What is hip-hop? If you think it's music, you're wrong. It's a culture that consists of MC'ing, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti. Rap is the music of the hip-hop culture.
What is rap music? It's more than simply just rhyming over a loop, which is how it began. These days you have live bands perfoming the music. DJ's with equipment that can do amazing things. And the rapping has taken on a more poetic form, with similes, metaphors, and college educated MC's. Rap music is more than what you see on MTV and hear on your pop or urban radio stations. It goes deeper than Rap City and The Source. It has an underground scene as deep as any other genre. It still lacks the respect that it deserves from many people though.
"People still takin' rappin' for a joke
A passing hope or a phase with a rope" (KRS-One) That was written in 1988, but it still holds true today. A big problem is that many hip-hop fans themselves are under the impression that hip-hop revolves around sex, money, guns, drugs, crime, and violence.
"Rap ain't about bustin' caps and fuckin' bitches
It's about fluency/ with rhymin ingenuity" (Del) If you refuse to believe that rap is music, than ignore the reviews I submit into this magazine. If you're looking for something different, music with a message and little exposure, check my stuff out. I'll have an occasional mainstream review, but my goal is to give people a look into a scene that is often ignored: Underground Hip-Hop. I'll also be adding an editorial every issue, commenting on the current state of the hip-hop nation. Hopefully, things will be looking better by the time I do this again. Right now, mainstream hip-hop is a joke. (just watch MTV and see what I mean) Until then, enjoy my reviews, and I'll see you next time. Peace
