Is Reiki for you?

Rei - Spiritual Wisdom

Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West in 1938, said the word Rei means universal however, Mrs. Takata also indicated that this interpretation is a very general one. The kanji ideograms have many levels of meaning. So while it is true that Rei can be interpreted as universal, meaning that it is present everywhere, this level of interpretation really doesn't add to our understanding of Reiki.

The esoteric meaning of the Japanese kanji character for Rei has given a much deeper understanding of the ideogram. The word Rei as it is used in Reiki is more accurately interpreted to mean supernatural knowledge or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from God or Higher Self. This is the God-Consciousness which is all knowing. It understands each person completely and knows the cause of all problems, all difficulties and knows what to do to heal them.

Ki - The Life Force

Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. It has also been called, odic force, orgone and bioplasma. It has been given many other names by the various cultures that have been and are aware of it.

Ki is life force. It is also called the vital life force and the universal life force. This is the nonphysical energy that animates every living thing. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and when it dies, the life force departs. If your life force or energy is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When the energy is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life force plays a very important role in everything we do. It animates the body and is the primary energy of our emotions, our thoughts and our spiritual life. The Chinese place great importance on the life force or what they call Chi. They have studied it for thousands of years and have discovered there are many different kinds of Chi. Thirty-two different kinds of Chi or Ki are listed in the "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" which is over 4,000 years old.

Martial artists use Ki in their physical training and mental development. Ki is the nonphysical energy used by all healers. It is used in meditative breathing exercises called Pranayama, and by the shamans of all cultures for divination, psychic awareness, manifestation and healing. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.

Reiki is Spiritually Guided Life Energy

It is the God-consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the healing practice we call Reiki. A meaningful interpretation of Reiki is "a spiritually guided life force energy". It more closely describes the experience most people have with it; Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom.

Is Reiki A Religion?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. There is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God or Higher Power if you prefer, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their own religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

About Dr. Mikao Usui

In the late 1800's, Dr. Mikao Usui, Dean and Minister of a Christian school in Japan, began a 28 year quest to bring us what we know today as Reiki. It all began with one student asking Dr. Usui if he believed that Jesus actually healed. Dr. Usui replied yes, and the student requested a demonstration. Dr. Usui, having taught his students to heal the soul, understood his students desire to also understand how to heal the body, as the Bible told them that such healing was possible. Dr. Usui was compelled to help his students find the answers to their questions, and there was a stirring beginning inside of him to heal.

Dr. Usui's first path led him to America to study different religions and philosophies at the University of Chicago for seven (7) years, after which time he returned to Japan to visit Buddhist temples and speak with the Monks. The Monks said they didn't know how to heal; however, Dr. Usui met with the Abbott who said at one time, they did know the art of healing the body, but it was lost because they had been concentrating on the spirit only. The Abbott invited Dr. Usui to stay at the monastery and study the sutras (the writings of Buddha) if he felt intuitively guided to do so, as anyone seeking knowledge were accepted in their quest.

Dr. Usui read everything there was to read in Japanese, but found no answer. Many of the sutras had been translated from Chinese into Japanese, thus Dr. Usui was intuitively guided to learn Chinese so that he could learn more. Dr. Usui studied for years and still found no answers. The Buddha's original teachings were in Sanskrit. A Tibetan priest had translated the Sanskrit teachings into Tibetan. Upon meditating over what to do next, Dr. Usui then learned the Tibetan language so that he could study the Sanskrit Sutras. It was at this time he believed he discovered the keys to healing.

Dr. Usui returned to the monastery where the Abbott told him that he must meditate, and if it were his destiny, the final answers would be revealed to him. Dr. Usui walked 17 miles to Kuramayama to fast and meditate. At his chosen spot on the mountain, Dr. Usui gathered 21 small stones to count his days of fasting and meditation. Every morning, he would face east and meditate, and throw one stone off the mountain. On the night of the 20th day, Dr. Usui felt as if he were near death, and knew that if the answer did not come on the following day, that he would have to leave the mountain without attaining the knowledge he sought.

The story says that on the 21st day, Dr. Usui rose and faced east. Before throwing the last of 21 stones, he asked "The Source" to show him how to use the information he had found. As he threw the last stone, a brilliant light appeared. At first, Dr. Usui was frightened and wanted to flee, but he was willing to risk death to have these secrets revealed to him.

The light swirled and rushed at Dr. Usui, hitting him directly in his third eye (the Chakra center in the center of the forehead), and he began to see a beautiful rainbow of colors, including bubbles of gold, blue and violet... each having a symbol inside. Thus, Dr. Usui was "attuned" to each symbol and had complete understanding of the healing power of each one. He said "I remember... I will not forget them, and I will not allow them to be lost." Dr. Usui hurried down the mountain to tell the Abbott all that had happened.

On his way down the mountain, he tripped and stubbed his toe. Bending down, he held his toe between his hands, and the pain and bleeding stopped immediately. Dr. Usui felt a heat and energy coming from his hands. This was the first miracle. At the bottom of the mountain, he felt hungry and stopped at a home, asking for rice and tea. The girl who served him had a bandaged jaw, and Dr. Usui asked permission and placed his hands on her aching tooth. The pain and swelling disappeared, thus the second miracle. The girl's father was unable to pay for the healing and asked that he be able to exchange the food for the healing (thus an equal exchange of energy had taken place).

After Dr. Usui returned to the monastery, he was instructed to meditate to seek his next course of action, at which time, he was guided to go and heal the poor... which he did for the next seven years from daylight to dark. Towards the end of this time, Dr. Usui saw a beggar whom he had once healed. The beggar told Dr. Usui that he had returned to begging because he did not want the responsibility that his new life had brought to him. Dr. Usui was saddened and confused, and returned to the monastery.

The monks told him that he had done exactly the opposite that they had been doing. He was healing only the body and not the spirit. Dr. Usui understood: not only must the body be healed, but also the spirit, and that the one being healed must have some responsibility in the process. Dr. Usui had taken away that responsibility by "giving away" the healing; therefore, an equal exchange of energy must take place between the healer and the one being healed, and it is the healee’s responsibility to accept the healing energy. These lessons completed Dr. Usui's own enlightenment.

Dr. Usui trained sixteen teachers, one being Chujiro Hayashi. When Dr. Usui died in 1930, Dr. Hayashi became his successor. Dr. Hayashi divided the Reiki teachings into three degrees (I believe it is an important point here that Dr. Usui was not the one to do this). Dr. Hayashi had a vision of the second World War's arrival, and trained two women just in case all the men were called to the war.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata was a widow with two children. She became very ill with nervous exhaustion, many physical problems, gall bladder disease, a respiratory condition, and her health was deteriorating. She was told that she had to have surgery, but that the surgery might also kill her. While waiting for the surgery, she was diagnosed with appendicitis, gall stones, and a tumor. The night before the surgery, she heard a voice saying "The operation is unnecessary." She asked the next morning if there was anything else that could be done for her, and she was told of Dr. Hayashi's Reiki clinic.

Mrs. Takata was allowed to stay at the clinic and was completely healed... mind, body and spirit... in four months time. She wanted to learn Reiki, but was refused because she was a foreigner. Hayashi did not want Reiki to leave Japan; however, Mrs. Takata's original surgeon intervened on her behalf, and she was trained in 1936. In 1937, she returned to Hawaii, bringing Reiki with her.

Dr. Mikao Usui recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony. These ideals are considered to be universal across all cultures.

The Reiki Ideals - The Ethical Principles of Reiki

During meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The Ideals are guidelines for living a gracious life:

• Just for today, do not anger

• Just for today, do not worry

• Just for today, honor yourself, your parents, your children, your teachers and elders

• Just for today, live life gratefully

• Just for today, devote yourself to your work and earn your living honestly

Each of us has focal points of energy within our bodies. These energy points are called chakras and everyone has them and uses them, whether it be consciously or unconsciously. Human beings have patterns of energy that flow within us and around us, our chakras are the focal points for the energy to flow.

"Chakras", which means "wheels" in Sanskrit, are points of energy running along our spine. Ancient Hindus determined that there were seven chakras (energy wheels) each a different color and spinning in a clockwise direction. The spacing of chakras matches major nerve or endocrine centers in the body.

The chakras can become blocked and when this happens we feel out of balance or ill. One method of clearing the chakras is to visualize cleansing light pouring into them. Sometimes though, we need professionals to help with this cleansing, especially if the blockage has been there for a long period of time. The longer the blockage has been there, the more physical ailments will occur, sometimes very slowly and unnoticed until we finally need medical attention.

Each chakra is associated with an important part of your body, it has a colour associated to it and it carries its own unique function, which has a direct effect on our daily lives. No chakra is better or worse than another and by understanding each chakra, we can make the best use possible of the power they hold.

We start first with the Root Chakra (red), located directly at the base of the spine. How our bodies connect to the material world and our focus on security and survival are all linked to the Root Chakra.

The 2nd chakra is the Hara Chakra (orange), located at the sex organs. This chakra hosts a person's creativity and imagination and when functioning at full capacity, it can help a person to feel more energized.

The 3rd chakra is the Naval Chakra (yellow), located in the lower abdomen. This chakra is a focus point for our initiative and our feelings of pleasure, like sexuality and passion.

The 4th chakra is the Heart Chakra (green), located at the center of the chest. This chakra hosts many of our strong emotional feelings, such as love, compassion and forgiveness.

The 5th chakra is the Throat Chakra (blue), located in the throat area. This chakra focuses on the power of our communication, based on truthful and thoughtful speech.

The 6th chakra is the Brow Chakra (indigo), also known as the '3rd eye point', located in the center of the forehead just above the eyebrows. As you focus more on this chakra, your intuition, insight and imagination become more powerful. This chakra focuses on things beyond the physical realm.

The 7th chakra is the Crown Chakra (violet), located at the very top of your head. This chakra is directly associated with your mind, spirit and inner consciousness.

There is also what is known as your aura (white), an energy field which surrounds your entire being. Your aura acts as your protective shield and changes in colour and size based on your physical condition and emotional levels.

There is much more in-depth information that can be learned about the chakras but the above explanation gives you a good introductory description and understanding of what they are all about.

Quotations

"Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

You may ask anything in my name, and I will do it." --John 14:11-14

"This year, as you continue to decide what matters most, be honest with yourself. Stop ignoring the urge to get on with the work you know you should do or to finally redefine a relationship: The whisper you keep hearing is the universe trying to get your attention. Make it your intention to pursue only what is honorable, what is good, and what is true--and the result will be a life grander than you could ever have imagined. When you're true to who you are and what your spirit is telling you to do, that truth will indeed set you free." - Oprah Winfrey

"You may go through many experiences over and over, with the same types of people, with the same attitudes and beliefs, unaware that to break the cycle is to put attention on your spiritual resources. The full measure of your effectiveness, love and endurance through challenge and struggle is found through awakening your spirit. Your spirit is manifested love. It holds your intention for meaningful service, your capacity to overcome adversity, and your ability to see beauty, compassion, and joy where there may seem to be none. You become a creator, a divine initiator, when you know your own awakened spirit." - Meredith L. Young-Sowers
