In the early 1950s, the legendary Howard R.
Hughes, Jr. acquired a sprawling 25,000-acre parcel of land located along the
western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, well outside Las Vegas city limits. Five
miles across and eight miles in length, it still ranks as one of the largest
properties adjacent to a major metropolitan area under single ownership. In
1985, the property passed intact to The Howard Hughes Corporation. Then, in
1988, a bold plan for the property was announced: the creation of the
master-planned community of Summerlin.
This dynamic, mixed-use community will one
day be home to some 160,000 residents living in 30 distinct villages.
Summerlin, a community for the 21st century, is setting a new standard in urban
planning and quality development both locally and nationally.
The Howard Hughes Corporation has invested
more than $150 million to finance the construction of infrastructure and
amenities in Summerlin -- including Summerlin Parkway, Nevada's first tri-level
freeway interchange; five miles of arterial roads and seven miles of
residential roads; two golf courses, including the 18-hole, championship,
private Tournament
Players Club at Summerlin and the 18-hole daily-fee resort course,
