The Summit Area Jaycees is a chapter of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Our purpose is to provide volunteer service to the community and leadership training to our members. Our chapter serves Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Millburn, Short Hills, and Summit. Membership is open to men and women from 21 to 40 who live or work in our service area.
About our Chapter
The Summit Area Jaycees provide support to various agencies and charitable organizations in the community with volunteer labor as well as fund raising assistance. Our largest fund raiser each year is the Jaycees Christmas Tree Sale which is hosted by our friends at the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad located on Summit Ave. across from the Middle School. Trees and wreaths are sold starting the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Proceeds from the sale are used for grants to various local charitable organizations and scholarships to local needy students. During the 1998 Sale, we raised $12,000 for our contributions fund.
The Jaycees have also teamed with the Junior League of Summit in their effort to renovate the Mabie Playground. Our members assisted with a Halloween dance to raise funds and also provided manpower to the installation effort last May.
Other organizations we have assisted include the Summit Housing Authority, Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Overlook Hospital Paramedics, Summit PAL, Junior Achievement, New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, S.A.G.E. and Camp Jaycee, a summer camp for children from low income families. The Summit Area Jaycees also award scholarships each year to high school seniors from the area who has exhibited commitment to community service as well as financial need.
