Question:
How do I fly?
Answer:
Any paramedic that works for our system is eligible to take the "Air Crew Member"
class. Taking this class enables you to fly as the second paramedic on a flight.
Staffing of the helicopter, in this case meaning who exactly goes as the second
tech, depends on the system status and availability of the day as well as
the type of patient to be flown. The helicopter has two paramedics on every
shift who are the designated "techs." Every other shift one of the techs
is stationed at the hanger and the other is stationed at the Manteo station on
an ambulance. Whenever possible the medic on the ground ambulance will
respond to the hangar or to the scene or originating facility to meet the
helicopter. If they are not available (meaning on a call, off, or otherwise out of
position due to system status requiring them to standby at another station)
then another paramedic or even an EMT-I or EMT will be sent by the on duty
operations supervisor.

Question:
How do I get assigned to the helicopter
Answer:
To become one of the two designated medflight techs per shift, you have to wait for
an opening and apply for said opening. To apply for this position you must no
longer be on probation with the department. There is then an oral interview
with the Chief pilot, senor flight tech, and medflight captain.

Question:
Does your servie do any kind of specialized operations?
Answer?
Our service does not do any sort of specialized service or teams such as haz-mat, or
rescue. That is all local FD or state response system. However our system
does do critical care transports.
