(Also Known As Trying To Piece Together Logan's Past)

1960s

Approx. 1964 - Fury 1

Events here are Nick Fury's memories of how S.H.I.E.L.D. began. What's that got to do with Logan? Well, HYDRA made their North American debut at Amican, a joint US/Canadian research facility located in Canada, stealing an invention of James Hudson - the Guardian armor. They also murdered every scientist in the facility.

The news of the deaths and theft prompted a meeting between the US President and the Canadian Prime Minister within hours of the incident. They agreed to a joint recovery venture with each side providing one of their best intelligence agents. From America, Colonel Rick Stoner of the CIA and from Canada, Logan of Canadian Special Services. The pair basically disliked each other from the word 'go', for much of the same reasons that Fury and Stoner didn't get along (Fury had gotten sent to the stockade in his military days for punching Stoner out).

Despite the fact that it was supposed to be a joint operation, Stoner kept trying to order Logan around. Which he pretty much ignored. Dressed as a pair of border guards, they were waiting on the Hydra truck. While Stoner was checking out the truck's paperwork, Logan was checking out the back in his own fashion. And as the back was filled with Hydra agents, the fighting was soon full-scale.

The pair parted on equally non-amiable terms, but it was on the strength of this mission's success that Stoner became the first head of S.H.I.E.L.D. instead of Nick Fury. Ironically, it was another Fury, Jake (aka Scorpio), that caused the death of Stoner years later which in turn led to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s rebuilding under his brother, Nick - but that is, as they say, another story.
