Broken Harts--Part Five

Jonathan looked at the clock. It was well past midnight. He must have fallen asleep while reading the files that Stanley had sent over. He must have been tired; it was not like him to fall asleep like that. He looked to his left and realized that he missed his wife and he wanted her back in their bed next to him. Just then the phone rang. It was their private line so he knew it had to be her.

"Having a hard time sleeping?" he said as he answered the phone.

"How did you know it was me?"

"Well you are the only one who has this number."

"I just missed having you next to me. The doctors say I can come home in a day or two. I am pushing for tomorrow."

"Well I would love that. I miss having you next to me as well."

The phone went silent. Jonathan was wondering if he should bring up what she had said in the hospital about going to Maryland. He decided he would; it could not hurt and it would get things rolling.

"So will you be here long before you head off to Maryland?"

"Well I have been thinking about that and I have come to a decision."

"Oh! And what would that be?"

"Well I think we should find out who is buying up all this Hart Stock then we should go away together and talk things through. I have not been very fair on you and I am sorry."

"Well you have been through a lot."

"So have you… I love you, don't ever forget that."

"I love you too."

"I will call you in the morning and let you know what time they are releasing me."

"Ok, good night sweetheart."

"Good night darling."

Jennifer hung up the phone. She was worried about her husband. She could tell by the tone of his voice that something was bothering him. She fell asleep thinking of him and how nice it would be to be back in his arms again.

Jonathan hung up the phone and wondered when he should tell Jennifer that the person responsible for the accident may also be the one who is buying up the Hart Stock-- her high school sweetheart.

Jonathan had asked Stanley to get everything he could on Bradley. He wanted to know about his up bringing, his family and his father. He also wanted to know about the company his dad worked for. Maybe it would shed some light on why he was buying up the Hart stock.

Flight 716 was preparing for it descent into L. A. Bradley could not wait to see Jennifer. He wondered how often she had thought about him. Had she though about him as often as he had though of her. Was she still beautiful? His heart started to race faster at the thought of seeing her.

"Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Los Angeles. We thank you for choosing British Airways. We hope that you enjoy your stay here and we look forward to seeing you soon."

Bradley picked up his brief case and headed off the plane. He was going to check in to his hotel then go by the hospital to surprise Jennifer. Maybe seeing him again would make her realize that she was still in love with him.

The doctors were happy with Jennifer's progress. Although they were reluctant to discharge her so soon they realized that she would be in the best of care.

"Ok you can go home, but you have to promise not to do anything strenuous. No lifting, no driving, no soaking in tubs and most important NO SEX until you have your follow up visit in a few weeks."

Jennifer, a little annoyed at the no sex part, agreed to all of her doctor's orders.

"So when can I go?"

"As soon as I get all the papers together you are free to go."

"Great! Again I want to thank you for all that you did, you saved my life."

"This is going to sound cliché but it really was just part of my job. I am glad that you are doing better. Now, go home and have a long talk with that husband of yours. He has so much love for you. I have never seen a man so devoted and so in love with his wife."

"Thank you doctor I plan on doing just that."

Jonathan had just finished shaving when the phone rang.

"Hello!"

"The doctor said, seeing as I will be in such good hands, he has no problems letting me come home. I want to come home. Jonathan please come pick me up."

"I will be there in 20 minutes."

Jonathan was walking down the stairs doing up his tie when he heard a knock on the door.

Max was walking out of the kitchen.

"Stanley is on his way up. That must be him."

"I will get it Max thanks."

"Ok Mr. H. how would you like your eggs."

"Just coffee this morning Max."

Jonathan opened the door to find Stanley picking up the papers. Sorry Mr. Hart I was trying to pick up a file I had dropped and…….."

"That is O.K. Stanley it is not a problem."

Jonathan bent down to help Stanley to pick up all the papers that were sitting at the front door. Although Jonathan always thought that Stanley was a good worker and a little clumsy, Jennifer got a kick out of it. He always was his clumsiest around Jennifer. It was very obvious that he had a secret crush on Jennifer. He never really laughed at Stanley. Neither did Jennifer. She was always so gracious and kind to Stanley. That's one of the reasons he loved her so. She never laughed at anyone or put him or her down especially Stanley.

"Mr. Hart I have those files you requested. I think you will find it very fascinating. The company that Mr. Chambers father worked for was taken over by Hart industries after a merger. He died a short time after words in a car accident. The police never ruled whether it was an accident or suicide."

"Really that is very interesting. Thank-you Stanley I will see you later at the office. Bye."

Jonathan was closing the door as Stephen is coming down the stairs.

"So have you heard from Jennifer today."

"As a matter of fact I am on my way to pick her up. She called a few minutes ago and the doctors are letting her come home. Would you like to come to the hospital to pick her up with me?"

"I thank-you for asking but I think this is a time for the two of you to be alone."

Jonathan and Stephen walked into the kitchen where Max was making breakfast. Jonathan poured the coffee he smiled at Stephen knowing that what he really meant was this would be great time for you and Jennifer to talk things through.

Bradley checked into his hotel. He was in the penthouse, he always liked to have the best of everything. He always reserved the penthouse, drove expensive cars, and wore the most expensive clothing. He knew Jennifer would be impressed how could she not; he was somebody and soon she would realize that leaving him was the biggest mistake she ever made.

Jonathan parked the car and went into the hospital. Jennifer watched him from the window at the end of the hallway. She was anxious; yet scared to be with him again. Jonathan saw her standing at the window as he walked off the elevator. She was a thing of beauty. The sun was shinning on her face and hair and he was in awe that she was his wife.

Jennifer turned around and saw him looking at her. She smiled at him and could not believe that she was going home and that she would be sleeping next to him in their own bed.

"Now this is a prescription for some pain killers you may need them. I know that you never took them while you were here but I think that you should get it filled and keep them with you in the event that you need them. Now remember what we discussed and I will see you in my office in 4 weeks."

"4 weeks! Are you kidding?"

"No I am not and if I had it my way would be here for at least another few weeks. So that is that. I will see you in 4 weeks."

"I will see that she keeps her appointment and that she gets this prescription filled."

"That is really not necessary darling I won't need them."

"Well we will get it filled just in case."

"Just in case of what?"

"You know just in case you over do it and you have some pain. I do not want you to experience any pain."

Jennifer smiled at him. His heart is in the right place. They drove home in silence. The tension was so thick you could have cut it with a knife. For the first time in their life together neither one of them knew what to say.

"Both Max and your dad are anxious to see you. They are so glad that you are coming home," Jonathan said as they were driving up the driveway to the house.

"It is good to be home. I am looking forward to seeing them. It seems like forever. There was a time I never though I was going to step foot in this house again."

Freeway came running when the door opened. Jennifer bent down and greeted the little one. "Oh baby did you miss your mommy? She missed you. Yes she did."

Stephen, Jonathan and Max all stood at the bottom of the stairs. Watching Jennifer play with Freeway. All knowing that it should have been a baby.

Jennifer looked up and saw them looking at her. "I am ok I am not going to break you know. I think I will go upstairs and unpack."

"We know that darling but we just do not want you to over do it. Here let me help you." Jonathan said.

Jonathan and Jennifer walked upstairs to their bedroom. Jonathan closed the doors behind him. He put Jennifer's suitcase on the bed. She opened it and started to put things away. Jonathan sat there watching her. He was so glad that she was home.

"Darling why don't you let me do that. You need your rest. You lay down for a while and let me finish."

"I am ok Jonathan. I need to do something. I will lay down later this afternoon while you are at the office."

"The office? I'm not going to the office today. You just came home I am spending the day with you."

"That is very sweet but you are going to the office and we are going to get to the bottom of who is buying up Hart Stock. The faster we find out who it is the faster we can go away."

Bradley walked off the elevator towards Jennifer's room with a dozen long stemmed red roses. He was hoping that she still liked roses. He was also secretly hoping that Jonathan was there. He would love to see the look on his face. How would Jennifer explain him? "Jonathan this is Bradley he was my high school sweetheart well actually he was everything." Jennifer would stand there and look at him with love in her eyes and realize that she still loves him. She would tell Jonathan "sorry but I still love him it has been nice but I belong with him." He chuckled to himself at the thought. That would be a hard hit. Loosing a wife and a company all in the same week. Bradley entered the room to find a nurse turning down the sheets.

"Is this Jennifer Hart's room?" He asked the nurse.

"She went home this morning. Mr. Hart came and picked her up they left to go home a few hours ago. Are you family?"

"No I am an old friend here on business. I heard what had happened and thought I would stop by and see how she was doing. I guess I will stop by the house."

Bradley left the room hoping that the nurse did not notice anything strange. He threw the roses in the garbage as he got off the elevator. " Well we will just have to wait a little longer for our reunion my love," Bradley said quietly to himself as he walked out to the parking lot.

Jennifer had just finished putting her toiletries away when Jonathan walked in the room with a tray of hot tea and toast.

"Well what is this?" Jennifer asked as she was walking out of the bathroom.

"I thought you might be hungry. Max went and had your prescription filed and your dad is downstairs doing a crossword puzzle."

Jennifer sat on the side of the bed and looked at Jonathan. "You look tired have you had any sleep?"

"I've had enough. You know me I can get by on very little sleep."

"I am worried about you. You need to slow down."

"I promise once I get things cleared up we will take a long vacation." Jonathan kissed Jennifer's cheek and got up and put his suit jacket on. "It looks like I am going to have to go to the office after all. I will not be long if you need anything call me."

Jennifer watched as Jonathan walked downstairs. "Stephen I have to go to the office for a few hours I know that Jennifer is in good hands. I won't be long."

Jonathan closed the front door behind him. Stephen looked up and saw his daughter standing there with tears in her eyes. "I am going to take a shower dad, I will be down in a while."

Stephen knew that this was just the beginning. It was going to be along road but they would get through it.

Jennifer could not believe how good it felt to have the hot water running down her back. She washed her hair and then she just stood there letting the water run. It was 45 minutes when she re-emerged from the bedroom. She went down the hall to what was going to be the nursery. She opened the door to find an empty room.

"Mr. H asked me to put everything away in the attic. He said it was something you should not have to worry about. Here are you pain pills Mrs. H."

"Thanks Max."

"You O.K. Mrs. H. you don't look so good."

"I am O.K. Max. Thanks for getting the prescription. Is my dad still downstairs?"

"Ya, he is doing a crossword puzzle. I guess you come by it honestly."

Jennifer managed to crack a weak smile. She knew Max's heart was in the right place. So was Jonathan's for that matter.

She walked downstairs and sat next to her father. She placed her arm through his and her head on his shoulder. Stephen put down his crossword and took his daughters hand in his.

"You knew it would be hard darling."

"I know dad but I really didn't think it would be this hard. He had Max pack up the nursery and put everything away. We should have done it together. It is as if he wants to forget. It is as if he is afraid to break down in front of me. I am worried about him dad. I can tell he is not sleeping and he won't talk about it. Why dad? Why is he avoiding it?

"Well maybe he feels that if he brings it up it will upset you. He loves you and he probably feels that you would rather forget. It was you who said you were going away for a while, was it not? You told him you had to get through this by yourself."

"I remember dad, you do not have to remind me. I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I was just letting out my feelings but he is keeping it all bottled up and it is not good. He is going to crack and I want to be there when he does, and forgetting it will not help anything. Just when did you and Jonathan get so close?"

"Well we have had a lot of time together since you have been in the hospital. He loves you so very much. It warms my heart to see you so well taken care of. Just give him some time. With all that has been going on with the accident and the attempted take over he has had a lot on his mind."

"I hope you are right dad. I am going to make some tea would you like a cup?"

"I would love a cup."

Jennifer kissed her dad and gave him a hug. She got up and walked in to the kitchen. She put the kettle on and put the tea bag in the teapot on the stove. She saw a file sitting on the table and went over to move it. It was open and she was shocked at what she saw.

"Bradley Chambers! Why on earth would he have a file on Bradley?" The thought of seeing him again sent shivers through her body. She hoped she would never have to see him again. If her father or Jonathan ever knew what he did to her they would kill him.
