Genre: Indie Rock/ Pop

Year: 1989

Label: Elektra

Rating: 9.4

The Pixies are one of the most influential bands of the past fifteen years. You can hear it in the music of many artists. Kurt Cobain, for instance, specifically cited The Pixies's Gouge Away as the inspiration for Smells Like Teen Spirit. And on Doolittle, the record that brought them commercial success, this quartet from Boston are most certainly brilliant, and most certainly bizarre. Frank Black's (a.k.a. Black Francis)vocals shine here; he sounds like a madman on quite a few of the songs. Balancing out his maniacal meanderings is bassist/vocalist Kim Deals melodic, floating voice, which, suprisingly, blends very well with Black's. Joey Santiago is one of the interesting guitarists ever. It's staggering how much he can squeeze out of one note. The Pixies probably also take the cake for strangest lyrics. Debaser's lyrics were written about the Freanch Surrealistic film Un Chien Andalou. Overall, this record is completely insane, makes no sense whatsoever, and no one should be without it.
