SPECIAL EXAM REVIEW WEB PAGE - CHAPTERS 1& 2

Introduction

This document covers the two (2) essay questions worth 15 points each on our first exam. Chapters 1 and 2 are in separate documents (see web page). Before going over the essay questions, we will discuss some aspects of the exam. See chapter one for even more information about the exam

About the Exam

There may be two versions of the exam and I will know who has which one, to keep you honest.

TRUE/FALSE AND MULTIPLE CHOICE SECTION

Paraphrasing the instructor about the exam: The exam consists of 20 questions worth 1 point each of True/False or Multiple Choice questions for a total of 20 points. I will now give you two free points (by telling you two of the questions.)

An example of a true/false question: Diversity makes good business sense. True (Page 8, paragraph #1 = 8.1)

[Belant comment: this is very closely related to meguffey.com multiple choice question, chapter 1, #4:

4. Which of the following statements is the most accurate?

*-->Customers prefer to purchase products and services from companies whose workforce and ads include people like themselves. (Answer page/paragraph 8.1)

The number of older workers is decreasing.

The workforce of tomorrow will continue to be predominantly male and Anglo-oriented.

A diverse workgroup is less able to respond to changes in customer base in local and world markets. ]

An example of a multiple choice question:

In the process of communication, the sender has the primary responsibility for

a. the message(?)

b. transmission (?)

c. decoding

d. feedback

The answer is d., feedback. It discusses this in Objective 2, section "Feedback Travels to Sender" To me, the textbook passage is unclear about this, only stating "Feedback helps the sender know that the message was received and understood. . . .we'll concentrate here on the initial message flowing to the receiver and the resulting feedback. . . . Asking questions encourages feedback that clarifies communication. . . . Senders can encourage feedback by asking questions such as, Am I making myself clear? and Is there anything you don't understand? Senders can further improve feedback by timing the delivery appropriately and by providing only as much information as the receiver can handle."

Perhaps I did not write down the questions correctly. In any case, if the meguffey.com questions are any indication, the questions on the exam should be clearly spelled out in the text, even though you may not have memorized the minutia the exam questions often cover.

ESSAY SECTION

There are two (2) essay questions, 15 points each, for an exam totaling 50 points. The idea behind the essay is to make it so that the student cannot pass the exam by luck or trickery - the student must know the material.

ESSAY QUESTION # 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --

One of the essay questions will be similar to the one in class where you work for an Internet company in a division that received record profits of 10 million dollars. As a reward, the employees are rewarded with an $1000 shopping spree. However, this reward is conditional on the employees getting together in teams of 4 which receive one company credit card per group. They have to spend a minimum of $1000 and can only go slightly above that figure - or else they have to return all the merchandise and loose the $1000.

Our assignment was to form groups, act as the group of 4, and follow what we learned in the textbook to accomplish the task at hand, and when explaining what we had done, to couch it in terms of the textbook. For example, did our group use consensus or majority rule for making decisions? (page 42, "Career Coach" box) What process did we use? What form did the phases take of team development as outlined in chapter 2, objective one, which include forming, storming, norming, and performing. (pages 38-39) Some decided to meet at a certain spot, use gift certificates or put things on layaway.

Instead, for the final, I might have an outing to the California State Fair or the King's Game, or luxury suite at the Monarch's game. At the Fair there's the Floral, animal, rides sections. The group has to decide how to accomplish a task. You would discuss selecting a diverse team, the elements of a successful group, such as a small group (chapter 2, objective 2, Characteristics of Successful teams, pages 40-42.) , and form an agenda. (Chapter 2, objective 6, Planning and Participating in Productive Meetings, pp. 54-59, includes agenda suggestions.)

Belant's comments: Memorize some of the steps, the aspects of a good agenda, and some terms, in order to throw in some of this stuff into the essay questions.

ESSAY QUESTION # 2

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --

A church, work, social club, or volunteer organization get together for a meeting about how to increase volunteers by 100%. You won't have to decide whether the meeting was necessary - I'm telling you it's necessary. You need to send out an agenda. First read past minutes for 1-3 minutes (Again, Chapter 2, objective 6, Planning and Participating in Productive Meetings, pp. 54-59, includes agenda suggestions and all the elements of this essay question.) You'll need someone to take minutes. You'll need a finance secretary, someone for hospitality. Stick to agenda 90% of the time.

Make up an agenda and tell me what topics will be covered. Talk about dealing with conflict, undermining people,
