Square dancing  the in 1988-9 in Dover DE began as a single with a Plus couples club using the local Grange Hall. Best was a homemade ice cream night (I wanted seconds on the bananna flavor but none remained). Barb was an enjoyable partner but the relationship did not blossom. We even took ballroom lessons together.  Through other social contacts Old English dancing (the tux or costume type) also began in Dover. In 1989-93, square dance continued in Atchison and Leavenworth. Also in 1990-2 eventually with Jan (in her new black dance dress she announced, "I feel eighteen again!") in Topeka KS. Best was a heavenly night of calls to Elvis songs! Then in Kansas City in 1993 (met Lois the Unity minister) and 1997 (Fern the widow), several singles' clubs and a small church group. Each new setting usually began with lessons, akin to life-long learning. I still have my handbooks and self made cutouts which helped figure out the flow of the more complicated movements.

The life-long learning schema included ballroom dance lessons with the master of community dance lessons in Atchison and Leavenworth KS, Bob Staley. I availed myself of each new session from 1989-91 resulting in an unsuccessful corina match which was well worth the trial including a Summer 1991 trip to southern Germany and the coast of Spain south of Barcalona. In the United States, most weekend nights of 1991-2 we would trip the light fantastic, closing the local Western dance hall, then we would drive over to Missouri and close an Embassy Suites night spot, talking at the four story waterfall for a time before going to breakfast. Many a drive home was accompanied by the sunrise. Unfortunately the sun set on that relationship. Then from 1992-3 the scene shifted to the big city with those big-time fast-pace facades working the singles marketplace, especially the church dances. Also tried an unimpressive swing dance club in 1993 - perhaps not enough freedom in the slot designed for the postage stamp dance floor. However, the church sponsored dance lessons were enriching from 1994-5. (In summary know what you're "buying", and by all means, "Buyer beware!")

I enjoy dancing very much and perhaps will return at a slow-pace in 2000......
