The Cardinal is the logo of Plattsburgh State athletic teams. It is also an unofficial mascot for the campus itself, and can be seen in many places throughout the campus and throughout the city as well. The colors worn by athletes at Plattsburgh State, red and white, go appropriately with their nickname.
The Cardinal Hockey team plays its home games at The Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, a 3500 seat rink adjacent to the Plattsburgh State Field House. For many seasons running, "Cardinal Country" has been the leader in NCAA Division III attendance, as fans throughout the North Country pack into the rink to root for their Cards. The Stafford Ice Arena has also been the host site for the 1987, 1992, and 1998 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championships.
The Cardinal hockey team, like many of the school's other athletic teams, is a member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). Other hockey teams competing in SUNYAC are Potsdam, Oswego, Fredonia, Cortland, Geneseo, Brockport, and Buffalo State. SUNYAC is among several other conferences that make up the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Association.
