DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MC
WHORTER
The best accounting I have seen for this line of McWhorter is a
compilation written by Mrs. Hinrichs who made an effort to record
actual facts. Contrary to popular belief, Thomas McWhorter was
not one of the eleven children of Hugh McWhorter who migrated from
Ireland to New Castle DE. All we know of Thomas McWhorter is that
he supposedly came from Scotland before the French and Indian War and
settled in New Jersey. Sometime after 1856 Tyler McWhorter of
Mercer Co. IL wrote to Tyler McWhorter living in Whiteside IL saying
that he had "an old Bible that my father had in my boyhood. In
said old Bible we have Family Record of the McWhorter family and of the
Buchanan family in my father's handwriting." In a letter written
by Mrs. Hinrichs in 1925, she says in reference to the Thomas McWhorter
line, "Our record, on a yellowed bit of paper pasted in an old family
bible -'Thomas McWhorter born in Ireland and settled in New Jersey
prior to the French War'."
SECOND GENERATION
Children of THOMAS MC WHORTER and (unknown):
+1. GILBERT possibly born Ireland; died Orange County NY; married
SARAH (unknown) who died about 1807 Orange County. This Sarah
probably is one who married second John Armstrong born 10 Nov
1727. The first wife of John Armstrong was supposedly Polly
McWhorter. John Armstrong made a will at Warwick NY dated 6 Jan 1797
which
mentioned widow Sarah. Gilbert, son of Sarah, administered
her estate 20 Jan 1808. A Robert McWhorter was witness to the
will of John Armstrong.
+2. Hugh born 1737 or 1747; died 6 Mar 1812 age 65 or 75 Avoca
NY; married Kezia Tyler born 9 Sep 1747; died 10 May 1841 as widow of
(unknown) Chamberlain. Living in 1775 at Warwick Twp
Orange County NY, he served as Sergeant in the regiment of Orange Co.
NY during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Rockbridge Co. VA
and is listed in the records there in 1785. By 1790 he is
recorded in the census as living in Northumberland Co. PA. Shortly
after 1800 he settled in Steuben Co. NY and had a farm at
Avoca. Probably one who appears one Assessment Roll District 8
Orange Co. NY 1775. Hugh buried Hubbard Stanton Farm Cemetery, Avoca NY.
+3. Mary born about 1740; died 6 Apr 1821 Dansville NY; married
about 1762 Essex NJ William Alexander Buchanan born 1739 NJ; died 13
July 1817 Avoca NY. William buried Hubbard Stanton Farm
Cemetery, Avoca NY.
THIRD GENERATION
Children of GILBERT MC WHORTER and SARAH (unknown):
+1. Thomas born 12 Oct 1762; died 13 Dec 1809 Orange Co. NY;
married Susannah Sutton born 5 May 1767; died 1 Dec 1827; daughter of
John Sutton and Deborah Bennett.
2. Possibly James born about 1760; was resident of Orange Co. NY
1810 and 1820. This is possibly James who came to US about
1800
from Co. Cavan Ireland, grandson of Alexander McW born in Scotland and
his wife, Sally Cox; moved from Clyde Scotland to Ulster Co. Cavan
Bailieborough Ireland sometime in the 18th century. (Letter of
Mabel Woods Hinrich in McWhorter newsletter July 2001)
+3. Henry born 18 Nov 1760 NJ; died 4 Feb 1848 Lewis Co. WV;
married 1 Aug 1783 at Bucks Co. PA Mary Fields born 28 Oct 1761; died
28 Aug 1834 McWhorter WV; daughter of M. Walter Fields and
(unknown). Both are
buried in the McWhorter Cemetery at McWhorter WV.
+4. John born about 1763; died 25 June 1797 Vernon Twp. Sussex
Co. NJ; married Margaret Carr born about 1765; died about
1848. From NJ Archives, Doc. Relating to the Colonial,
Revolutionary and Post-Rev. History of State of NJ; Vol IX, 1806, Jul 6
File 747S. "Account by Robert Carr,
guardian of Sarah, Samuel, Gilbert, Polly, and Hannah McWhorter,
children of John McWhorter of said Co., deceased; shows 230 acres of
land in Vernon was rented for 2 years @ forty dollars per year."
P.240 1797, Jun 7...McWhorter, John of Sussex Co.; Adm.-were Margaret
McWhorter and David Carr. Fellow Bondsmen-Azariah Martin and
Andrew Bradner, all of said co. Lib 37, page 280." Probably
John who appears on Assessment Roll 1775 Orange Co. NY. There is also a
Sussex Co. deed in the index- 1805 to Robert Carr Liber
N.334 from William Owen and wife Margaret Owen, wife was widow of late
John McWhorter of Vernon and sister to David Carr whose will was dated
1799, Mar. Vernon. Amity NY Presbyterian Church record: Marriage
of Margaret
McWhorter to William Owen, son of Israel Owen and Jane Ferrier.
Margaret died about 1848 at age 83; birthdate about 1765.
5. Robert died about 1811-1813 Vernon Twp. Sussex Co. NJ; married
Elizabeth (unknown). On 6 Aug 1811 Robert McWhorter and Thomas
McWhorter were appointed administrators of his estate.
+6. GILBERT born about 1765; died 1834 Sugar Loaf Orange Co. NY;
married (1) Huldah (unknown) born about 1768; died 1808 Sugar Loaf NY;
married (2) LAVINA (unknown); a widow of Jacob Feagles. Gilbert
left will dated 18 Feb 1832; probated 19 June 1834 Orange Co. NY.
Huldah's birth and death dates are from headstone at burying plot on
the old McWhorter Farm at Sugar Loaf. This farm became property
of Nelson Bertholf. According to the description of his
great-grandson, Deforest McWhorter of Brookton NY, Gilbert was a very
large, heavy man. He served in Col. Hathorn's regiment NY militia
during Revolutionary War.
Lavina (unknown) is named as wife in the will of Gilbert McWhorter.
It seems that the above-named Jacob Feagles married Mary Hallock and had
children. Could Mary Hallock also be known as Lavina Hallock? This is a
mystery that I have attempted to solve but have not found any evidence.
The children of Jacob Feagles and Mary Hallock are:
1. Jacob Hallock born 21 Jan 1792 Warwick NY; he
was a lawyer; married Susan Roe; perhaps daughter of William Roe and
Mary Winans. (Ida Gannon, a descendant of brother William) in her
letters 1931 remembers Uncle
Jacob being a lawyer. Her letters are quite clear that the children of
Jacob and Mary Hallock are half-brothers and half-sister of Levi and
Matilda McWhorter, whose mother is Lavina (unknown) married to Gilbert
McWhorter as his second wife. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP WITH THIS
MYSTERY.
2. William born 2 June 1794 or 2 June 1796; died 10 May
1868; married (1) (unknown); married (2) Lucinda Bigs born 17 July 1812 NY.
3. Nathaniel born 14 Jan 1801 NY; married (unknown) at Valois NY.
4. Caroline born 8 Nov 1804; died about 1888; married
Robert
Stoutenburg.
Children of Hugh McWhorter and Kezia Tyler:
1. Thomas born 15 Jan 1768; died 17 June 1847 Dansville NY;
married at Sussex Co. NJ 1783 Sarah Buchanan born 29 Mar 1768
Northumberland Co. PA; died 7 Jan 1848; daughter of William Alexander
Buchanan and Mary McWhorter.
2. Tyler born 10 Dec 1777 Orange Co. NY; died 22 Feb 1858
Marshall Co. IN; married 1798 (1) in PA Anna Armstrong born 25 Dec 1779
PA; died 9 Nov 1842 Blooming Grove IN; married (2) before 1850 in IN
Mary A. (unknown) born 26 Aug 1813 NC; died 30 Aug 1852 Marshall Co.
IN; married (3) 7 Dec 1853 Anna Rose born 14 Apr 1791; died 26 Nov
1867. Moved to Ohio about 1810; and about 1816 settled in Indiana
where he built a little log cabin which was still standing in
1925. He served in the War of 1812 Ohio State Militia. In
1803 Tyler was in Steuben Co. NY as shown by records. He left a
will dated 17 Aug 1855; probated 9 Mar 1858. He is buried in the
Summit Chapel Cemetery in Marshall Co. IN.
3. Betsy/ Elizabeth born 9 July 1792 Northumberland Co. PA; died
20 Oct 1814 Avoca NY.
4. James born 3 Sep 1785 Rockbridge Co. VA; died 22 Jan 1856
Avoca NY; married (1) about 1812 Anna Parker born 27 Oct 1777 Wyoming
PA; died 25 Apr 1854; daughter of Nathaniel Parker and Abigail
Garlinghouse; married (2) Arthusa (unknown). James left will
dated 19 Jan 1856; filed 1 Nov 1862. James and Anna are buried in "Old"
cemetery, Avoca NY.
From Northern Christian Advocate, Auburn, N. Y.:
Mrs. Anna McWhorter, wife of James
McWhorter, died in Avoca, Steuben Co., N. Y., April 25th, 1854, aged 70
years and 6 months. She was the subject of much personal suffering
during several years of confinement to her home by rheumatism, which
terminated in dropsy. But she was not unprepared for the anticipated
closing scene. The consolations of Divine grace which had sustained her
during the last quarter of a century, through faith in the Redeemer,
were abundantly sufficient to the last. Her eye of faith gazed on her
approaching Savior as she uttered the words, "come, Lord Jesus, come
quickly." Mrs. McWhorter was one of the band of pioneer settlers of
Steuben county. She was a resident upon the same farm for the last
fifty years, consequently she was an observer of many changes which are
matters of history to the present generation. By way of contrast, the
fact may be noticed, that in her early residence here, there was but a
single habitation where the village of Avoca now stands, and but one
between that and Blood's Corners. The early settlers of this vicinity
are fast passing away, and as their dust mingles with the soil on which
we tread, may we honor their memories and imitate their virtue.
