This actually starts off in the year 1990. Logan has left Madripoor to return to Canada for a bit and ends up in Vancouver visiting Judd aka Puck of Alpha Flight. The two of them start talking about the past while they're out fishing and that's when trouble hits. Lady Deathstrike words an order to Gateway wrong - telling him to send her to Vancouver, then continues that with "Send me to the place that Wolverine gazes upon this very moment." The problem? At the moment she said that, Logan wasn't looking at the scenery - he was looking at an old photo of Judd that was taken in Guernica, Spain in 1937. So what happens? The time vortex with Deathstrike opens up in Vancouver over the boat that Logan and Judd are in and sucks the two of them up into the vortex - but it's not done. It now dumps the group where Logan had been looking at... 1937 Spain. In the case of Logan and Judd, they're dumped in a bullfighting ring. |

While Judd is fighting the bull, Logan's off in the stands with Ernest Hemmingway and Inez (a Spanish Partisan fighting to try and keep the Spanish Republic from falling to the Fascists) - interesting part being that while Judd didn't recall Logan having been in Guernica, both Inez and Hemmingway know him and call him by name. Not only by name, but the casual way they speak with him seems to denote having known him for awhile as opposed to having just been introduced. |

Judd is successful in the ring only to have his moment of glory interrupted by the approach of bomber planes - which nails the timeframe as 4:35 pm on April 26, 1937, which is when the infamous bombing of Guernica began.

The four try to escape Guernica to head off and join the Partisans that Inez is a member of. They end up having to hoof it out of town and into the mountains after the car they're in is shot up after running a Falangist roadblock (Falangists = Spanish Fascists fighting to overthrow the Spanish Republic with backing from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy). Too many details to go into here - so for the full story, check out the Blood and Claws storyline which can be found in Wolverine, issues 35 through 37. |
