Unlike fusion -- which is jazz played with rock influences -- jazz-rock is essentially rock-based songs played with jazz flourishes and jazzy improvisations. When the two genres first developed in the late '60s, they were nearly identical; during the early '70s they began to branch away from each other, and jazz-rock became known as a slightly more commercial version of fusion.
