Let's face it, attaining cool and being in a band that comprises piano, bass and drums could be a problem. But, then also to rise from the underground and sell over a million albums in America, packing out arenas en route, should prove an insurmountable task...however Ben Folds Five have achieved all this and more.

Ben Folds Five have now completed their third album "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner", which is ironic, heartfelt, melancholy, and unique and quite simply their greatest achievement so far.

"The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" is eleven new songs in total and sees the band move on from where the last album Whatever & Ever Amen left off. Preceded by a single "Army", the album is again produced by longtime co-hort Caleb Southern and mixed by Andy Wallace (Jeff Buckley, Nirvana).

Ben Folds Five are still Ben Folds, Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee. The album title is actually part of a story from Darren's schooldays when a friend suggested using Reinhold Messner on fake id's. Allegedly there were many 27 year old Reinholds who looked suspiciously adolescent, inhabiting the bars of Charlotte, North Carolina in the late eighties.

The real Reinhold Messner was actually the first man to scle Everest without the use of oxygen. Ben Folds Five pay homage to this great mountaineer with this album... "Maybe we liked the name because it had an exotic ring, or maybe we liked it because it was the energy behind a name responsible for some of the worlds incredible feats of mountaineering, and a global legion of inspired followers...thanks to Reinhold Messner for being a good hero and now a good sport".
