Gourry is perhaps the most cliché of the Slayers. He's a not-too-swift swordsman. But what he lacks in brains he makes up in brute strength and skill. He's a friendly enough chap, who sees himself as Lina's protector, though he acts more of a big brother or best friend then a gaurdian. He has no peception of time, as was proven in slayers Next when Lina asked him how long he would be with her, and he replied with, "Oh, I don't know...The rest of my life?" with his broad shoulders, big innocent blue eyes, and hair that could rival L-Sama's own, one can't help feeling attracted to this guy, kind of like a big, talking puppy.

His past hasn't really been confirmed. His birth place has been many cities, from the made up Testabourne ((Stephen Gagne)), to Zoana, to even Seyruun. Some things known from his past is the fact of the Hikari No Ken, or Sword Of Light, which has been passed down through his family for generations. In Slayers: The Motion Picture, Rowdy owns the Hikari No Ken, and looks unerring like our gold-hearted Mercenary. Also, he has said himself that his family ((Mother or aunt, I can't remember)) taught him that "It's [his] duty to be chivalrous," and to, "Always be polite to girls." Though he is the main supporting character, it is unlikely we will be able to see any deeper into Gourry's past. From what we know, he was just wandering around idly, until the First Season.....

First Season:

Gourry appears ((seemingly)) out of nowhere in the first episode of Slayers. Lina is attacked by the survivors of a bandit gang she *cough cough* ...encountered earlier. Lina's about to blow the bandits away when Gourry comes and 'saves the day.' After chasing the bandits off, he is surprised to discover he saved Lina, who he beleives to be "Just a little girl," and not some babe. He makes the decision to escort Ms. Inverse to Atlas city, as her protector. After Lina defeats Shabranigdou with the help of the Hikari No Ken, they split from Zelgadiss and go their merry way.

In the second half of this season, Gourry helps, albeit not much, defeat the Great Beast Xanifer, and the Kopii Rezo. Lina and Gourry continue on their way until Slayers Next.

Slayers Next:

Next, known as the 'Romance Season,' is just that, especially for Gourry. Not only does he make Lina uncomfortable, bonk Lina on the head, get kidnapped, get brain-washed, try to kill Lina, and even lose the Hikari No Ken for a time, he also participates in one of the most Memorable Slayers Moments. He and Lina kiss, for the first and only time. It is after Lina defeats Phibrezo, while she is possessed by L-Sama ((heh heh)), Gourry goes after her and embraces her. She awakens and they do the smoochy-poo. Unfortunately, neither Line nor Gourry remember the kiss, which kind of ruins the whole point.

Slayers Try:

Gourry could easily be called the main character in Try, or at least the Hikari No ken. As it turns out, The Sword of Light is found to be one DarkStar's five weapons. Though they do a fairly good job sticking Gourry back in character, at some times he's too 'smart,' others too 'stupid'. We see typical Gourry-ness when he lift's up Firia's skirt, looking for her tail. Nothing very earth-shattering happens to our Swordsman, since I don't think he really understands what's going on, and doesn't try to. After saving the world, Lina and Gourry continue traveling together on there own. ((Note: This section will be improved after I watch Try again))

Stix' Take:

I like Gourry. In fact, he was my favorite character for a short time. Though most consider him just plain stupid, I think he's a lot smarter then he lets on. Think about this, when he actually does come up with a plan, and the Slayers use it, it's always worked! The Japanese voice is all right, butI prefer the english. I suppose that could be because I have a small obsession with Eric Stuart, though. Heh heh heh. I don't really think Gourry should 'be' with anyone. He and Lina just don't match very well, and he only thinks of her as a good friend, maybe a little more. Him and Silpheel would be happy for a while, I suppose, but Gourry doesn't seem like one that wants to settle down. Besides, he might forget about her one day and just follow a bug off the edge of the cliff. And do we really want a couple noodle-spined, thick-headed little priests and priestesses running around?? ... Didn't think so.

Stri's Take:

I think Gourry is a fairly prediciable character in some ways and also not in other ways (hehe I'm being confuzzling). Gourry is slow and is reffered to as "dumber than dirt" but I don't believe that to be the whole case, it is said (maybe only rumored) that he has elven blood and that could account for him being slow, but more than once Gourry has come up with a last minute plan that has worked. Gourry, in my opinion, is a character used to explain what's going on to the people who aren't following the plot easily (maybe that's just me). Gourry seems like the kind character that you could get along with easily, that is if you could stand explaining everything to him. I more or less feel the same on the Gourry bias situation as Stix. There, I've said my thoughts however rambling they may be, I'm done.
