Constituted
15 July 1940 in the Regular Army as 2d Battalion 39th Engineers (General
Service) and redesignated 13 January 1941 as 2d Battalion 39th Engineers
(Combat). Activated 25 April 1942 at Camp Bowie, Texas. Redesignated
1 August 1942 as 2d Battalion 39th Engineer Combat Regiment. (Departed
New York Port of Embarkation 13 January 1943 for overseas service and arrived
at Oran, North Africa on 27 January 1943. Moved to Sicily on 13 July
1943 and landed in Italy on 18 October 1943). Reorganized at Monghidoro,
Italy and redesignated 1 March 1945 as the 643d Engineer Combat Battalion.
(Returned from overseas service and arrived at Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation
on 24 August 1945) Inactivaated 15 November 1946 at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Redesignated 29 April 1947 as the 39th Engineer Combat Battalion.
Redesignated 23 November 1954 as the 39th Engineer Battalion (Combat).
Activated 17 January 1955 at Fort Riley, Kansas; inactivated 25 September
1956 at Fort Riley. Activated 17 June 1962 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
(Arrived in Vietnam 2 January 1966 and initially located at Cam Ranh Bay.
Later stationed at Tuy Hoa, Duc Pho, Chu Lai and Da Nang. Departed
Vietnam for return to the United States on 18 April 1972). Inactivated
15 September 1992 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
