Gary's Sandhill Crane Hunts

Hi, my name is Gary Loper and this page is dedicated to providing you with most of the specific information about hunting Sandhill cranes with me here in North Dakota

Hunting location- My hunts for cranes are primarily south and west of the Minot area. However, I have hunted for them as far east as the town of Drake.
Season dates- Tentatively, for the fall of 2002 the crane season opener should be 21 Sep
Note: Shooting hrs are from 1/2 hr before sunrise to either 1 or 2pm based upon std or savings time.
Best time for success- Beginning in late September, with mid-Oct being the peak of migration.
How many birds can a person shoot? The limits for 2001 were 3/day with 6/possesion. The limits should be the same for 2002.
Suggested gun/ammo for cranes- Any gun capable of shooting 1-1/8 oz of BB or larger steel shot or similiar non-toxic shot.
Hunting methods used for cranes- I prefer field hunting over decoys for cranes. September hunts will be over 24-48 decoys with the occasional pass-shooting hunt if we can establish their flightpaths from roost to feed. Hunts in October coincide with goose season and hunts occasionally result in a mixed bag.
