Petra's Café is a flavorful delight

Brian Weeks smokes tobacco from a huka with Gabriel Estirado-Moore while the pair drink Turkish coffee on the patio at Petra Café and Restaurant Wednesday.

Near campus, you can satisfy your craving for something new and different. Petra Café & Restaurant serves delicious Arabic and Greek food at a very affordable price in a uniquely Mediterranean atmosphere.

Call-in takeout service and central location makes it a perfect spot to grab lunch when you're on the go.

Petra has served the UNM community for nine years with good food and friendly service. The restaurant is family-owned by Mahmoud and Menel  (husband and wife) Menasra, who perform all the cooking and serving.

Their two children frequently play outside on the patio or will be doing their homework at one of the tables after school.

Mahmoud greets every customer as they come in, and Petra is a converted adobe house.  Most of the food they serve is hand-made from Menasra recipes.  All of these factors give this restaurant a unique and welcoming feeling, leaving patrons the impression they are were invited into the Menasra home.

The indoor dining area is one room with hardwood floors, decorated with a hodgepodge of plates, swords, hookah, Arabic tapestries, and pictures.   Feel free to ask the owners questions about any of the artifacts which decorate their walls.  If time permits, they will paint a picture for you in the words of their family cultural heritage.

The front of the restaurant offers a covered patio, enclosed with wrought iron bars, from which Petra's customers can enjoy the open air or do some great people watching.

Petra also has unusual and interesting merchandise for sale, ranging from delicate tea sets to hookahs, which are Middle Eastern water pipes used for flavored tobacco.  College students can often be seen reminiscing while sharing a hookah with a few friends.

You can also find jewelry and jarred Middle Eastern staples, such as grape leaves and baklava.

Petra's menu is diverse and inexpensive, with appetizers from about $3, sandwiches ranging from $3.25 to $4.50, dinners from $6 - $12, and a variety of salads and desserts.

In addition, Petra offers a large vegetarian selection with no less than nine entrees.  My personal favorite is the "Petra Plate" (vegetarian). With a variety of other main menu items which include lamb and other delicious entrees.
