Wilson season ends vs. New Bern

Post 13 bats go silent in playoffs

Wilson Post 13 managed just four hits Saturday afternoon, July 19, and saw its 2003 campaign come to an end with a 7-1 loss to New Bern Post 24. Wilson managed only 12 hits in three playoff games -- New Bern had 14 in the final game alone.

With its seventh win in eight games, New Bern avenged an opening-round loss to Post 13 and went on to rout Wayne County 14-5 in the first game of Sunday's final in the double-elimination event before falling 3-2 in the second game. Snow Hill leads Wayne County 1-0 in the best-of-three Area One East final after a 6-5 win Tuesday. Snow Hill is unbeaten in the playoffs after holding off Pitt County 7-5 to win that half of the bracket. Pitt County outlasted Martin County 20-13 on Saturday to advance to the final.

In Area One West, North Raleigh has secured a spot in the state tournament after beating Cary 6-3 Tuesday and 5-3 Wednesday for the league title. North Raleigh stunned Apex twice in the double-elimination tournament championship Sunday after losing to Apex to open the tournament. In the other bracket, Cary defeated Schley for the second time in the tournament before seeing its season end vs. North Raleigh.

In other area tournaments around the state, in Area Two West, Whiteville defeated Spring Lake 9-4 in the deciding game five Monday for a spot in the state tournament. In Area Two East, Pleasure Island advanced past Morehead City. Rain has postponed the start of the best-of-five Area Two final between Pleasure Island and Whiteville, though both have qualified for the state tournament. In Area Three, top-seeded Eastern Randolph clipped Burlington-Graham 12-6 to win that series 4-1, and Kannapolis continues to hold a 3-2 series lead vs. South Rowan in a series that continues to be delayed by rain. Area Four's state tournament participants have been decided. Cherryville rallied from a three-games-to-one deficit to oust Caldwell County, winning game seven by an 8-2 score Sunday, and Pineville rested after wrapping up its series with Charlotte Post 262 Friday, winning 7-1. Cherryville has beaten Pineville 8-2 and 5-3 thus far in the best-of-five Area Four final, though both have qualified for the state tournament, August 1-6 in Fayetteville.
