South Jersey Ska Scene

Updated 5/30/03

What used to be your one of many stops to exploring the South Jersey Ska Scene, but is now one the few and the cowed, err, proud.

Name: The Banana Factor!
Location: Pitman, NJ
Website: http://www.thebananafactor.8m.com/
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/thebananafactor
Albums: None
Contact: Luke @ lukeysays@hotmail.com

The Banana Factor has an insane stage show that features many a crazy charachter. My personal favorite is Jacob, who has size 15 feet. That is one mighty perch for a cow like me! They are working on recording an insanely long album, which will be done just in time for Jimmy Carter's return to the Presidency. Score! And on top of that, they are adding a string section! Just when you thought that they couldn't get much crazier...

Name: The Cherry Tarts
Location: Moorestown, NJ
Webpage: https://www.angelfire.com/nj/cherrytarts
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/cherrytarts
Albums: None
Contact: Michelle @ michellecherrytart@hotmail.com

The Cherry Tarts are a ska/surf band from Moorestown, NJ. They blend.... okay so they don't blend anything to play an upbeat communist style of music that will leave your knees sore and your mind warped, expecially for skankin' communist asians. Did I mention they have girls? Just thought the cow should mention that.....

Name: Dirty Larry
Location: Haddon Heights, NJ
Webpage: https://www.angelfire.com/punk2/dirtylarry/
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/dirty_larry
Albums: Lady in Leopard (2002)
Contact: Rob @ punksurfer15@aol.com

The hotdog brigade of rockingness is armed with a good, clean ska-punk sound and a knack for having fun in dusty conditions. Despite being spread out across a few states at the moment for college, Dirty Larry continues to keep the South Jersey dream alive. On top of the simple dream, they have their album out and ARE STILL PLAYING SHOWS! Yes, we all need not worry, Dirty Larry is not abandoning us any time in the near future!

Their new cd is great. Buy it. Buy several copies of it. They did not pay me to say this. Really.

Name: Drive-Thru Pharmacy
Location: Voorhees, NJ
Webpage: http://www11.brinkster.com/dtp
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/dtp
Albums: Ugly Baby Contest (1999), DTP vs. The Aceholes (2000), and Somebody Call Gian: A Decade of Hits 1997-2001 (everything from first two albums on one cd)
Contact: Mike @ drivethrupharmacy@hotmail.com

DTP is a mindbogglingly large ska band hailing from Voorhees, Franklinville, and Collingswood, NJ (all within the great wide open range of South Jersey, home of Walt Whitman). They have been compared to many bands, none quite so oddly accurate as being compared to Kansas. If you know who Kansas is, this is funny. If not, all I can say is carry on my wayward son...

Name: Jackson One-Seventy
Location: Franklinville, NJ
Webpage: http://www.jackson170.com
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/jackson170
Albums: Live From the Basement (2001)
Contact: Clay @ NjJackska170@aol.com

Jackson One-Seventy is back! They have a bunch of new songs and have a completely new keyboardy sound! They're also in the midst of recording, so you can hear some of their non-yet-mixed stuff at their webpage. It's really good!

Name: No Regrets
Location: Collingswood, NJ
Webpage: http://nrrock.itgo.com
Listen: http://www.mp3.com/no_regrets
Albums: Heiner Tap (2001)
Contact: nrskacore@hotmail.com

No Regrets is a worthless ska-core band hailing from the exotic pastures of Collingswood, NJ. Ska-core isn't all that common a thing to hear, but you can hear it on their album "Heiner Tap" or if you see them live in person. You can also see Zach say really dumb things if you see them live, which just one way that No Regrets goes above and beyond the call of duty to entertain you. They also are the official Fluffy the Cow "South Jersey Ska Band with the Most Entertaining Guestbook" award winners!

Name: Red Plaid Menace
Location: Pennsauken, NJ
Contact: Steve at toroksv@aol.com

RPM is a new band out of Pennsauken that are ready to take the scene by storm. Go ahead out and see them, and give 'em a big ol' welcome to the South Jersey ska scene. Tell 'em the cow sent ya. Or else maybe talk to them about NASCAR instead, everyone likes NASCAR, right?

Name: SGR
Location: Voorhees, NJ
Webpage: http://www.sgrband.com/
Listen: http://www.sgfnr.com/sgrband/sounds/sounds.html
Albums: For the Crazy Indian (1998), Livin the Good Life (1999), and The Temby Chase (2002)
Contact: sgr1@hotmail.com

What is there ever to say about SGR? These South Jersey ska-core animals already took South Jersey by storm, and are now working on the world after getting signed to Sonance Records, a new label out of Philly. Sure, they are collasal jerk sell-outs, but Frank is still as hairy as he ever was! (Kidding on the first part, not kidding about Frank). You can get their old album, "Livin' the Good Life" or thier new album The Tenby Chase...

Name: Short Arms
Location: Blackwood, NJ
Webpage: http://shortarmsnj.tripod.com/
Albums: Making the World a Little Safer (???), Demo 2002 (2002)
Contact: Bret @ skunkydunk@hotmail.com

Short Arms is a six peice ska band from Blackwood, NJ. Short Arms basically a) plays instruments b) plays shows and c) rocks like there is no tommorow. I wasn't quite this entertained by a band since Uncle Elmer used to play on the barn doors when I was a wee calf. As if that wasn't enough, they also sing about baseball and have just finished a new demo cd. Hooray!

Name: Son of Alf
Location: Southampton, NJ
Webpage: http://www.sonofalf.cjb.net
Listen: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/282/son_of_alf.html
Albums: Galaxy O' Fun
Contact: insert1namehere@yahoo.com

There are only two things one must know about Son of Alf. 1) They are named Son of Alf and 2) their inspiration is Mr. T. I believe he said it best with "I pity the foo who don't like Son of Alf".
