'The Room Down The Hall' - Chapter 1

SO SORRY ABOUT THE NO PARAGRAPH THING, STUPID THING WONT LET ME HAVE THEM HERE! It was one day after school. I thought I’d have a great time. I’d go over to Meg’s house, jump on her trampoline, play with her cats, talk about guys, especially our favorite group of guys, the Backstreet Boys. I called my over-protective mom from school to tell her where I would be. She treats me like such a little child. “Hurry up!” Meg yelled at me. “The more time you waste, the less time we have to do stuff before practice. Oh, wait. We don’t have basketball practice tonight do we?” We were both on the UNI basketball team. “No crap, dip.” I said. I had to watch my mouth cause the secretary was listening to our conversation. She was such a witch and would send you to the dean for profanity. “Good Afternoon, how may I help you?” the voice asked. I replied, “Hey Mom.” “Hi! What’da need?” “Can I go to Megan’s house instead of home tonight? I’d be back by 11.” “Maybe some other night. Remember you promised Grandpa you go see Grandma tonight?” “Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. I’ll tell her. Hey, can she come along?” “If she wants to.” “Hey Meg, I can’t go, but want to go to see my Grandma in the hospital with me?” She said, “I would, but hospitals give me the creeps!” “Oh, come on! I’ll help you face your fear. You can wait in the waiting room and I wouldn’t be long.” “Well, I don’t know.” I told my mom, “She’s coming. When do we need to be home by?” “I’m coming home at 4. So don’t dilly dally!” “We won’t. See ya.” “Bye” I told Megan, “We gotta be at my house by 4 o’clock. We can maybe play a game of darts or something while we wait.” “Or do homework.” “What homework?” “I have math, math tutor.” “Okay, I’ll help you.” *Five minutes til 4* “Ok,” I said. “If triangle GHE is congruent to triangle PON, then angle H is congruent to angle O.” “That’s the last one,” she said. “Great, now I’m gonna change and we can wait for my mom. You can flip on the TV if you want.” “I think I’ll just grab some of your CD’s for the car trip.” It was a 2 hour drive to the hospital and my mom and I always fight over the radio. With Meg there, I had majority. I liked it when mom drove cause then I didn’t have to pay for gas. *In the car* “Hey Sara’s mom,” she said like usual to my mom. “Hi, Megan.” she replied. “Why don’t you stick in BSB for us, mom.” I said. “Ok. I don’t know how you guys can be listening to them all the time!” All the way there, we talked about how cool BSB were, how we didn’t know to keep our names or change them (Meg Carter or Sara Littrell). We also talked about Amber’s party on Friday, and how we wish Nick or Brian could have been there to play ‘Spin the Bottle’ or ‘Suck and Blow’ with us. Her party was so grade school, but we had so much fun! “We’re here!” I announced. “No crap enistine!” she said laughing. *inside* “Did Grandma get moved out of ICU yet?” I asked mom. “ISU? I’m going to UNI!” “Your stupid,” I replied. “Bout as stupid as that joke!” “That’s gonna leave a mark!” We both laughed. “She got moved to room 548.” my mom said. “Does she have to share with anyone? I hate that,” I said. “I don’t know.” *at the room* “Hey Grandma!” I said. She didn’t answer. Grandpa walked into the room. “She’s in a coma. The doctors don’t know if she’ll make it through the week.” He was so sad. I could see it in his eyes. He was afraid of being lonely. I barely knew my Grandma. I wish I’d gotten to know her better. I didn’t want her to leave this way. If there was no drunk drivers, this wouldn’t have happened. “She was injured in a car accident.” I was telling Meg after mom and Grandpa left. He needed some time to think, and eat. He hadn’t eaten since the accident, over 48 hours ago! “She was on her way home from shopping for my cousin’s birthday present. The damn druggie didn’t get hurt, that little son of a bitch!” I started to cry. “They say that they can hear you when your in a coma. Talk to her.” “I can’t.” I said running out of the room. Meg was close behind. “Listen,” she said. “I think I’ve had enough hospital bed and am ready to steal the TV in the waiting room. Come get me when your done. K?” “Ok, I shouldn’t be long. I’m gonna find my Granddaddy.”
