Broken Harts--Part Nine

Jennifer had quickly stuffed the paper down the front of her top before turning around in the hopes that he would not figure out what she had or how she had retrieved it from the computer. She stood there in total amazement she could not believe who she was looking at.

"Well, well, well if it isn’t Marcus Fisher. I thought you were smarter than this. You are still doing what he wants. You are like an annoying tic that will not leave. When are you going to learn he is going to leave you holding the bag? He always did and he will continue to do so if you let him. You know that you will be the one who will take the rap for this and he will be long gone and the police will never be able to find him."

"Shut-up Jennifer. I do not want to hear another word come from your mouth. You know we wouldn’t be here if it were not for you. He had to see you. He had to let you know that he never breaks a promise. I would be somewhere in the Caribbean sipping a Margarita trying to figure out which office of Hart industries I was going to take while counting my millions. But you have put a stop to that. You have made a real effort to prevent us from taking over Hart Industries and you may have succeeded but you will be running Hart Industries because 10 minutes ago you became a widow. I always thought it best not to make business decisions while grieving. You are a grieving widow who made a bad decision."

Jennifer fought the tears for she knew he was lying and was just trying to throw her off the conversation. "I have no clue what you are talking about."

"That explosion that you witnessed was your husband being murdered. You see the car your husband, his cop friend, and your father were driving on their way to rescue you was forced off the road. We knew he would trace the call and come after you. We made it easy for him. You see Bradley’s dad was waiting for them to come up the road. Being a great shot he shot them off the road and boom…. the car exploded."

"You cold heartless bastard." Jennifer yelled as she lunged towards him. He grabbed her and was in the process of pushing her to the ground when they heard a gun go off.

"Stephen, Stephen, can you hear me?" Jonathan yelled as he shook him.

Stephen moaned as he opened his eyes and brought his hand to his bleeding forehead.

"What the devil happened?" He asked as he looked towards Jonathan and the burning car.

"We were shot off the road, they were expecting us. It was a set up. They knew we were tracing the call I am sure of it. Harry has walked up to the road to see how far we are from the house and to watch for anyone who may want to make sure the job is finished."

Harry came back with a tree branch that could be used as a crutch." I have checked the area we are about 100 yards North of the main driveway. I have not seen anything suspicious. Who ever shoot us off the road is not around. My guess is he/she left thinking the job was complete or they are planning our arrival at the main house for an old fashion shoot out at the ok corral."

Jonathan and Harry helped Stephen to his feet. They surveyed the damage to the car.

"We have our work cut out for us to get her away from that psychotic." Stephen said to them.

"I am sure there is a car there that we can take when we need to get away." Jonathan said.

"I will pretend that I did not hear you say that. As a law officer it is against all the rules to steal a car."

"Unless it is to protect you and others from harm. I think they will make an exception when they realize that you had no choice but to take the car to save us."

Jonathan took his handkerchief out of his pocket and started to tie it around the cut on Stephen’s forehead. "I think you need a doctor. You are going to need stitches to close this wound."

"I think my daughter is the one who will need the doctor. With all she has been through these last few weeks. I do not know how one person can go through all this and stay sane. If he has hurt her in any way I will kill him."

"He has already hurt her Stephen, in more ways than any of us will know. I do not think she ever thought it possible for one person to continually hurt someone. I am not sure she ever got over the last time he hurt her or if she just buried it so deep down inside that she just blocked it out. Either way she is going to need us to be there for her and love her. The most important thing is to support her with what ever she decides."

Bradley’s dad was standing in the front foyer with his rifle over his shoulder.

Jennifer turned around after hearing the gunfire and the colour drained from her face. At that moment she knew that Marcus was telling the truth. Bradley’s dad was indeed alive and he probably did shoot the car off the road. She did know that Jonathan and her dad were resourceful enough to save themselves and Harry. The chances that they were killed in the explosion were slim. Well at least that is what she hoped.

"Mr. Fisher, Mrs. Hart please stop this hideous horseplay and get up and start to walk to wards the kitchen."

As Jennifer and Marcus were walking towards the kitchen, she kept looking back as if she was seeing a ghost.

"You are not seeing a ghost and you are not crazy Mrs. Hart it really is me. I never died. My idiot son is to blame for this! He screwed things up really bad this time. I told him it was not worth it. That you were not worth it. He insisted that you were. I am sorry that he was indirectly behind the loss of your baby. He’s a fool."

Jennifer sat down at the kitchen table and looked out the window. " We learn what we are taught."

"What exactly is that suppose to mean."

"It means that you taught your son that it is ok to lie, cheat, steal, and hit. You taught him that it is ok to hit and smack around the woman that he claimed to love so she would do, as he wanted. He would have been so better off without you as a parent. Did you ever love him? Did you ever tell him you loved him or did you only tell him what a disappointment he was to you? You are a pathetic excuse for a father."

"With a mouth and opinions like that it is no wonder he hit you. He was trying to put you in your place. To teach you that women are suppose to be home cooking and cleaning so we would have a warm house to come home to at night. Where our drinks and paper are in the den and they will leave us alone and keep their opinions to themselves."

"This is not 1950’s. It is because of people like you that women have started to speak there minds and leave men the likes of you. Your son should have stood up to you a long time ago but instead he took the cowards way out and did everything that you asked of him."

"I do not need to stand here and be lectured on what a bad parent I was. I was trying to make him strong and independent. He needed structure and discipline and that is exactly what he got."

"Am I being held prisoner or am I allowed to go for a walk outside?"

"You can go for a walk but Marcus is going with you. I am afraid that after what I have witnessed of your actions you can not be trusted and need someone to keep an eye on you. Try to behave yourself Mrs. Hart."

Marcus waves the gun he is holding towards the door and motions Jennifer to get up.

"No funny stuff. I can see you from the window here and I am a pretty good shot, I never miss what I am aiming at. If you don’t believe me just ask your husband. Oh that’s right," he says laughing, "he’s dead as a result of my perfect shot."

"You are a sick and vile man I can not wait until you are put behind bars. That way you will be suffering. Death is to good for you." Jennifer says to him as she starts to stand up.

"Ok! That is enough. I thought you wanted to go for a walk. I have more important things to do than baby-sit you while you go for a walk. Let’s go now or you can forget about it and I will tie you up in the cellar where you can not do anything."

Jonathan and Harry were helping Stephen up the hill to the road. His head was pounding and there were times when his vision was blurred. He knew he was not in the best of shape but he also knew that his daughter needed him. He had been through worse when he was captured and held a prisoner during WW II. It was shortly after that when he joined what is now known as the CIA. He had put his daughter through a lot. He can not shake the feelings of guilt. If I had not been so concerned about my career I would have noticed the changes in her. I might have been able to stop that crazy fool from beating her and lowering her self-confidence. This all might not have happened if I had been a better parent.

"Stephen are you ok? Stephen! "

Stephen Edward’s was brought back to reality by Jonathan’s voice.

"Ya I was just thinking about a few things trying to get my mind off the pounding in my head. Look you two I am slowing you down. Just leave me and go ahead. I will be all right I just need to sit for a few minutes and catch my breath."

"We will all rest once we get up this hill. We could all use some time to catch our breath and figure out our next move besides my wife will never forgive me is she found out I left you behind. You are the most important man in her life."

"Correction we are both the most important men in her life. But I appreciate you saying that. "

The men finally made it to the top of the hill. They could see the house from where they stood. The only question was if they could see the house could those inside the house see them.

Marcus and Jennifer were walking outside. They walked in silence for a long time and them finally the silence broke.

"I am so glad you asked if you could go for a walk. I needed to talk to you and the house is bugged. He does not trust anyone and the rooms in that house are bugged so he can hear what is going on. He does not have us wear microphones or anything like that he just does not trust anyone. So outside is the only safe place to talk."

"I am touched. What is it that you have to say to me that you do not want anyone to hear? Is it your sorry about my husband? Your sorry I lost the baby, your sorry for getting involved with Bradley. What is it you could possible say to me that you want no one to hear?"

"Look I know you have been through a lot and you are very upset and angry. But I am not going to let you ruin this. I have been working long and hard on this and I have given up my life for the last 5 years."

"Oh I am so sorry. You have given up five years of you life? Well you will be giving up more then five years once the police arrest you. You are involved with a criminal and you have been involved with criminal actions. They do not look too kindly on people like you. I can not wait to see you behind bars."

Marcus saw that he was being watched from the window. He knew he had to do something. He grabbed Jennifer by the arm and turned her to face him.

"Sorry if I am hurting you but I have to make this look good. I am an undercover FBI agent. We have been after them for a long time and I am not quitting now. There is a lot you do not know about me or my history with Bradley. You see I never participated in his little antics. I am sorry he hurt you. That I could have stopped and I never did. I always wanted to be a law enforcer and did not want to risk it by getting involved with him. There is more to it but I can not get into it now with you."

"Why are you telling me this."

"I am telling you this because I do not want you to ruin it. I want you to go along with what ever I ask you. I am going to tell them that you started to give me some lip and I had to put you in your place. You are going to agree with me. If you look to your right you will see we are being watched."

Jennifer turned her head a way from him and looked towards the kitchen window she could see Bradley and his father watching them. She bit her lower lip and looked back towards Marcus.

"Fine, but I still do not trust you."

"What do you think that was all about?" Bradley asked his father.

"He was probably warning her about running away and pulling the same stuff she pulled on you in the barn. She is quite the little woman. I have a feeling she did not believe me and thought she could make a run for it and he warned her against it."

"So why did she look this way?"

"You really are stupid. He wanted to show her that she is being watched and if she tried anything stupid with him like she did with you she would not get very far. Now go down the road and clean up that mess. I do not want any loose ends left before we leave."

"Me! Why me? Why can’t Marcus go and take care of it."

"Well maybe because he has a better way of controlling Jennifer. You seem to be letting you hormones do all the thinking were she is concerned I am not going to let you ruin this again."

Jonathan and Harry looked towards the house and tried to figure out their options. Stephen looked towards the house and the surrounding area. He saw a small cottage to the South.

"He what about that cottage. It does not look like anyone is there and we can probably see what is going on in the house from there."

Harry and Jonathan looked at each other and thought about it for a minute.

"It might be good idea. There might be a phone there and I can call for backup and let my department know what is going on. Stephen do you think you can make it across the street?"

"Yes I am fine now that we are up the hill and have rested for a few minutes. There might even be a first aid box there that I can use to clean up this cut on my head. We better get going we do not know what there plans are they might send someone on clean up duty."

Jennifer and Marcus made their way back to the house. Bradley was waiting for them as they entered the kitchen.

"What were you two talking about out there?"

"You know you really are paranoid aren’t you. Don’t worry Marcus was just telling me a few things."

"Few things, few things. Like what. What did he tell you?"

"Don’t worry he was warning me. He told me that he has been with you for a long time, and that I had better not ruin things and do as I am told to keep the peace. Happy now?"

"No not exactly. You and I have some unfinished business to take care of well Marcus is taking care of disposing what is left of the car and your family."

"Your dad told me that he wanted you to take care of it."

"Well my dad is taking a long nap after the tea he just drank and you are going to leave while Jennifer and take a walk down memory lane. Marcus take your time we may be a while."

Bradley walked towards Jennifer and took her in his arms. He stared to kiss he and undo her top. Jennifer was fighting him every step of the way. "You can do this willingly or I can drug you just as I did my father. Either way I am taking you here and now. "

"Marcus I asked you to leave… LEAVE NOW!"

Marcus could see what was about to happen and he really could not bear to know that he could stop this and again did nothing about it. Especially seeing as he was now a law enforcer. The FBI was pretty lenient to a certain degree seeing as the Chambers men were on the FBI’s top 10 list of wanted criminals.

"Bradley I do not think this is a good idea. You can take a walk down memory lane when you have more time and a nice hotel room."

"I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE! NOW LEAVE."

He grabbed the water jug off the counter and hit Bradley over the head with it making him fall to the floor. A syringe fell out of his pocket. Marcus bent down and picked it up.

"I have a feeling he was going to use this to drug you and have his way with you."

"I guess I owe you. Thank you. I guess I can trust you to a degree. But not totally!" Jennifer was just grateful that Bradley did not get far enough or figure out that she has the papers still hidden down her top.

"I understand. I am sure that you will come to trust me and know that I am telling you the truth. Right now I have to get him out of here so I can get the information out of the computer, so we can put them away for life."

"What information are you looking for?"

"The information on the accounts they have all over the world."

"Well good luck in your search. Do you trust me being down here all by myself?"

"Now I do. I do not think you will go anywhere. The doors are locked and it would be hard for you to get out. Bradley will be out for a while and his dad will be sleeping for most of the afternoon as a result of that drug. But I would rather have you by my side. Okay?"

Jonathan, Harry, and Stephen had made there way to the cottage without being seen. Jonathan picked the lock and they entered the cottage. It was obvious that no one was living there or had in sometime. The furniture was covered with sheets and there was dust everywhere. Jonathan immediately went to the kitchen and the bathroom looking for a first aid kit or something he could use to clean the cut on Stephen’s head. Jonathan found some peroxide and some bandages and stared to clean the wound and applied a bandage over the cut.

"Stephen I really do not like the way this looks you really need to see a doctor about this. I found some aspirin, here take these they will help to stop the pounding headache you have."

"Oh Jonathan I am fine my main concern right now is getting my daughter. She must be terrified. I can not believe she has to go through this. We have to get to her Jonathan."

"I am sure that she is doing fine. If there is one thing I know about Jennifer it is that she is pretty good at taking care of herself. She looks at each situation she is in and tries to figure out how to get out of it. Besides I am sure she is writing a good story about this in her head.

Harry returned to the room with some news. He could not believe that the phone was still in working condition. By the looks of the house he would have though that the phone would have been shut off for sure. He was not going to ask why. He just knew that he was able to get through to his station and his supervisors.

"Ok guys you are not going to like this. I managed to get a hold the station. They figured something had happened when they lost contact with us. I have orders to stay put until backup arrives."

"You have orders to stay put Harry but we do not work for the police department and that is my wife in there. I am going to get her out of there before he tries to do something else to her."

"Jonathan I do not think that is a good idea. I have orders. Not only from my boss, but also from the FBI. They are just as involved in this case as we are and they do not want us interfering and ruining it."

"Look Harry that is my wife in there and I am not going to sit by watching and waiting when I am this close. Look you can tell them that when you came in here to tell us we were gone. That way you won’t be involved."

Jonathan and Stephen left the cottage and started to make their way to the house where Jennifer was being held captive.

Marcus was trying to get into the computer unsuccessfully. He tried every code he could think of. Jennifer could see his frustration. She still was unsure of his intentions or if he was telling the truth but she knew that if he kept it up the computer would lock him out.

"If you keep that up the computer will shut down automatically and shut you out. They will know that someone was trying to get into the system."

"Well do you have any bright ideas?"

"I bet I can get the information you are looking for. You just have to look for the obvious. Which you are not."

"Really."

"Yes really. Would you like me to show you."

"My dear the computer is all yours. You don’t mind if I hold the gun on you just in case someone comes in."

"No, but do you mind pointing it the other way? It makes me nervous."

"No not at all. Now can you hurry up I do not know how much longer they will be out for."

"Just one thing first. You have had every opportunity to get me out of here. I mean Bradley in unconscious and his father is out for the night as a result of that drug. So why not leave?"

"I have to have the proof. They have no idea who I really am and I want to make sure that there is no unturned stone. I need to be sure so they spend a long time in jail. Now can we cut the chitchat and get the information out of the computer.. Please."

"There you go. Do you want it printed or do you want to read it off the screen and try to remember it all?"

"How did you do that?"

"I told you. You were over looking the obvious."

Jennifer hit the print screen button and the information that would put Bradley and his father way for life was now coming across the printer. Marcus and Jennifer were praying it would finish printing fast. They did not want to get caught. Jennifer kept her copy hidden and did not let on to Marcus that she already had a copy of what he was looking for. She still did not trust him completely and was not sure if this was a trap or not. Besides if they did get caught she would still have a copy for herself.

"Great I have no idea how you did that but thank-you. Now lets get out of here and back downstairs before they realize something is going on."

"Who do you think is going to catch us? They are out for the night. You are almost as paranoid as Bradley."

"We do not know that for sure and I need to contact my backup. Now that I have the information I think we are ready to make a full arrest."

Marcus sat Jennifer in the chair in the living room across from Bradley. He tied her hands to the arms and whispered in her ear. "I have tied these in a slip knot you should have no problems breaking free. He is coming to and I do not want him to go stark raving mad. I will pretend to be coming in from checking the area. When he wakes up I will act as if I am relieved. I have to send the signal to my superiors and they should be here in a while. You just have to hold on a little longer. Can you do that."

"Ya I think I can. How long until they are going to be here?"

Bradley started to wake up he brought his hand to his head and opened his eyes. He looked over and saw that Jennifer was tied to the chair and Marcus making his way in the room. Or at least that is what he thought.

"Thank god you are all right. I went out to take care of the things we discussed and when I came back you were laying on the floor in broken glass and she was trying to escape. I told you it was bad idea."

"Shut up Marcus. I am not in the mood to listen to this."

"Look your dad is still sleeping. Probably an effect of the drug you gave him. I think we should just start parking up the truck and head out of here. The police have to know something is up and they will be sending someone to look for that cop that was with her husband and dad. I am not going to jail because of you. I am leaving tonight with or with out you."

Jonathan and Stephen had made their way up to the house. They looked in the living room window and saw Jennifer tied to the chair. Jonathan felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and saw Harry behind him.

"Harry you scared the life out of me."

"You really don’t think I would stand by and let you take care of this by yourself."

"Thanks Harry but what are you going to tell your superiors?"

"Oh I don’t know something like when I got off the phone with them you had already left and I had to go after you to make sure you did not hurt yourself. So what is going on."

"I don’t like it. Jennifer is just sitting there. She is not even trying to break free. That is not like her. Something is wrong."

"Well it looks like you lucked out today Mrs. Hart. It seems my associate is right and we can no longer stay here. Don’t worry we will have all the time in the world to play catch up once we reach our final destination."

Bradley reaches down and traces her jaw line with his finger. He tilts her chin upward with his fingers and brings it towards his waiting lips and kisses her.

"That is it I am going in."

At that moment Jonathan jumps through the window crashing to the ground.

"Get your hands off my wife."
