The choir enjoyed a
successful first semester performing throughout the community,
developing their performance skills, and creating their first music
video. more...
The RMS Choir and Dance Team recorded a music video for the traditional Zambian song "Bonse Aba" on Friday, October 31st, in the RMS auditorium. The song was performed at the Oktoberfest Concert on October 23rd and at the FedEx Forum on Friday, December 12th, when the RMS Choir and Dance Team performed
on the court just before the Memphis Grizzlies played the Chicago Bulls
(and won!).
The choir recorded the audio track in the choir room, then created a CD of their recording on the computer. Next, the choir and dancers moved to the auditorium and performed along with the CD recording while the video was filmed. Finally, the audio track was mixed with the video tracks using video editing software.
The result can be seen above.

In October, the choir performed their first official concert of the year
- The Oktoberfest Concert and Hot Dog Supper. Ms. Mungle and her
students helped organize the event, preparing and serving food during
the event. Ms. Bell helped with the door prize tickets, and generous
foot donations were received from Ms. Greene, Ms. Patrick, Ms. George,
and Ms. Okeon. Students also entertained the crowd at the Memphis
Farmers Market in October. Several market-goers joined in during the
performance playing drums and percussion with us. Market organizers
invited us back to perform next season. Students ended their day at the
market with a trolley ride through downtown Memphis, observing some of
the cities landmarks including Tom Lee Park (and the story of Tom
Lee), the Arcade Restaurant (Memphis' oldest operating
restaurant), and the Pyramid. We talked with our trolley operator
about the history of the Memphis trolleys and admired the
architecture of the various buildings along South Main Street.
Choir members participated in the annual Downtown Holiday Parade
on November 28th, performing on their own float with members of the
Cordova Middle School Strolling Strings.
Photos from the parade can be viewed below.
The ensemble will also be in next year's parade and help design their
float.
Our field trip to the Center for Southern Folklore on December
3rd gave students the opportunity to learn more about American roots
styles such as Delta blues, electric blues, and soul through lectures,
photos, exhibits, and a live performance by local blues musician David
Bowen. Some of the students got up on stage with Mr. Bowen to sing and
dance. Photos and videos
from the trip can be viewed below.
Perhaps the most memorable experience of the first semester was our
December 12th performance at the FedEx Forum before the
Memphis Grizzlies game v. the Chicago Bulls. The choir, World Drum
Squad, and Dance Team performed together on the court for what will
hopefully be the first of many exciting collaborations.
Photos from the FedEx
performance can be viewed below.
The semester concluded with a moving performance of "Silent Night" at
the RMS Holiday Program on December 18th. Soloists Renee
Meredith, Mylyr Earnest, Bradnei Avery, Alexis
Hansbrough, Deion Jones, Jessery Thompson, Isiaih
Rankin, Ronzie Peeples, Montrelle Woodard, and
Marnequa Roberts did a wonderful job! The loud applause and cheers
made it clear that the audience thoroughly enjoyed the choir's
performance.
Our next performance will be in February, possibly at a venue downtown
(Ground Zero Blues Club? Center for Southern Folklore?). The date and
location will be given as soon as the details have been confirmed. More
performances opportunities are being planned and will be announced soon.
As always, thank you for your support!
