Shadow Valley (1994)

I am traveling through

A valley of shadows

That are heavy of soul,

Weighty of spirit,

Shadows that are only partially seen,

But powerfully felt.

They press in from all sides,

Making it difficult to breathe,

Harder still to keep putting

One foot in front of the other.

Common sense says to stop and rest awhile,

Wait until the sun breaks through

And the shadows grow lighter.

But this is such an oppressive, uninviting place.

I am afraid to sojourn here,

Afraid those heavy shadows

And patterns of darkness

Will crush me within and without.

I need to know

Where to find shelter

And that I am not alone

During this internal night.
