Now, TRL isn't a perfect show we all know this..but sometimes they really mess up and cover up things
that are pretty bad. Then again there are just some things they didn't want you to know, and here you
can read up on all the conspiracies TRL has done over the years.

TOTALS!  Flashback - October 1998
Any of you remember way back when the staff used to yell out "TOTALS!" when Carson said "Alright let's take a look at the e-mail and phone votes for video number 2.." or somethin like that - it will always be a classic moment, at times some staff would get on the in-studio loud speaker and yell "Totals", this scared Carson one time he even said "Ah. sh*t that's loud totals.." It's pretty crazy to think that was about 3-4 years ago, my what TRL has become today; a barrage of screaming fans.

Commercial Cam
Ever wonder what the fans do during the 3, 4 minute commercial break? Well this season (summer in the keys) TRL gave us a look, apparently they throw on some music in the studio and the fans basically go nuts and dance and cheer, etc. Carson leaves the studio area into the Green Room and just chills there reviewing cue cards or chattin with staff until he has to go back on live

Say What? Request - 07.30.01
Requests, we've seen them all the time, the little box or (mortis) that pops up on the screen during a video, you say your name, where you're from, why you liked the vid, then woo or whatever. Well, this has happened before when a guy said some stuff about boy bands with their "fruity" music and korn about how they "fuc*in rock", evidently again on this episode, a crazy fan swore and pretty much make a public service announcement to the world "..I do whatever I want, I smoke w**d, and I don't give a f**k"..the request was quickly and abruptly cut off, if you were fortunate to see trl live on the east coast you surely heard this, if on the west coast..you got the censored version. Hmm I bet that fan was booted from MTV forever..

Remixed Videos On TRL - 05.21.01
This observation is incorrect, after clearly seeing the differences between remixed song and remixed video, Britney Spears' "Crazy (The Stop Remix)" was already an original video, no previous first version was ever released with the original song. Therefore, TRL stands correct with 6 remixed videos (not 7) on the countdown in it's history. However, this may still be debatable..if remixed song is what we're looking at here then definitely the count is 7, otherwise for video, it's as stated on TRL.

In spite of the World Premiere of Limp Bizkit's "My Way" Remix, TRL had a little trivia before the next airing segment whose question was "How many remixed video have been on the TRL countdown?" Now their answer of remixed videos is 6: Destiny's Child "Survivor", Backstreet Boys "The Call" (Neptune's Remix), Sisqo Feat. Foxy Brown "Thong Song" (Uncensored Remix), Korn "Make Me Bad" (Sickness In Salvation Remix), Mariah Carey Feat. Da Brat "Heartbreaker" (Remix) and Jennifer Lopez "Waiting For Tonight" (Hex Hector Remix). -- Okay well, they're kinda wrong here..there have been 7 not 6 remixed videos (songs) on the countdown. If you're counting this list according to actual video remix then this is debatable, however this is still not the original song: Britney Spears "(You Drive Me) Crazy" The Stop Remix is a completely re-worked song. Britney's debut album contains the original version which isn't that great, but if they hadn't made a remix this video would've never stayed on the countdown. So technically in the literal sense, there are 7 remixed videos on the list, keep in mind the video and song were still a remix (during the first 30 or so days of it's 65 day run they even had the title "The Stop Remix" in the video's chryon crawl.

Tom Green's "The Bum Bum Song"
If you one of the very fortunate to see Tom's video you know that it was a good one and did infact reach #1 on 08.27.99. The weird part is that it did get retired after only one week on the countdown because this wasn't as Tom said "..fair to 98 degrees and all the real bands.." We all thought Tom retired it personally, but the secret is that the producers of TRL saw this video as a "novelty video" (or self promotion through Tom for the network) it wasn't getting any actual national air time on TV or radio, so they had to get rid of it. I think that if Tom's video had not been "retired" it most likely would have hit 65 days without a problem.

*NSYNC "Bye Bye Bye" - Retired @ #4 ??
Bye Bye Bye..it spent a total of 54 days in the number one position and had a 26 day streak, virtually nothing could stop this video. People were familiar with it being at number one, and all the fans we're sure that it would be retired at the top, but then comes Wanna Be A VJ-3 Week, a week where TRL hit the road during VJ auditions and had the applicants vote for the day's countdown. Very surprisingly and disappointingly, *NSYNC was retired at #4 - the worst showing of that video ever (it never left the top 2 during it's 65 day run). If TRL stayed in Times Square that week, it would've retired at number 2 or 1 for sure (see how taking TRL out on the road affects the countdown..)

TRL Retirement Home
(A big thank you to Sarah for letting me use this info, for statistic proof, visit her site.)
Obviously someone at TRL can't count..the following vids were either sent off on the wrong day, or never granted their 61 day announcement.
Juvenile "Back That Thing Up"
Mandy Moore "Candy"
Britney Spears "Oops..I Did It Again"
*NSYNC "It's Gonna Be Me"
Eminem "The Real Slim Shady"
Sisqo "Thong Song"
Christina Aguilera "What A Girl Wants"
Backstreet Boys "The One"
Orgy "Blue Monday"
Kid Rock "Bawitdaba"
Limp Bizkit "N 2 Gether Now"
Limp Bizkit "Faith"

Old Skool vs. New Skool
Perhaps the worst idea in TRL history, old skool videos vs. new skool videos screw up the entire show in the statistic sense as well as keeping the countdown in normal function. Example; let's say Limp Bizkit was 3 days from retirement, if a new vs. old battle occurred and they lost, then that video would be retired one day later..ruining the consecutive 65 day run. Now this doesn't seem so disturbing or contradictory, but
statistically it should have been retired a day earlier. This also goes with the total run days of a video..if a new video lost over an old skool video the total number of days on TRL would be one lesser, the significance of this: three votes from the audience in the studio or times square does not make up for thousands of official votes for a video made online and by phone. TRL needs to stop this 'fun' event because it isn't fun at all..a lot of fans are disappointed by this because they vote and vote waiting to see their video and suddenly it gets booted by another..it pretty much defeats the idea of the R in TRL.

TRL Not Live In The Summer
One very good explanation for why many of the retirement home videos overplayed is that during the summer season TRL usually switches it up back and forth between the summer headquarters and the MTV Studios. With them toggling the show, the statistics are off because they do not shoot TRL live from the summer location, this is evident with SoCal Summer out in California and Summer In The Keys in Florida; in Cali, the only possible way to broadcast live to New York is airing the show at 12 noon (which is 3 PM on the East Coast.) It is a known fact that everyday at noon in San Diego no shows were being taped whatsoever - in Florida, TRL even taped more than one show a day..I have no clue as to how they got the countdown results for the entire week on Monday..perhaps they gathered local votes each hour, who knows but it's pretty clear that MTV didn't like this summer location, towards August they never returned TRL to the Keys (only for the End of Summer Countdown, which was pre-taped as well). So TRL was definitely not live in either of these locats, which explains the incorrect track of video stats and dullness of the show when it's out of the Times Square vibe..

Fan Appreciation Week - The "Personalized Top 10's"
(Thanks again to Sarah for helping me clarify this.)
Were the personalized top 10's really personalized? Kinda..each paper Carson or Brian pulled out of the bin had the exact same top ten with the names. (Notice how they never let a guest or fan read aloud the video on the piece of paper). It's not possible to randomly select any video and have the tape conveniently next to the playback VCR (they don't even have that many) with all of it's stats and info ready to go. So the top 10's were evidently pre-selected and set up to run on the air live.

Do The Votes Really Count / Is TRL Real ?
Now this question has been around for quite some time, people become skeptical and think to themselves "Is TRL really real? Or is it just fixed and my votes don't count for anything.." Well a lot of people don't realize that phone votes received each day alone range up in the hundreds possibly thousands, and e-mail requests anywhere in the 10 thousands. If the producers of TRL just said "oh what the hell we'll just make today's countdown" the show would most likely be off the air cause people would figure out sooner or later that it's fixed. In the early days the phone and e-mail votes is where the video totals fell, people used to wonder why TRL only showed the percentage and not the exact number, well now that would look a little odd now wouldn't it.."okay kids now today *NSYNC got 245,928 e-mail votes and 103,122 phone votes.." percentages just work a lot better. So in short, the votes do count and the show is definitely real, for proof, plan a trip to the MTV Studios in NYC.
