CHAPTER 4

SOLOS FOR THE CORNET

A-K

This list of solos is by no means everything that was written for the cornet in the nineteenth century, but does represent a large opus of material written for the instrument. Pieces here are selected because they represent characteristic pieces for the instrument, or were compositions written by, or dedicated to virtuosi of the cornet. An omission here is by no means a criticism of a composition’s worth. Early publication dates and names of publishers are listed whenever possible. Primary resources were Brass Roots (Newsome 1998), "Ernest Albert Couturier, Neglected Cornet Virtuoso: A Study in Musical Americana" (Galloway 1985), The Psychology of Cornet and Trumpet Playing (Noble 1964), The Heritage Encyclopedia of Band Music: Composers and Their Music (Rehrig 1991; Rehrig 1996), and "The Music for Solo Trumpet and Cornet with Orchestra from ca. 1870 to 1910 in the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music" (Pfoltner 1995). Another valuable resource for this section of the document was the 1999 Catalogue of Music for Brass (Wright & Round 1999). Music publishers since 1875, Wright & Round professes itself to be "The World’s Largest Music Publisher for Brass Bands." The forty-nine page catalogue offers solos, ensembles, tutors, and books for many brass instruments; brass band music, and an archive of over 1,030 compositions for brass band. It can be a valuable resource for any brass band, ensemble, student, or soloist.

Some of the lesser-used resources include the Complete Celebrated Method for the Cornet: World’s Edition (Arban 1982), C. G. Conn’s Truth (C. G. Conn 1902), Concertinos Nos 1-4 (Maury 1973), Historic Brass Society Journal (Tarr 1993), and Fantasie Brilliante (Forestier 1995).

In this chapter, the abbreviation (p) is for piano, (o) is for orchestra, and (b) is for band. F indicates any work that appears in the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Check with the library for circulation and the available format for any work, since availability is limited in some cases.
