Trapping of Idaho's Stanley Wolf Pack Begins

Yellowstone Wolf Update #8

August 8, 2000 -- Updated 8/12

As many of you might already know, there have been 3 wolf packs in Idaho that have been decimated in the past 8 months.

Right at this moment Idaho's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wildlife Services (formally known as Animal Damage Control) are in the process of trapping and relocating the large 14 member Stanley Basin Wolf Pack.

The pack is responsible for a few sheep deaths recently, and the plan is to relocate as many adult pack members as they can trap.

The 2nd biggest tragedy with this plan is that the pack has 4 month old pups that are NOT going to be relocated with the pack.

The pups are going to be captured and collared....and then released back into their own territory, alone. There will be no adults to protect them or to help teach them to hunt.

At 4 months old the pups do not have the honed hunting skills needed for survival. They will have to resort to finding and killing easy prey in order to survive---if they don't starve to death first.

Of course with their newly fitted radio collars, the pups will be easily trackable targets, and as soon as they even attempt to harm livestock, they will most likely be shot.

The rancher has rejected all offers to help him guard his sheep. He has even turned down offers to buy him a special breed of guard dogs to help better protect his flock.

There is something that we, that you and I, can do to help though.

Please contact Idaho USFWS, Wildlife Services, and the following people immediately to voice your outrage over this terribly cruel and inhumane plan.

To stand up for your rights and the wolves, call the Sawtooth National Recreation area at 208-727-5000. You can also call the Sawtooth National Forest at 208-737-3200, leave a message or try to talk to the Forest Supervisor.

Please help us save this pack! Don't let those in charge of wildlife management destroy yet another of our precious wolf packs!

We couldn't help Female #16 and the Sheep Mountain pack, or Idaho's previous 3 wolf packs, but maybe together, we can save the Stanley Wolf Pack.

We can't allow those pups to be left behind to die. Let's fight to keep this pack together and on their present territory.

Tell Wildlife Services and the USFWS to
MOVE THE SHEEP NOT THE WOLVES!!
