The Tinbuttu Rally

The Rally was created in 1995 by Dan Morrow of New Jersey, a member of The Iron Butt Association, with several purposes in mind:

1. To highlight the array of great roads, and interesting destinations that are within a day's travel of the New York City Metro area.

2. To give riders an alternative to the more structured long distance events. Most of these have minimum miles that must be traveled and/or somewhat fixed routes, checkpoints, or bonus sites. The concept of the Tinbuttu Rally is to let each rider determine a route and destination that is challenging to him/her and in addition one that is of interest to that rider. The rider is free to empasize the route, destination, or both.

3. To give riders a format in which to do a ride that is beyond what most riders do on a typical weekend. The idea is to leave work Friday afternoon and come back Sunday night with a "you'll never believe where I rode to this weekend" story.

The name of the Rally, Tinbuttu, was created by combining references to "Timbuktu", a city in the West African Nation of Mali, and "Butt", as in the Iron Butt Rally. Timbuktu is used in the expression "going to Timbuktu" to refer to a distant, perhaps difficult, place to which to travel. The Iron Butt Association, sponsors the Iron Butt Rally as well as promotes long distance riding, in general.
