BENNY BELL - Disc One Notes
There are several instances of Bell being credited as composer of one side of a disc and Samberg being credited on the other, even though both are the same man.
The Radio records were probably not released in numerical order. Obviously there are many large gaps in the numerical sequence. Numbers may well have been assigned at random. Some have copyright dates on the labels, and the number 92041 in the runoff area of #22 may also be a date.

01/02 Benny recalled this as being the first commercial release of any of his compositions.

04 Benny's best-known composition, at least until the 1975 "Shaving Cream" revival.

05/06 From the look of the pressing, this was mastered & pressed by ARC/Columbia, ca. 1936-7

11/12 Benny's involvement, if any, unknown

13/15 Looks like a 1939 ARC/Columbia mastering job

14/16 Apparently mastered from dubbings of alternate takes of the above. No credit to Frankie "Miggs" Rand on labels

Born March 2l, 1906, Benny Samberg broke into the music business as a song plugger in his late teens, in the 1920s. He only occasionally performed in nightclubs or theatres; that was never a major focus of his career. Realizing that there was a market for risqué recordings that wasn't being satisfied by the majors, he began releasing records on his own, first as Benny Bimbo and then as Benny Bell. Radio Records was a real do-it-yourself operation. Benny printed his own labels, and claimed to have even run the mastering lathe himself. (The runoff grooves, etc. are often crudely formed, and you can draw your own conclusions about the sound quality). After WWII he started the Bell label, still a DIY enterprise but with somewhat better technical quality. Bell records featured less risqué material and more family-oriented songs for the Jewish market, including some in Yiddish. "Pincus The Peddler," released on Bell in both English and Yiddish versions, was his all-time best-selling 78. Benny continued to make occasional risqué items released on other labels. The "Cocktail Party Songs" label primarily featured Benny's songs as sung by Paul Wynn (aka Phil Winston, aka Phil Weinstein) who had a somewhat similar but better-trained voice. There were also Cocktail Party Songs releases that were labelled "Paul Wynn" but actually sung by Benny himself. Benny also revived the Novelty label for at least one 1949 issue. There was a period of inactivity before Benny started Madison Records in the mid-Fifties (?) Madison released new material on LP and 45, along with reissues of Benny's earlier recordings.
In 1975 the Cocktail Party Songs record of Benny's song "Shaving Cream," sung by Winston, was re-released by Vanguard after it had become popular on the Dr. Demento Show and then on WNBC-AM. Benny at first claimed to have sung the vocal himself. Then Winston emerged, leading to some legal maneuvering which was described in several Billboard articles. The Vanguard single reached #30 on the Billboard charts, not bad for a 29-year-old recording. Vanguard released a "Shaving Cream" LP of tracks from Benny's vaults (most of the tracks are actually sung by Benny). Vanguard also released three followup singles. Taking advantage of his new notoriety, Benny revived the Madison label for awhile before settling back into retirement. His last appearance was on the Dr. Demento 20th anniversary TV special on Comedy Central in 1991.
Benny was affected by Alzheimer's disease in his later years. He died on July 6, l 999. According to his family, even when the most of his memory failed him, he never forgot the words to his songs.

BENNY BELL Disc #2 notes
All Bell Records labels show either ©1945 or ©1946. In a couple of cases I have two copies of the same recording with different dates. The 1945 and 1946 labels differ slightly in design, and the copyright date may refer to the label rather than the recording.
As with the Radio records on Disc One, these were apparently not numbered in chronological order. Note that two sequels to Benny's signature song "Pincus The Peddler" appear before the original. The numbers were evidently assigned at random or by some unknown system.
On all the Bell records reproduced here, the song title is inscribed (in English) in the runoff area of the shellac, along with the number, in Benny Bell's own neat hand printing (which I can identify from letters he sent me).
The two versions of "Hey Joe Two Beers"/"Pink Pills For Pale People" are different recordings. Otherwise, I have found no alternate takes of any Bell titles on 78. (Quite different from my experience with Radio records).
Benny told me that jukeboxes were a big market for his records, but #23 on this disc is the only one I've found that shows obvious signs of doing hard time in a Wurlitzer.

BENNY BELL Disc #3 notes
The Bell records (tracks 01-07) have English titles inscribed by Mr. Bell himself in the runoff area, like those on Disc #2.
The Cocktail Party Songs 78s all have the word "Cocktail" inscribed in similar fashion, but no titles.
#11 is of course available elsewhere with superior sound, but appears here in its original context with other songs recorded on the same occasion.
Compare #15 to Disc One, #26.
#16 is from Dr. Demento's 25th Anniversary Collection, sound restored by Bob Fisher for Rhino Records. The 78 (the only copy I've ever seen) belongs to comedy writer Ira Miller.
#16 and #20 are heard here without the electric bass which was overdubbed for Vanguard's reissue of these tracks. (It did not improve the music in my opinion).
Track #17 transferred from a reel-to-reel dub of the 78. It's a bit lacking in high end.
#27 from a tape made by Brian Korn. The label just has the Vanguard name, not their usual logo. The reverse side of the 45 is "He Done Her Wrong," which is identical to #23 on this CD.

RUBE BLOOM notes

The Rube Bloom piano solos are in chronological order by
recording date. Earlier versions of "Soliloquy" and "Spring
Fever" were cut in 1926.
The tracks following the Bloom solos might be more
felicitously sequenced 24-25-21-22-23.
On the Iragen record (from Gennett masters) the info for
both sides (including the misspelled Biederbecke) is on the
side that plays "Holiday." The side that plays "In A Mist"
has a label with a wordless black-and-white modernistic design
including a strobe pattern keyed to 78 rpm.

RAY BOURBON NOTES
I have no definite dates for any of these, and they are probably not in precise chronological order.
Judging by the look of the pressing, 01/02 were recorded by Decca ca. 1937.
05-07 are probably a bit earlier than that. (Good Humor reissued many HHS titles in the late 1930s and 1940s, sans artist credits.) There is obviously some relation between those and 24-25. Bourbana WR711 is a 12" disc (the label named in honor of Fiskana, we presume). The labels read "Western Record Co." and "Recorded In Hollywood."
This Imperial label does not appear to have any connection with the well-known postwar label by that name. All these Imperial labels read "Recorded In Hollywood." All save the first two couplings also read "Anyone found using this number without permission will be prosecuted."
The Bourbon Records three-disc set including "Mr. Wong" will be toasted soon on another CD.

BRUZ FLETCHER SINGS Notes
Stoughton J. Fletcher appeared at the Casino Town Club (NY) in 1934 and the Club Bali in Los Angeles in 1936, '39 and 1940. Due to frequent police crackdowns on gay performers, he had difficulty finding work. He grew increasingly despondent and committed suicide on Feb. 8, 1941 in Tarzana, CA. -The Blue Pages
Bruz Fletcher began his career at the Hill School, in Pottstown, Pa., where he improvized his own jazz melodies for the delectation of his classmates. Shortly after his graduation, his father ceased being president of the Fletcher American National Bank of Indianapolis, and so, without benefit of the family yachts and horses, he commenced his professional career as an entertainer in earnest at the Gables Beach Club in California, where he sang his first original lyrics for the exalted sum of ten dollars. His reputation as a creator of ingeniously sly ditties grew very rapidly, however, and he is today one of the most select of that highly select group, the "special material" writers. Unlike many of his confreres, though, Bruz Fletcher supplements his writing with personal presentations, and of his performances it is sufficient to state that a two-week engagement at the Club Bali in Hollywood begun on July fourth, 1935, was concluded the first of October, 1940. His unique style of song delivery and his appearance combine to qualify him for charter membership in what he is wont to term "The Tired Baby Face Club." The author of four books which (he is glad to say) are out of print, also two plays which perished in the pasture but may rise and live again, he has written material for many of the most illustrious names in the theatrical and cinema world. His work has a peculiarly mordant quality which makes it penetrating social satire as well as hilarious good fun and establishes him as a completely distinctive figure in the field of night club entertainment. His highly successful recordings have been instrumental in spreading his fame throughout the length and breadth of the land; and of all his efforts on discs, those contained in this album are in many rsepects the finest. But any attempt to describe or evaluate these amazing creations of Bruz must necessarily be a bit futile, so gather 'round the phonograph, fill up the glasses and let Bruz speak for himself. -Liner notes for LMS album set containing tracks 17-22 on this disc
This CD contains all the Fletcher recordings listed in "The Blue Pages" except for two, "The Garden City Belle" & "The Human Newsreel" (LMS L-180). It also contains three items not mentioned there -- #11, #15, #16.
Track 19 is a remake or alternate take of track 10. Track 20 is a remake or alternate take of track 9. Track 21 is a re-titled remake or alternate take of track 12.
The label of #12 is autographed "To Mr. & Mrs. Spencer with great good wishes, Bruz - "Bali," 1938.

ANDY IONA Notes

OKeh 3762 is a reissue of Co 3094D, same takes. The OKeh was actually used for this CD.
My copy of #17 has the same label as #18 (pressing plant error). The title of #17 is guesstimated with reference to Roger Kinkle's encyclopedia.
The Columbia four-disc album I mentioned has two discs featuring Iona. One couples #09 with "Ta-hu-wa-hu-wa-i" from Co 2962D. (The album copy was actually used for this CD for #09; it's from the original parts). Another disc features Iona backing up the vocalist Miulan. This was included on the CD as #21 and #22. The remaining two discs are by Sol Hoopii and Lani McIntire (one each).
Iona did have a Columbia four-disc album to himself - "Aloha Hawaii", 35843 thru 35846. Unfortunately, I could only locate the one disc included here.
The two Deccas I have by Iona will be included on another CD.

WILLARD ROBISON Notes

The orchestral recordings come first, roughly in chronological order, followed by the vocals. The third disc is filled out with WR songs by other artists.
I transferred every 78 by Willard Robison that I could locate in my stacks, regardless of the condition.
"Darby Hicks" (disc one-#1) and "Deep River Blues" (disc two-#8) are coupled on an un-numbered Perfect disc labeled "Demonstration Record - Price 15c." Mike Kieffer has an E+ copy of this issue.
On Disc One #8, and perhaps others, one "channel" yields noticeably better sound than the other.
Disc One, #4, #16 and #18 each have a few seconds of very rough groove partway through, as if something fell on the soundbox or someone pushed down hard on it (a child?) As I recall, these all came from the same thrift shop pile years ago.
Disc Two #1 - This session may have been directed by Willard Robison, according to Brian Rust's dance band discography.
Disc Two #2 - I have a second copy of this record which has an alternate take on this side only. However, I couldn't discern any notable differences between the two renditions of this waltz, so I only transferred the cleaner copy for now.
Disc Two #8 - I have the same take on Pa 32201B, in lesser condition.
Disc Two #9-10 - This record has two radial cracks :( --- It is somewhat more listenable in mono.
Disc Two #20-21 - This record has a "tight hair crack" that ticks a little especially during the latter part of #20. It virtually disappears when played in mono.
Disc Three, #9-10 - Addenda: The artist credit on these two sides is: WILLARD ROBISON Acc. by his Little Symphony
Disc Three, #11-18 Liner notes: "This is easy listening music. I have wanted to make these Willard Robison songs ever since I formed my own band. Willard, in his music, has created picture stories of places and events in the deep south. I compare them to a sort of mental movie, and if you sit back and listen, his vivid lyrics and mood setting melodies form little stories that create four star productions in your own mind. At least that's the way they have always struck me, and I have gotten a big bang out of these imaginary excursions. We have tried to give these songs the flavor that Willard had as his objective when writing the music. He has performed them for me many times, and his easy delivery was my inspiration for these performances. "Cottonwood Corners" and "Moonlight Mississippi" are towns that we have all seen but never been to. They represent the heart of rural America. "Peaceful Valley" is the setting that even Hollywood couldn't do justice to. We all know "Old Folks" and "Old Pigeon-Toed Joad", and Willard certainly makes you feel the pinch of those "Sharecroppin' Blues." We have saved "Poor Loulie Jean" for the album finale, and made it in two parts because I don't think that anyone could possibly edit this plaintive story. I personally think that Willard Robison is a contemporary Stephen Foster. His music is pure Americana--in a peaceful sort of way. I sincerely hope that you get as much of a kick out of these songs as I had making them. They're personal favorites--especially when we are now trying to settle down and have a little peace. -Tony Pastor
The liner also has a woodcut illustrating each song. Unfortunately the records are miserable mid-Forties recycled-shellac pressings (wonder if any real Willard Robison records were among the ones ground up to make them?) They are transferred in the order in which they're listed on the cover.
Disc Three,#19-20: An oddball issue, a 7" 33 RPM LP with labels similar to late-Fifties ABC-Paramount 78's, in a printed paper sleeve.
