AMG REVIEW: One under-recognized aspect of R. Stevie Moore's body of work is that he has consistently been one of the few rock musicians who writes interesting, listenable instrumentals on a regular basis. 1995's Fundraiser contains several examples of this talent along with the usual eclecticism. Interspersed between the atmospheric instrumentals, brief ambient interludes and oddball rockers like "Who Gives A Fuck?" and "Migraine" are two excellent covers, a sterling rendition of Roxy Music's Bogart tribute "2 H.B." and a heartfelt version of Nirvana's "All Apologies" in tribute to the recently deceased Kurt Cobain. Even better is the second disc, which features a diverse selection of instrumentals (including "2 H.P.", a thoughtful tribute to Moore's uncle and mentor Harry Palmer) along with two pieces of found tape, "Knot Apes" (a prim-sounding woman's moderately hysterical renunciation of the theory of evolution) and "Bert" (actually a reprise of a very funny mock beauty show segment recorded all the way back in 1968 and included on Moore's very first album, Grease), and the vocal overdub extravaganza "Not One Friend."
