral for the loan. He was also commissioner of the horse expedition, master builder and contractor of horse cannons, accorded in 1678 the delivery of 70 horses, in 1689 of 50 and periods in 1691 surety for 500 horses. (ibid., Van Baalen)
His name appears in the 1672 list of well-to-do citizens. (Heeswijk, van, J. H. G. J., "Een Onderzoek Naar De Gegoedheid Van De Plattelandsbevolking Van De Bommeler- en Tielerwaard", Gens Nostra, 1954, pp. 138-141.)

A-IV-n A(D)RIAEN ADRIEANSE [JORISZ] DE JONGH, prob b bef 1600 of Herwijnen, s/o A-III-ad. [Previously reported on this page - in error, it is now believed - as s/o Arien Meertens de Jongh (A-III-e).]
On 11 Jan 1631 Adriaen Evertsen Groot, heir of Jan Adriensen Groot, conveyed land in Herwijnen to Adrian Adriensen Joriszoon de Jongh. (De Young, Dirk P., "Notes on the Roosa-De Jongh Families", The New York Biographical Genealogical Record, 1939, p. 34)
Since the publication of certain articles which appeared in The New York Biographical and Genealogical Record (The Record) 1927, 1938 and 1939 it has been generally accepted that ARIAEN ARIENS DE JONGH was the brother-in-law of ALERT HEYMANS. This assumption was based on a document in which Alert Heymans gave a power of attorney to Ariaen Adriaenss, dated 28 Feb 1660, prior to Alert's departure for New Netherland. However, the translation of this 1660 document, which appeared in the earlier article of The Record, does not describe the relationship between the two men:
Judicial Archives of Tuil, Folio 19 verso ; folio 20 "Power of Attorney of Alardt Hemans to Adriaen Adriaenss, D'Jong" (De Boer, Louis P., LL.B, AM, The Record, April 1927, pp. 149-150):
"Elias Leeuw (Notary Public) declares that ALARDT HEYMANS, yeoman at HERWYNEN, having in mind to transport himself with his family, next month to NIEUW NETHERLANDS, appoints ADRIAEN ADRIAENSS, D'JONG, also at Herwynen, to manage, to administer and to guard in his name all his goods, houses, lands and acres, none excepted belonging to him at present, or still due to him through inheritance or otherwise; to give the same out in rent and lease for a certain term of years; to demand and to collect, to accept and to receive the annual income thereof, and all other proceedings as claims, credit, rents, etc., due to him, the constituent, now and of years past, as well as of years to come;-to give receipt for payments, and if necessary to use judicial compulsion upon the debtors. Further to act for him in all law suits which may result therefrom be it as plaintiff or defendant, before all lords, judges, courts and benches, or whosoever administers justice; to observe all the rules of justice and if demanded, to appoint other Powers-of-Attorney in his own place.
"Further gives he, the constituent, to the said ADRIAEN ADRIAENSS complete and irrevocable power to sell the named goods, lands, acres and rights, to convey the property to the purchaser or purchasers, divesting, thereby him, the constituent, according to the laws of our city and country (BOMMEL), guaranteeing full transfer thereof with his person and goods as guarantee; to restitute to purchase the part of the rents due to him; to give legal receipt to the purchaser before the magistrate; to accept the purchase sums or interest on the installments, and also to give receipt thereof.
"And further to do in, general all that which the constituent himself, if present, could or might do, even if in normal cases, the matter might require special personal instruction; the constituent hereby confirming the above stated appointment.
"And the constituent promises hereby to maintain, and to cause to be maintained as legal and of value, all and everything done by the said ADRIAEN ADRIAENSS, D'JONG, or his substitutes, as if he had done and transacted the same himself, without protesting against it, either directly or indirectly either in or out of Court. All under guarantee of his person and his goods."
From a document, dated just four years later it becomes clear that some calculations
were left out of the mix in the De Jongh genealogy. In this document dated 22 Mar 1664 Arien Ariensz de Jongh promised to pay 33 guilders to Ida, widow of Coirstiaen Auwels, on a debt of Alert Heymans Roosa. In it Arien identifies Alert Heymans as "mijn oom" [my uncle]. (Judicial Archives of Tuil #202, folio 103, A2, transcribed by the Bureau voor Histroisch Onderzoek, Zutphen, translated by Marco Schelling.) Thus it stands to reason that the Arien Ariens de Jongh who was given Power of Attorney was not this man, his brother-in-law, but this man's son who could rightly call Alert Heyman's his uncle. An Arien Ariens de Jongh is found to have been a buurmeester in Herwijnen in 1630, 1645, and 1660. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra) It seems probable that this Arien Ariens was at least buurmeester in 1645 (and possibly in 1660). While it is certainly possible that he is also the one who served in 1630, it must be noted that customarily such a position was usually held by a man of more mature years.
It is now believed that he is the A(d)rijaen [A(d)rijaens] Jorisz found in the Herwijnen church records as having m there on 23 Apr 1626 to ARIJKEN ARIEN MEERTENS [DE JONGH].
In the church book the groom of Arijken is given as Arijaen Jorisz. However, the groom should correctly have been recorded as A(d)rijaen A(d)rijaens [Jorisz de Jongh]. The proof of this is in a transcript recently located which mentions Adriean Adrianens is the momber (guardian) of his housewife, daughter of the late Arien Meertens. (Judicial Records of Tuyl, dd. Nov 10, 1663, on a case dated Jan 13, 1645, transcribed and translated by Engel Roza)
Arijken then would have been bc 1604 of Herwijnen, the d/o A-III-e.

There is no question that Metje was the daughter of a Meerten de Jong. If she was in fact born about 1660-65 and the daughter of Meerten Ariens, her father would have been 60+/- years of age when she was born. This, together with the fact that she did not name either of her daughters after there maternal grandmother leaves some room for doubt that she was the daughter of Maerten Ariens.

A-IV-ak LEONARDT (Lenaert) BAIJENS (HOOGERWERFF), bc/ aft 1596 of Zuilichem, GL, d aft 19 Jun 1653, s/o A-III-z; m bef 25 Feb 1629, to ANTHONISKEN MATHIJS (VAN ANDEL), bc 1600, d aft 2 Feb 1653.
Leonardt is mentioned as under age in 1613. He resided at Zuilichem where the records show he owned farmland and an orchard and/or garden near Meidijk in the neighborhood of the Poederoijen mill. (Dingemans, W.H., "De Jongh (Bommelerwaard)", Gens Nostra, June 1993, p. 315.)
From this marriage:
A-IV-al WALRAVEN
FRANSEN [KOCK (De Cock)], bc 1625.His children from an unknown woman:
Marij Walravens held three polder rights in the mid 1680s. Joost Walravens subsequently transferred one of these to Heer Bierman prior to 1746. (Polder records, LDS film #0875820)
A-IV-am CLAAS LEENDERTSZ VAN ZEE, bc 1605-10 of Heukelum, ZH, d 1662, age approximately 52 to 57; mc 1647 to MAIJKE CLAESZ, bc 1624 of Heukelum, ZH.
Claas' father, LEENDERT BASTIAENSZ, can be found in Heukelum, ZH as early as 1591. In 1599 he is found with the last name "de Zeeu". Leendert's father, CLAAS LEENDERTSZ resided at Heukelum, where in 1630 he was
shepen, in 1643 on the dike-reserve and in 1647 is identified as burgermeester. For more information about these earlier see Van Zees of Heukelum. From this marriage, among others:
A-IV-an MEERTEN VAN ARENDONK, bc 1600 of Herwijnen, he appears to have d aft Jul 1670.
There were two Meertens in Herwijnen who appear to have been about the same age, living and having families in Herwijnen about the same time. (The other was Maerten Ariens de Jongh discussed at A-III-s.) The name of Meerten van Arendonk's father has not as yet been discovered. It is possible that he was the Marten Arissen, j.m. of Herwijnen who m there on 14 Mar 1627 to Mariken Jans, j.d. of Herwijnen. He did have two granddaughters who were given the name Mariken and besides having a son Jan, he also appears to have had a son named Arien:
Jan, Arien and Laurens Meetens van Arendonk together with Hendik Meertens de Jongh each held an undivided interest in a certain property in Herwijnen in the 1680s. Hendrik de Jongh's interest in this property may have been a result of his marriage a few years before to Corstiaan Meertens van Arendonk's widow Barbara Valken. Jan Meertens' widow subsequently transferred this property in two parcels, one to Gerrit Hendriks Verploegh and the other to Meerten van Arendonk, they held the rights to these properties in 1746.
By 1778 both lots were in the possession of Hendrik Gerrits Verploegh. (Polder Records, LDS film #0875820)The absence of Heelken, Gerrit and Peter in the above mentioned polder record seems odd. The brothers Peter and Gerrit are found, again in those polder records, with an undivided interest together with a child(ren) of Abraham Cornelisse [van Diest]. Abraham van Diest being their brother-in-law having married Heelken Meertense some years earlier. These facts seem to indicate the possibility that their father may have been married twice.
Meerten is found as a witness to the baptism of two of his granddaughter: On 4 Oct 1668 for Marij Petersdr van Arendonk and on 31 Jul 1670 for Marike Corstiaensdr [van Arendonk].
His children from an unknown woman:
Jan Meertensen van Arendonk witnessed the baptism on 17 Jan 1664 for a child of Abraham Cornelisse v Diest & Hellken Maerten van Arendonk.
A-IV-ao GIJSBERT ARIENSE NOOT(E)BOOM, bc 1615 of Herwijnen.
Found on the Herwijnen church membership list of about 1645, as Gijsbert Ariense Nooteboom, with wife.
Served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1655 with Aert/Alaerdt Heymansz [Roosa]. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
From the records of about 1685 it is learned that Gijsbert Nooteboom held polder rights to fourteen parcels. All of these were transferred to mevrouw van den Steen and mevrouw Piggelens jointly. (Polder records, LDS #0875820)
His children from an unknown woman:
A-IV-ap JACOB AARTS VAN DUSSELDORP, bc 1632 of Herwijnen.
His children from an unknown woman:
A-IV-aq JOHAN VAN ECK, bc 1650-55, d bef April 1741.
DR. JOHAN VAN ECK was burgemeester of Zaltbommel and director of the Tielerwaard. He purchased the Drakenburg on 3 Mar 1678. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 75.)
His daughter from an unknown woman:
A-IV-ar HERMEN SALOMONS (VALK), bc 1606 at Vuren, GL. As j.m. of Vuren m 17 Jan 1630 at Herwijnen, to NIELETIEN JANS, young woman of Herwijnen. Nieletien was prob bc 1610 at Herwijnen.
From this marriage:
Probably the same Solomon Hermans Valk who with, Teuntje Cornelis van Bommel, were witnesses at the baptism of Cornelis Jan Alertsz on 7 Mar 1669 at Herwijnen.
A-IV-as CORNELIS VAN HERWIJNEN, bc 1585 of Herwijnen.
His sons from an unknown woman:

A-IV-aw GIJSBERT WILLEMS DE CLODDER, bc 1639 at Herwijnen; m there 16 Apr 1664 to GIJSBERTJE TEUNISSE [poss COCK] of Vuren. Gijsbertje prob bc 1643 at Vuren, GL.
Gijsbert de Clodder held rights to six polder lots in about the 1685 time frame. These were subsequently passed on to his son Willem and daughter Geertien and on eventually to their heirs. (Polder records, LDS film 0875820)
From this marriage:
Geertien appears to have still been living in 1746 when the widow of Jacob Dircks held a certain polder lot, which had previously belonged to Gijsbert de Clodder.
Geertje was no doubt Gijsbertje's sister-in-law, having m Cornelis Teunisse Cock a few years earlier.

His sons from an unknown woman:
A-IV-be ARIE JANS DE CLEIJN (Kleijn), bc 1620 of Herwijnen, d bef Sep 1663; m LIJSBET PETERS, bc 1625 of Herwijnen.
No marriages are recorded in the Herwijnen church register between 1630-1645, likely the period in which this couple's marriage would have taken place.
From this marriage:
Jan Arisen Cleijn served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1684-5. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
Lijsbet Peters, widow of Arien Jansen Cleijn, m 5 Sep 1663 at Herwijnen to (2) JAN AARTSE COCK, widower of Jenneken Dircx. Jan was prob bc 1625, see A-IV-bf.
A-IV-bf JAN AERTS COCK, bc 16
18 of Herwijnen; m (1) JENNEKE DIRKS, bc 1622 of Herwijnen, d bef Sep 1663.Mr. van Resandt in his article suggests that Jan Aerts Cock is from Vuren and the brother of Lambert Aerts Cock (A-V-cd); that Jan was probably married with Jenneke about 1640; however, no proof of either statement is offered. (Resandt, van, W. Wijnaendts, "De afstamming van het tot den Nederlandschen adel behoorende geslacht de Kock", Nederlandsche Leeuw, 1936, pp. 403-409)
Jan Aertsz [de] Cock served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1659. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
From this marriage:
These two testify before the Schepens at Tuil on 21 Sept 1665 in favor of their father to the exclusion of their step-mother. (ibid., Resandt) By this act it seems warrented to move Aert's birth back a few years, and so his parents.
Jan Aartse Cock, widower of Jenneken Dirx, m 5 Sep 1663 at Herwijnen to (2) LIJSBET PETERS, widow of ARIEN JANSEN CLEIJN, see A-IV-be. Lijsbet was prob bc 1630 of Herwijnen.

A-IV-bi CHRISTOFFEL "TIEL" VAN STERRENBERGH, m 12 Nov 1645 at Haaften, GL to GRICTHEN GEURTS, widow of JOOST VAN GELEEN.
A STOFFEL AERTS married 22 Mar 1623 at Herwijnen to BELYKEN WOUTERS of Deil, GL. As the widower of Beliken Wouten of Hellouw, Stoffel Aerts married 11 Jul 1627 at Haaften, GL to (2) NEELTJE JANS, widow of Huijbert Peters of Haaften. Whether or not these were earlier marriages of Christoffel or perhaps his father is so far unverified. A Stoffel Aerts had had an interest in half a polder in Herwijnen, which had been transferred to Gerrit de Hattum prior to the 1680-90 reporting, the other half belonged to Mevrouw Bijstervelt. (LDS film #0875820)
They were likely the parents of:
A-IV-bj GERRIT GEURTSZ, bc 1620, s/o A-III-ab; m (1) VAN DEN OVER; m (2) MARIA VALCKEN.
From this second marriage:
A-V-a AELTJE GOVERTS VAN HOLT, bp 1 Nov 1632 at Geldermalsen, GL, d 14 Sep 1716 at Herwijnen, age 83, d/o A-IV-a; m 1 Mar 1663 at Deil, GL (banns published 1 Feb 1663), (age 30) to (1) GIJSBERT JANSEN VAN RIJCKHUIJSEN, (or Rijckhlickhuijsen), bc 1628, d 24 Jul 1674, s/o A-IV-ah.
When married at Deil, GL he was described as 'young man, carpenter of Herwijnen'. Bruijn uses the term 'gemeenelandts-timmerman' (common-lands carpenter).
From this marriage:
Aeldert/Aallert/Ary van Rijckhuijsen served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1698-1703 and waardman between 1708-10. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-37, published by Gens Nostra)
The widow Aaldert van Rijkhuijsen is found holding various lots in the 1746 and 1760 polder records. (Polder records, LDS film #0875820)
On previous versions of "Herwijnen Residents" some of the children mentioned above - Ariken, Mariken, Aelert, and Arien (bp 20 Feb 1669) - were reported erroneously as the children of Eelke Lamberts Cock and Gijsbert Jans. The names given to these children and the witnesses at the baptisms strongly indicate that they were more closely connected to the Ro(o)sa family. Aaltje Goverts van Holten's mother was Maria (Mariken) Alderts Rosa, the witness to the 20 Feb 1669 baptism. (Thank you Engel Roza for your tenacity in sorting this out!)
Aeltje m 7 Mar 1675 at Hellouw, GL (age 42) to (2) CORNELIS HENDRICKS VERPLOEGH, bc 1622 of Hellouw, GL, d 1694, age abt 72 years, s/o A-III-g. Cornelis was previously m on 6 Feb 1648 at Herwijnen (age 26) to (1) MARIKEN ARIENS DE JONGH, bc 1625 of Herwijnen, see A-IV-m.

Arien was schepen at the Court of Tuil. (Treffers, E.W., "Geslacht Boom der familie Roosa", Gens Nostra, 1982.)
He served as waardsman for Herwijnen in 1685. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 36-37, published by Gens Nostra)
In the polder records, which appear in the 1685 time period, Arien Geurtz Rosa held a polder right to a certain property that he had received from Jan Sterck, presumably his wife's grandfather. (Polder records, LDS film 0875820)
Arike was the witness at the baptism of her niece, Jenneke Ariens [Geurtsz] Rosa, on 19 Jan 1679.
From this marriage:

Jan was buurmeester and deacon at Herwijnen in 1692 and schepen of Herwijnen in 1700. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", pp. 78 ; 86b.) As Jan Geurtsz Rosa it is confirmed that he served as buurmeester in 1692-3, he was also waardsman for Herwijnen in 1696-8. Probably two of his sons, Geurt (Govert) and Gerrit were also waardsmannen for many years: 1712-13, 1718-19, 1724-26, 1732-33, 1746-48. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-37, published by Gens Nostra)
From this marriage:

Resided in Leyden, ZH where he worked on a beer wagon. (ibid., Treffers)
Gerrit occupied the house of his grandfather "De Twee Paarden" (The Two Horses). (Van Zee, Engel, Family Genealogy, unpublished, ca. 1843, p. 4.)

Teunis/Tonis van Ballegooyen served as buurmeester of Herwijnen between 1696-8. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra) He was schepen at Herwijnen in 1704 through 1706. A-V-g ARIEN ARIENSE DE JONGH, prob bc 1634/37 of Herwijnen, s/o A-IV-n; as j.m. of Herwijnen, m there 16 Dec 1665 to JANNETJE THIJSSE VAN HERWAARDEN, j.d. of Asperen. Jannetje prob bc 1640 at Asperen, ZH, d/o A-IV-aj.
Probably the ARIEN ARIENSE DE JONGH to whom a loan was given by MARGARETHA BICKER between 1660-77. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 64.)
An interesting note in Van Rijckhuijsen's manuscript states that Adrien Adriaen de Jongh, the brother of "his [Cornelis Verploegh's] first wife [Marieken Ariens de Jongh], left Herwijnen because of his debts and left behind two girls. Willem Blom had one of them." (Van Rijckhuijsen MSS, Archive of Leijden, transcribed and translated by Engel Roza) This proves without a shadow of doubt that this Arien and Marieken were in fact brother and sister. Because Cornelis Verploegh is not found as a co-signer on the marriage contract between Geurt Aldertsz Rosa and Engeltken Ariens de Jongh it is strong evidence that Engeltken was not his sister-in-law, and so could not have been the sister of this Arien Ariensz. Further there can be no question as to which Arien Ariensz is being discussed in the above-sited note, as Willem Blom m Arien Ariens' daughter in 1689. The date of the note itself is not recorded but must have been written after 1675 as Cornelis Verploegh rem in that year. Gijsbert van Rijckhuijsen copied it down in 1741.
This is probably the Arien Ariensz de Jongh who is mentioned by Bijl as the burgemeester at Herwijnen in 1670. (ibid., Bijl) There is no such reference to an Arien Ariensz holding that post by Van Maanen. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)
Possibly the ADRIAAN DE JONGH who is mentioned in 1705 as the new 'owner' of the Drakenburg. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 81.) As Dr. Johan van Eck had been the owner of this property since 1678 and he subsequently passed it to his daughter in 1742. (Bijl, pp. 76 ; 81) it is supposed that de Jongh's interest in the property was more in the form of a lease.

Lord of Hellouw 6 May 1712. Collector of the "verpondingen" 1699, and commissioner of the artilleriepaarden (artillery horses) 1702-06. He was schepen at the High Court of Tuil from 1708-16, as well as serving as judge and on the polder board of Tuil from 1712 until his death. A-V-t GERRIT CORNELISSE VERPLOEGH, bc 1650/51, s/o A-IV-m; m LIJSBETH GERRITS VALCKEN, bc 1651 of Herwijnen,
d aft 1741, d/o A-IV-bj.Gijsbert van Rijckhuijsen, asked his father Arie, to interview Lysbert Valchen in 1741. Arie tells his son the results of this interview in a letter. At which time Lijsbeth was 90 years of age, with a mind as sharp as clockwork. She told that: her grandfather was Geurt Jansz and her father was Gerrit Geurtsz; that her father was twice m, (1) to a Van den Over and to (2) Maria Valcken. She said that her father was not really a Valcken, [the name came from her mother's side]. She was then asked whether she knew if Valken was a name which could be brought into correlation with the mother of Geurt Aeldertsz Roosa, the wife of Alert Gijsberts [Metken Walravens]. However, she could tell no more than a story about the marriage of three sisters, one m a man from Bommel, one a man from Hellouw, the other a man from Herwijnen. (Van Rijckhuijsen transcripts, translated by Engel Roza) Note: It is not totally clear why Lijsbeth mentioned this story of the three sister. It may be that Metken Walravens was one of these sisters. Metken's sister, Griet, did marry a man from the Bommelwaard, who was Lysbeth's grandfather (found at A-III-ab). Perhaps there was another sister who is yet to be discovered.
Gerrit is mentioned in his brother’s Will as "Heer" (Lord), a title indicating some social standing and/or respect. The christenings of their two daughters can be found at the Dutch Reformed Church
in Herwijnen; it was always assumed that the first Maria must have d young. However, this must be incorrect for she and her sister are both mentioned as m, together with their brother, Henricus, in the will of Gerrit's brother, WILLEM CORNELIS VERPLOEGH (A-V-u), dated 4 Dec 1717. (Van Baalen, D., "Verploegh", Gens Nostra, June 1960, pp. 153-165.)From this marriage:
Likely the Hendr. Verploegh of Rotterdam, as found in the polder records of 1746. At that time he held rights to three parcels. Of these, one he obtained from Willem Verploegh, another from his uncle (unnamed), both would be consistant with the will mentioned above. The 3rd right does not specify how he came to own it. By 1778 all three belonged to members of the Van Zandwijk family, heirs of his elder sister Maria (A-VI-o).
A-V-u WILLEM CORNELISSE VERPLOEGH, bp in Jan 1661, d bef 11 Apr 1741, age at most 80, s/o A-IV-m; m 17 Nov 1695 at Varik (age 34) (banns published there 26 Oct 1695) to (1) JESIJNTJEN VAN RIEMSDIJK, bc 1667, d 7 Jun 1719, d/o Hendrik Gerrits van Reimsdijk and Jenneke Draeck, and sister of Neelke Draak who married Willem Verploegh's brother.
Jasper Gerrtse and Cornelis Jacobs witnesses at Willem's baptism.
Willem and Jesijntjen wrote a joint will dated 4 Dec 1717 from which it is learned JENNEKE DRAAK is the heir of CORNELIS DRAAK and PETER DRAAK widower of Osch (Oss, GL) or perhaps was an heir with them through their mother; HENDRIK and CORNELIS LAMBERTSE DRAAK are also mentioned. Further the will mentions the children of just two of Willem's brothers and makes his nephew the guardian of his sole heir and only son. (Van Baalen, D., "Verploegh", Gens Nostra, June 1960, pp. 153-165.)
Note: Cornelis Draeck, Schout of Varik and Peter Draeck who resided in Oss, GL were brothers of Jenneke. There was another brother, Lambert Hendrik Draeck who was secretary of Varik and who d betw 1702-5. He was the father of Hendrik and Cornelis Lambertse mentioned in the above will.
Willem was schepen of Herwijnen in 1705 and probably the Willem Verploegh who was buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1711. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 86b.) Probably the Willem Verploegh who also served as buurmeester in 1700-2 and as waadsman in 1704-5. (Every year the dikes had to be checked to be sure they were still in good condition. It appears that Adrianus' task as maanmeester was to see to it that these checks and any repairs found necessary were made in a timely fashion). During the period 1694 he and one of his brothers promised surety for the delivery of 170 ammunition wagons. Adriaan was secretary of Herwijnen from 1711 until his death. In the past, village and townlet were self-supporting, recruiting artisans from their own people. In these small communities each occupation acts and re-acts on another, how unconnected they may appear. The depression of one throws the business of two or three others out of gear. The unexpected death of a wheelwright may delay the harvest of a farmer waiting for his wagons to be repaired, the closing of a forge adds to the expenses of others, because horses must me sent elsewhere to be shoed.
The carpenter had a number of occupations, which could effect almost all others. Often he was a builder, and the undertaker. He had his typical carpenter’s shop; its large bench standing in the middle of the floor littered with shavings, tools lining its walls. Here he made parts of the wagons, furniture for the farmers and villagers, door- and window frames and coffins. Often he was called for to do some repairs on houses or barns.
The larger the community, the more specialized the carpenter was. In the towns furniture was made by the cabinetmaker, the undertaker had a business of his own, but in these small communities a table or a chair
was ordered once in a few years. Allied with the carpenter’s profession were a number of occupations, he
could perform if business was low, but which were mostly done by the farmers themselves. The making of wooden hay-rakes is one example, or wooden pitchforks and handles for brushes. But normally the village
carpenter had enough on his hands. (E-mail 20 Dec 2001 via Dutch-Colonies@rootsweb.com, "Obsolete Occupations - Village Carpenter", from Cor Snabel

A-V-br AART JANS COCK, bc 1655 of Herwijnen, s/o A-IV-bf; m HENDRIKJE AERTS, bc 1659 of Herwijnen.
Aart's mother appears to have later married a Mr. de Bie. "Me vrouw de Bie heir of Jan Dirckz as sits their property 6' and Aert Janz Cocq 3' an heir of vrouw de Bie from Jan Aertz Cocq 3' undivided ... "(last word illeg). (Polder records of Herwijnen, LDS film 0875820) From these same records it is learned that Mrs. de Bie probably had other children with Jan Aarts: "Me vrouw de Bie's children of Jan Aertz Cocq" has property in Herwijnen which is undivided. At one time she was also married Huijbert Bijstervelt and had children. "Mevrouw de Bie's children of Huijbert Bijstervelt" are taxed or paying tithes on some undivided property at Herwijnen. This particular set of polder records is not dated but was probably from the 1680-89 time period. Using the first record mentioned above it is tempting to say that she was the daughter of Jan Dirckz, however in yet another polder record entry it is found she was also an heir of Willem Roock and with Peter Meertenz and Cornelis Aerts each had a third interest in yet another Herwijnen property.
From this marriage:
A-V-bs ARIEN ARIENS DE JONGH, prob bc 1637 of Herwijnen, possibly s/o A-IV-h; as j.m. of Herwijnen entered into a contract in 1664 to marry GRIETKEN DIRCXS [VAN BEEST] j.d. of Arkel. (Gorkum, Notary record, transcribed and translated by Engel Roza)
Given what is presently known of the various Arien de Jonghs, and thus by process of elimination, this Arien is presumed to be son on Arien Cornelisse de Jongh, though there is no evidence to proves so. As he was living at Arkel at the time he certainly cannot be the Arien Ariens de Jongh who served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1670 as had been suggested by Bijl. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen")
From this marriage (G.NA 4078, 5-6-1673, transcribed and translated by Engel Roza):

Nine years later he purchased the Frissestien in fief and with it became Lord of Herwijnen. Ten years after that he also had the Engelenburg. On 6 Oct 1666, Lijsken Joosten, widow of Lambert Aertsen, have her children Peter, Aert, Gijsbert and Joost Lamberts, bothers, for themselves and on behalf of daughter's husband Gijsbert Jans, and their sister Ariken, declare not to accept the estate. (ibid., Resandt, translated by Wil Keulemans)
As Cornelis Lamberts de Kock is not mentioned here he has been removed as a child of this couple.
From this marriage:
9 May 1661 Peter Lamberts, j.m living at Herwijnen, testifies; that at his death his property shall be inherited by his
brother Gijsbert Lamberts, provided that he [Gijsbert] will maintain his mother from it; and after her death the property shall be equally divided by his brothers. (ibid., Resandt, translated by Wil Keulemans)
Eelke appears to have d bef 1690 when her children (unnamed) are found in the earlier polder records of Herwijnen together holding property with their uncles Aert and Gijsbert Cocq and Geurt Verloop. (LDS film 0875820)
In the previous versions of "Herwijnen Residents" Eelken and Gijsbert Jans were found as parents at A-VI-ar with four children baptized at Herwijnen. However, thanks to the tenacity of Engel Roza, now it is certain that the placement of those children with this couple was erroneous. From the witnesses at two of those baptisms it is obvious that the children were closely related to the Ro(o)sa family. See A-V-a for further details. It appears from the polder record mentioned above that Eelken did have children, however, there are no records to indicate that they were born at Herwijnen. Perhaps Gijsbert returned to Waardenburg with his bride and had children born there.
Aert and Gijsbert Lambertz Cocq together with Jan Arienz Kleijn, Jan Eijmertz, Eelken Lamberts, and the children of Geurt Verloop held undivided polder rights in the 1680s. (LDS film #0875820)

A-V-cy ARIEN ARIENS DE JONGH, born 23 Sep1666 at Herwijnen, s/o A-IV-n. Likely the Arij de Jongh who mc 1694-95 to JENNEKE GERRITS.
At this time it cannot be stated positively that the ARIJ DE JONGH who married JENNEKE GERRITS was in fact s/o ARIEN ARIENS DE JONGH and JENNETJE THIJSSE HERWAARDEN as indicated above. He would have been about the right age, but there are too many unknowns to say for sure. Even though the birth records at Herwijnen begin in 1655 they seems to be very incomplete for a number of following years. Nevertheless, there can be little doubt that he would be a descendant of A(D)RIAEN MEERTENS or his brother CORNELIS.

In a genealogy study written circa 1843, by Engel van Zee (1775-1868) it states that Frederik's forefathers originated from England. It now appears that this is the case. Frederik's mother's maternal great grandfather,
DIRCK VAN BRUMMELLEN called himself an Englishman from Brumley. Like his father, Frederik was a master carpenter of Herwijnen.Town minutes dated 21 Jul 1732 mention that he was the owner of a plot of land known as 'de Seijerhoff', which was situated on the 'Sandsteeg' in Herwijnen.
On 5 May 1746 Frederick and his second wife, NEELTJE DOTTER, gave permission for the marriage of his eldest son.
Frederik served as schepen and waadsmannen of Herwijnen for many years: Schepen 1742-44, 1746-47, 1750-51, 1756,1762, 1764; waardsmannen 1744-45, 1748-50, 1754-56, 1758-60, 1762-64. He was buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1752-54. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 31-37, published by Gens Nostra) And schepen again in 1765. Gorinchem, ZH has been mentioned a number of times on this page already. It was on the river Waal just a little west of Herwijnen although in the next provience. Gorinchem was a fortified town in the middle ages, and as such played an important roll in the area. For a breif history of Gorinchem (in English) together with interesting maps and pictures go to:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~pho/History/history.htm. At the bottom of that page you will see a link "Go back to first page". Do it, the whole site is in English and very interesting.Likely the Cornelis Hendrick who was schepen with A. van Dalen in Herwijnen about the year 1795 (Bijl, Aert "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 86b)
A-VI-i CORNELIS WILLEMSE BLOM, bp 17 Oct 1717 at Herwijnen, s/o A-V-by; m there 23 Feb 1744 (age 26) to CORNELIA ADIANUSSE (Adriaanse) VERPLOEGH, (age 20), bp 18 Apr 1723, d/o A-V-v .

12 Mar 1743: Dirk van Hattem and Teuntje de Fockert, have transferred to the Lord Hendricus Verploegh, Lord of Hellouw, half of 3 1/2 mergen at Herwijnen's outer marches. (Tuil nr. 1263, fol. 8v,
http://home.quicknet.nl/mw/prive/j.lammers/regesten/prov2.htm)No doubt the Schepen Hendr. Verploegh as found in the polder records of 1746, holding rights to 35 lots. While his widow seems to have received two of these lots after her husband's death, his son, Heer Johan/Jan Verploegh, later holds rights to 4 of these same lots. However, it is his son-in-law, Capt. S. Schull, that ends up with most of Henricus' property interests. (Polder rcds, LDS film #087582)

According to a dossier found at the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie, Den Haag, the Zandwijk (Santwijk) family can be traced back to one FREDERICUS DE ZANDWIJK, a schepen in 1409. Dirk’s date of birth is given in the 2 page handwritten document, dated 1983, but no source was provided. The family likely originated in the village of Zandwijk near Tiel in the province of GL

Possibly the Govert van Balgooyen who was buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1740. (Bijl, Aart, "Over Heren, Weiden en Kastelen", p. 86b.)
Geurt and Mariken appear to have had a common law marriage prior to taking their vows, their 6 children are mentioned at the time, 3 others had previously d.
Govert van Balgoijen, husband of Maria van Zee, and Fredrick van Zee have transported to her/their son Hendrik van Hattem a letter of a loan passed for the schepen of Tuil dated 24 Jun 1745. From this marriage:
A-VI-v
It appears that there were two men by the name of GERRIT HENDRIKS VERPLOEGH who would have been contemporaries. One was married in 1704 the other in 1710. Gerrit m 5 Oct 1704 at Herwijnen to HEILTJE CORSTIAANS VAN ARENDONK, bc 1678 of Herwijnen, d/o A-V-av. The ancestry of this Gerrit is unclear, but was probably the son of Hendrik Cornelisse Verploegh, found at A-V-m-1. It was originally assumed that Heiltje d bef 2 Apr 1710 when a marriage was found between a Gerrit Hendriks and Magdalena de Gids. However, on closer examination it appears Gerrit and Heiltje continued to have children after 1710 . . .First, Gerrit and Heiltje already had a living son, by the name of Hendrik, when Gerrit and Magdalena named a son Hendrik; as pointed out elsewhere on this page it is known that this did occasionally happen, but still it is not the usual case. Second, Barber was the name of Heiltje's mother, it seems unlikely that Gerrit and Magdalena would choose this name for their daughter some five years after the death of a first wife. Thirdly there were two children baptized in 1712 one at the end of February the other the end of December, customarily there were more like 18 or more months between children.
("The other" Gerrit Hendriks Verploegh (who married in 1710) has been moved to A-VI-ar.)

From this marriage:
Resandt confirms that Johannes (Jan) was the product of this second marriage. Together with the fact that he named his first child Maijken (after his moher) seems also to confirm this.
Lambert could be the product of his father's third marriage, but there really isn't enough known to say for sure.

He is not mentioned in either the Lucassen or Resandt articles. The date of his marriage suggests that he may have been born by 1624 or earlier.

Until 1668 Hellouw was considered a part of Herwijnen from an ecclesiastical stand point sharing the same church. However, in that year there was some kind of break, although Hellouw was not officially recognized as having its own congregation until 1842. Even prior to the break many Hellouw inhabitants also used the church at Haaften for marriages and baptisms.
Pieter was the third in as many generations to be appointed schout (police commissioner/major) of Herwijnen, like his father, and grandfather before him. He appears in the records as such beginning in 1778 and there are records which seem indicate that he continued in this capacity through 1799, and that after this his son-in-law, Leendert van Zandwijk, was recorded as Schout. (LDS film #0875820) However, Aart Bijl in his history of the town states that Jan de Bruyn became the new schout in 1796 (at which time the French, under Napoleon, were in occupation of the Tielerward), saying further that Pieter had been in the office for thirty years as of April 1795.

Between 1754 and about 1758 Roeland moved his family to Lienden, GL where he was a school teacher; Gens Nostra, 1956, p. 300) and where his younger children were baptized. Lienden is about 26 miles east of Herwijnen and about 10 miles from the histroic city of Nijmegen.
The name van den Berg does not appear in the 1760 polder records of Herwijnen. Roeland appears to have inherited the rights to two polder lots between 1760-78. There rights had previously been held by his father-in-law, Govert van Ballgoijen, lot numbers 208 and 415.

An article appears in Gens Nostra, 1951 entitled "The Drimmelse Families de Bruyn", giving four generations of the family back to Jasper de Bruijn, perhaps born about 1620. Unfortunately the article falls short of placing Adrianus in the family of Huibert de Bruin. Actually it does credits Huibert and Jenneke with having three sons which they name Adrianus, however, it also gives a date of death for each, all it states d young.
It is known from his marriage record and the subsequent records of the births of his children that Adrianus de Bruin was in fact s/o Huibert de Bruin and Jenneke van Drimmelen as given above, so it is the conclusion of this compiler that the author of the Gens Nostra article must have made an error, either the 3rd child named Adianus did not die or yet another son with that name was born afterwards.
It would seem logical that de Bruin family of Drimmelen and the de Bruijn family of ZH - the family of Anneke’s mother - must have been related but the connection, if any, has not yet been made.

They resided in the house called De Nooteboom. Engel was poldermeester and later poldersecretaris of Herwijnen. Taxes were high when Engel found himself as tax assessor of Herwijnen. He was discharged from this position because he assessed the cattle to the advantage of the farmers. (De Bruijn, Enny, "Genealog in Herwijnen", Gens Nostra, January, 1998, p. 33)
He served as buurmeester of Herwijnen in 1800. (Van Maanen, R.H.C., "Bestuurders en dienaren binnen de heerlijkheid Herwijnen (1616) 1700-1800 (1809)", pp. 33-36, published by Gens Nostra)

Engel van ZeeEngel was considered well-to do, however, his serving nine children had to share their inheritance. For some of them it was hard to find a decent living in Herwijnen. Consquently his children Coenraad and Judith, together with their repective families, left with the separatist preacher Scholte for America on the Pieter Floris which sailed on 19 Apr 1847 from Amsterdam Baltimore and were among the original settlers of Pella, Iowa
. His son Govert and daughter Aaltje with her family followed in 1853. However, they met with much more bad luck. Aboard the steamer Aaltje lost her husband and one of her children [Adrianna] and her brother Govert had to be left behind somewhere on an island on account of a contagious disease. Aaltje went on to live with her remaining children at Pella. Engel lived several more years, still in the midst of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. From this marriage:
No doubt the Dirk de Kock, age 38, with wife, Adriana, age 45, who went to Pella, Iowa, USA in 1854. It appears his father (age 68/9) also went, but returned to Herwijnen where he d. Sons Peter, age 15, (probably the one who later m Engeltje Van Zee) and Leendert, age 11 where also mentioned.
A-IX-e ANTHONIE ARIES VAN ZEE, b 25 Jun 1787, bp 1 Jul 1787 at Herwijnen, d there 13 Apr 1870, age 82, s/o A-VIII-f; m there 13 Apr 1810 (age 22) to MAAIJKE (or Mayke) GOVERTS VAN ZANDWIJK, b 26 Dec 1789, bp the next day at Herwijnen, d there 10 Apr 1871, age 81, d/o A-VIII-b.
Anthonie and Maria were third cousins, each of their lines going back to Leendert and Maria (Boon) van Zee. They had an unusually large family of nine sons and four daughters. Of these five remained in Herwijnen, at least as long as their parents were alive. Six immigrated to America, four going to Pella in Marion County, Iowa and two to Hudson County, New Jersey.
A Govert with brother Dirk found in the 1870 at Pella, Marion County, IA. In 1880 he is probably the Govert age 67, widower, residing at a boarding at Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa.
As a young man Cornelis had to register for the military, as all young men did. He did not have to serve but his papers give a description of his physical features, according to this he had: a long face, small forehead, long nose, normal mouth, and round chin. His hair was red including his eyebrows and he had blue eyes. (LDS film # )
There are two books which list Dutch immegration to the US, in these Cornelis is listed as a farmer, age 35. One tells us he belonged to the Reformed Seceeders Church (Chirstian Reform) and that he traveled in the year 1850 with 1 woman and four children. The other gives more specific information: Cornelis, his wife Delia (33), and three children, Willem (7), Ant(onie) (5), and Geert (Govert) (1), together with a brother (unnamed, age 26, farmer) left Rotterdam for New York harbour on the ship Triskina on 25 May 1850. The unnamed 26 year old brother, no doubt was Dirk, born in 1824. Why the eldest child, Margaret, is not listed is unknown, but she was with the rest of the family in Bergen township, Hudson Co, New Jersey that summer when the 1850 census was taken; however, the youngest had d. The debarkation report says that Cornelis, a farmer, from a "less well to-do" economic class had come to America for "economic improvement" rather than for "religious reasons".
Probably as a stake for their trip Cornelis borrow four hundred gilders from his brother Dirk. This would have been comparable to perhaps a year's wages in 1850 Holland. In the margins of the note that specified the terms of the loan payments of one hundred gilders each were dated 3 January 1856 and 16 August 1856 and then a word meaning "satisfied", or paid in full.
In preperation for their trip official papers were obtained. Birth records for each member of the family was procured. In addition there was what we might call a Letter of Introduction which stated that that these people were of good conduct and character in all things they did and further said no complaint had ever been made against them. Their fifth child was born at Herwijnen in the fall of 1849. There was a birth record for him with the others.
Dielis Benthem is said to have removed 19 Apr 1847 to America aboard the Pieter Floris from Amsterdam, arriving in Baltimore, MD 11 Jun 1847. However, from the civil registration of his youngest children's birth at Herwijnen it is event that he did not, or must have returned shortly after and taken his family later.
A. B. van Zante is listed in the Souvenir History of Pella as arriving with his wife and five children in 1853.Soon after the birth and death of their first child Pieter and Adrianna departed for America on the ship The Southern in 1846. (Van Zee, Engel, Family Genealogy, unpublished ca. 1843.) He settled in Bergen, Hudson County, NJ. (Bergen has since been incorporated into Jersey City.)
Appears to be the 26 year old brother who traveled with Cornelis and his family, sailing 25 May 1850 from Rotterdam for New York harbour on the Triskina. The 1850 census finds him living next door to Cornelis in Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey with their brother Peter's family. In 1870 he is at Pella with wife Neelie and brother Govert. In 1880 he and Neelie were residing at Lake Prairie, Marion, IA. Between the two censuses we learn that he had six children all born in Iowa between 1856 and 1873.
Probably the Engel Van Zee, age 27 as "Arrives from Holland" in 1853 to Pella (Souvenir History of Pella, Iowa,
Pella, 1922, pp. 83-4). He apparently returned to Herwijnen for his bride then brought her to Pella where their six children were born between 1866-76. According to "De Volksvriend" a Dutch-language weekly newspaper, published in Orange City, Iowa, Thursday, 29 Mar 1883: "Tuesday there left here [i.e., Pella] for Plankington and Miller in Dakota nine or ten freight-car loads of household furniture, farm implements, etc. Included among the persons who this week set out on their journey to Dakota were Cornelia van Hees, and A. Noteboom, and Engel and Cornelis Van Zee with their families." Engel's family included his recent son-in-law Arie Van Zee. (Sluiter, Engel, Dr. "Van Zee Chronology", unpublished; compliments of Suzi Plooster)
It is said that most South Dakota Van Zees are descended from this branch.Engel, his son Frederik, and son-in-law Arie Van Zee, received various land patents in what was to become Douglas County, state of South Dakota. (
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/douglas/land/doug-tz.txt)Gerrit and Heelke had 9 children born at Herwijnen between 1860-73. It is suspected that he is the Gerrit who received a land patent in South Dakota in 1888. Among his children were a Johannes, eldest son; and a daughter Neeltje. These names also appear on the list of land patents in Douglas County, SD: (
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/douglas/land/doug-tz.txt)He and Willemina had fourteen children born at Herwijnen between 1859-79, four of whom d young.
After the death of his wife, Antonie immigrated to Pella, Iowa in 1889 together with some of his serviving children and their families. While reports of the family have, thus far, never mentioned any connection to South Dakota, there appears to have been one. An Antonie M. VanZee received a patent to homestead 160 acres on 18 Dec 1890. It may be his son, Govert. who is also found with two 160 acre patents, one on 30 Jun 1887, the other on 17 Jan 1890; if so, he apprears to arrived ahead of his father (ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/douglas/land/doug-tz.txt)

The Cornelis Van Zee mentioned above as going to the Dakota Territory in 1883 may have been the son of this Pieter. Cornelis, age 29, was living with his wife and children at Franklin, Marion, Iowa in 1880. Dr. Sluiter said that he did not where in Dakota Cornelis settled or what happened to him.
