John was a mariner for most of his life. At the age of sixteen he was sailing to the West Indies, carrying fish. In 1884 he and Capt. James Pettes sailed to New York and brought the first Grand Manan ferry, "The Flushing" back to Grand Manan. He served as captain of the "Flushing" and later "The Aurora" (renamed Grand Manan) until 1914.
John also owned a grocery and dry goods store in Seal Cove with his brother James and Henry Fraser. He later bought out his partners and the store was renamed "J.A. Ingersoll & Son"> Captain John was involved in several types of fishing businesses as well.

The entire trip, which took them by boat to Boston, train to San Francisco, then by ship to Seattle, was a strenuous one. Ed bought forty acres of land on the Snohomish River. Ed's brother George lived with the family until his death ca. 1885. Ed's ranch was sold in 1960 to be used as a research station by the University of Washington.
