George and Margaret arrived in Melbourne in 1854 aboard the "Lincluden Castle" and immediately made their way to the West Wimmera where George took up his position as manager of the newly established station "Newlands" midway between Apsley and Edenhope. This station still stands today. Their son Alexander is said to be the first white child bathed in Lake Wallace in Edenhope. In 1876, George brought his widowed brother Thomas to Australia with his five daughters. Thomas was died of consumption in 1877 and George and Margaret took responsibility for the girls - the eldest of whom, Marion, married their only son Alexander in 1888. |
