Alpha Female #9 Update

Yellowstone Wolf Update #14

December 16, 2000

The latest news concerning Alpha female #9 and her new mate (now known as the Beartooth Pair) is that they definitely do not have any pups.

Volunteers working in conjunction with the Wyoming U.S Fish and Wildlife Service recently observed two sets of tracks in the snow and confirmed that the tracks were made by female #9 and her mate. No other tracks were found.

I am surmising that female #9 most likely did have a litter last spring, but for reasons unknown none of the pups survived.

Breeding season is fast approaching and if the pair remain together maybe they will produce a new litter in April 2001!

Female #9 has defied the odds in the past and hopefully she will again! As long as she remains healthy and has a mate there's a chance for new pups!
