Secret Hart--Part Two

Crouched down in a corner the young girl cried herself to sleep. She had never known such fear…or such hatred. "I’ll never forget you, I’ll never forget you." She whispered until finally falling into a deep sleep. Little did she know that the real danger was waiting just downstairs.

"Sam, You said you wouldn’t hurt her!" Jeffrey yelled.

"I didn’t hurt her…it was totally painless." Sam said nonchalantly as he puffed away at his cigarette.

"That’s not the point! You killed an innocent woman!"

"It wouldn’t be the first time, if you remember correctly."

"What about the kid? What do we do with her now? Cassie was the only one who could handle her!" Jeffrey yelled.

"Well, first of all you stop yelling so she doesn’t hear us! Then, well, I say it’s time we got rid of her."

"Get rid of her?" Jeffrey stammered.

"Yeah, she’s just a nuisance to us. She is of absolutely no use now that we’ve gotten what we wanted out of our Ms. Saynt."

"You aren’t thinking of," Jeffrey stopped, not wanting to say what he feared.

"No, don’t worry, I won’t kill your little darling. I do have an idea, though. Just wait, it’ll be great!" Sam laughed as he got up and walked out of the room. With one last thought, Sam looked behind him and said, "You know too much my dear brother." As he took out his gun, aimed and fired.

Sam quietly crept into the room. "Where is she?" he asked himself when he didn’t see the girl. It wasn’t long, though before he saw her crouched in the corner looking as small as a baby. "Come on, wake up now." He said as he poked her with his foot. When she didn’t stir he kicked her hard in the shin.

"Hey!" She screamed as she woke up and began rubbing her leg.

"Hey yourself, now get up, we’re going for a ride." Sam grabbed her and pulling her to her feet he dragged her out of the room and out of the house. "Get in." He said as he pushed her towards his car.

"Where are we going?" she asked quietly.

"No questions!" He yelled. "I ask the questions here, remember? Now, tell me, how would you like to see your dear Uncle Al?"

"What are you talking about?"

"You know what I’m talking about, messy Jessy, I’m taking you home."

"Home? But, I thought…"

"That’s what you get for thinking!" Samuel sped up faster and faster until Jessica had to hold onto the car door in order to remain upright. It seemed like no time at all before he pulled into the driveway leading up to the orphanage. "Now, you remember girlie, you don’t say a word about any of this, Auntie Caroline will take care of you just like I took care of Cassie if you do."

"You killed her?" Jessica yelled as she reached for him intending to hit him only to be blocked by his fists meeting hers.

"Now, now, don’t be so mean, I am bringing you home after all." He said as he got out of the car, walked to the passenger side and pulled her out. Sam picked her up and threw her over his shoulder as he carried her to the hidden door located to the side of the orphanage. Opening the door easily, he dropped Jessica inside and shut the door. Pulling out a key he locked the door, went back to his car and left.

Immediately, Jessica stood up and began banging on the door yelling for someone to help her. When no one answered her she looked around and noticed a hallway. Not knowing where she was headed, Jessica began to walk.

"Well, what do we do now?" Jennifer asked her husband as they lie in their bed. Sitting up she leaned over Jonathan and laid her head on his chest.

"Sleep?" Jonathan suggested, without opening his eyes.

"No, not that."

"Oh, oh! Well, I’m a bit tired for that darling." Jonathan said smiling.

"Not that either!" Jennifer said as she swiped her hand across his shoulder. "What are we going to do about Jessica?"

"Whatever it is, it’ll have to wait until morning." Jonathan said, suddenly opening his eyes "Ya know, Darling, I’m not so tired now."

Jennifer grinned "oh, you!" she said as she leaned in to kiss him.

It was early morning when the Harts pulled up to the orphanage. They had set an appointment to meet with Alexander. What they didn’t expect to find, however were police cars lined up in the driveway while Alexander and Caroline stood on the front step.

"Alexander?" Jennifer called as they walked up to the door. "What’s going on?"

"They found Jessica." Alexander said happily, "Or should I say, she found us."

"You’re kidding? Where?"

"She walked into the kitchen while the cook was getting ready to make breakfast. Scared the living daylights out of her, too!" Alexander chuckled.

"Alex, what are you telling them all of this for, it’s none of their business." Caroline stated.

"Well, Ms. Saynt, Mr. Eeville, we’re done for now. We’ll need to bring the girl in for questioning at some point, though." One of the policemen said, interrupting Caroline.

"Yes, of course. Thank you for all your help." Caroline said as she walked them to their cars.

"Where is she now? Can we see her?" Jennifer asked excitedly.

"She’s sleeping, but I’ve told her all about you and how you know Max. She wants to meet you, too."

"Does she know about Max?" Jonathan asked.

"She knows he is her grandfather, she’s known that for a long time. I told her after her last letter went unanswered. Somehow, I thought it might be of some comfort, it only served to make her more angry with him."

"Does she know he’s gone?" Jennifer whispered.

"No, I thought it would be best for her to hear it from you."

"Thanks."

"Come inside, Jessica shouldn’t be asleep much longer and when she wakes up, I’ll introduce you."

A few hours later, a groggy teenager walked downstairs and into the room where Jonathan and Jennifer were waiting. Expecting to see Alexander, she jumped, startled. "Who are you?" she asked.

"Jessica?" Jennifer asked cautiously.

"Yeah." Jessica said, as she took on a defensive state ready to run from the room.

"I’m Jennifer Hart, this is my husband Jonathan. We’re friends of Max."

"Oh, yeah, Uncle Alex told me about you." She relaxed slightly and then asked, "What do you want?"

"We have something to tell you, about your grandfather." Jennifer and Jonathan went on to tell Jessica the story of how they found the letters and their search for her. The hardest part, however, Jennifer had wanted to save for last.

"So, do you know why he stopped writing to me?" Jessica asked quietly.

"Yes, sweetheart, he died before he could finish his last letter."

"Oh no." Jessica began crying. "All these years, I’ve been hating him for stopping writing even though he knew who I was and…oh no." Jessica fell to the floor and cried with her head in her hands. Jennifer went over and reached to pull her into her arms to comfort her.

"It’s okay," Jennifer said. "I’m sure Max would’ve understood. He loved you very much."

"How do you know that? You said you didn’t even know about me." Jessica looked up to watch their faces as they answered.

"We found something this morning before we came here." Jonathan answered. "It’s a letter to Alexander. He was making plans to adopt you."

"He was?"

"Yes, he wouldn’t have done that if he didn’t love you." Jonathan said.

(Ci)
Jessica rested her head on Jennifer’s shoulder and cried some more.

Jonathan and Jennifer exchanged glances.  How on earth could they stop this little girl’s heart from breaking any more than it already was?  They knew the feeling well.  Oh too well.  Jennifer loosened her grip on Jessie, but she held on tighter.  Then let go.  Offering her his handkerchief, Jonathan reached and touched her hand.  She looked at him with tear filled eyes and whispered, "Thank you."

"He meant a lot to us too Jessie.  He was our family...."

(Michelle)
Jessica wiped her eyes with Jonathan's handkerchief and tried to stop the tears.  It was a losing battle, however and through her tears she asked "Can you tell me about him?  I mean I know some things, but only what he told me in the letters."

"Of course, we'd love to have a reason to talk about Max." Jennifer said.

Jonathan, Jennifer and Jessica spent the next few hours in the little room talking about Max and how much he meant to all of them. After a while, Jessica's stomach started growling rather ferociously.

"Maybe we should stop now and get something to eat." Jennifer suggested.

"No, I want to keep talking, please?" Jessica pleaded.

"You've been through a lot, I think you should rest.  I wonder what's taken Alexander so long?" Jonathan said.

"Hmm, maybe you should go look for him and see about some food?" Jennifer said.

"Yeah, I'll do that. I'll be right back." As Jonathan left he leaned over and kissed Jessica on the forehead.  "Everything will be okay, I promise."

A few minutes later Jonathan returned with Alexander and a tray full of sandwiches in tow.  Jessica got up and hugged Alexander tightly.

"I've missed you Uncle Alex."

"Not as much as I've missed you Jessie.  Now eat, you must be starving!  Then we have a lot to talk about."  Jessica nodded her head and everyone started eating.

Sam was on his way to the airport. He had already cleaned up the house, making sure to not leave any trace of himself behind.  He wasn't planning on leaving for long, but he knew that he had to get out of town before Jessica sent the police to the house.  He knew she would say something; it was only a matter of time.  He only hoped that Caroline could keep her quiet long enough for him to set the next phase of his plan into motion.

Jessica was spent, emotionally and physically.  She had just finished telling the Harts, Alexander and a police officer about the time she spent in Sam's clutches.  She had tried to remain calm, but every time she thought of that time she thought of Cassie and what Sam did to her.

Sam had never seemed like the murdering type to her.  Sure, he had kidnapped her and left her for days without food or water, but he'd always bring her something eventually.  The police officer had already questioned Caroline when Jessica mentioned her and now she was on her way to the county jail.  Of course, Caroline swore innocence.  The police had no grounds to arrest her so she was let go.

"Tell us about your friend." Jennifer said.

"She was great.  She was Jeffrey's fiancée.  I never really saw Jeffrey, but Cassie always took care of me.  I miss her so much." Jessica cried.

"Do you know who Jeffrey and Sam were?" the police officer asked.

"Did they ever tell you what their last names were?"

"No, but Cassie told me.  They're my mom's step-brothers."

"What do you mean?  We only had one step-brother." Alexander said.

"Apparently, Sam was sent away when he was young and no one ever mentioned him again."

"Now, he's out for revenge." said Jonathan.

"Well, I think we have enough for now, a dispatch has been sent to the house you mentioned.  We'll contact your uncle if we need to talk to you again, ok?" the police officer said.

Jessica nodded her head and then looked at Jonathan's handkerchief that she still had in her hand.

"Jessie, I think maybe you should get some rest now." Jennifer suggested.

"Uncle Alex, could I go home with you? I don't want to stay here."

"Oh, Jess, I think you'll be fine here.  Besides, I live in a one-room hole-in-the-wall, hardly a place for a teenage girl."

Jessica began to cry when Jennifer asked, "Why don't you want to stay here?"

"I, I just feel awful here.  Like someone is watching me constantly, waiting for a chance to take me away again.  Please don't make me stay here." Jessica cried harder.

"Alexander, Maybe Jessica could come stay with us." Jennifer suggested as she put her arm around the girl.  Jessica looked up sharply and her tears ceased suddenly.

"Well, she is a ward of the state, you'd have to file for adoption or foster parenting and that could take months."

"Surely, there's some loophole so that she doesn't have to stay here." Jonathan said.

"I really shouldn't do this.  I could get into a lot of trouble, but these are very unusual circumstances.  So, okay, I'll draw up papers to give you temporary custody of Jessica.  It'll only be conditional until we can get her to a new place, though." Alexander said.

"Good enough." Jennifer said. "Come on, let's get you packed."

(Ci)
Once she was all packed and ready to go.  A part of Alexander was happy to see Jessica so happy.  He was worried though, for her life.  Seeing his worry, Jonathan reassures him, "She'll be fine.  We'll take good care of her."

"Jessica, call me as soon as you reach the Hart's home."

"I will uncle Alex.  Thank you for allowing me to go. " Just then Caroline walked in, "What’s going on here?"

"Jessica is going to stay with the Harts for a few days..."

"You know that’s against the rules.  She will have to be adopted by the Harts in order for them to take her."

"The papers are already being drawn up."  Jennifer coolly said.

Caroline is sickened at the thought of them taking Jessica, suppose they figured things out. Panicking Caroline left the room to call Sam hoping he would know what she should do.

(Michelle)
"So, shall we go now?" Jennifer said to Jessica who was nervously standing by the door.

"Umm, yeah. I’m ready." Jessica said as she bit her lower lip.

"Hey, what’s wrong?" Jonathan asked, noticing her nervousness.

"Nothing." She answered quickly while walking out the door.

"She’s scared." Alexander said

"Yes, who wouldn’t be? Don’t worry, we won’t let anything happen to her." Jennifer said as she and Jonathan linked hands and followed Jessica’s path.

"Well, here we are." Jennifer said as they pulled into the driveway of the Malibu home they were renting. "What do you think?"

"It’s so big!" Jessica exclaimed.

"Come on, let’s get this stuff inside." Jennifer said as she and Jonathan got out of the car. Jessica slowly exited the car and stood still staring at the house.

"Wow." She said as Jennifer linked her arm to Jessica’s and walked her to the house.

Once inside Jessica’s awe didn’t diminish. She had never seen such grand furniture and décor. Her concentration was, however disturbed when a dog began to sniff her feet.

"Hey doggie." Jessica said as she reached down to start petting the dog.

"Freeway, meet Jessica, Jessica meet Freeway Jr." Jonathan said. "How about we show you your room so you can get settled?"

"Okay. Come on Freeway." Jessica said as she followed Jonathan and Jennifer up the stairs.

"Hello?" Sam said into his cell phone as he got out of his car at the airport.

"Sam, we’ve got a problem." Caroline said.

"What kind of problem?"

"The Harts took Jessica home with them."

"So?" Sam said, getting aggravated.

"So? All you can say is so? What if she talks to them?"

"She isn’t going to say anything new, she’s already told the police everything thanks to your incompetence!"

"What did you want me to do, lock her in a closet?" Caroline yelled, than quietly asked, "What happens now?"

"Don’t you worry about that, I’ve got it all planned. You’ve got the locket right?"

"The locket?"

"Yes, where is the locket?"

"Umm, I don’t know. I lost it."

"YOU WHAT?" Sam screamed drawing the attention of some bystanders. "How could you loose it, what was the point of all this if you don’t even have the locket!"

Caroline began to cry. " I, I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking. Why do you need that stupid locket anyway?"

"Listen kid, you’ve screwed up royally, don’t worry about why I need it, you have more to worry about. You have to find that locket." Sam hung up the phone and headed for the terminal ready to hop on the next plane going anywhere.

After Sam hung up on her Caroline went to find Alexander. Maybe he knew where the locket was.

"Alexander?" Caroline called into his room.

"What do you want?" He called back as he opened the door.

"Now, now there’s no need to be so hostile." Caroline said.

"Cut it Caroline, I know you had something do with Jessica’s disappearance. She wouldn’t have said you did if you didn’t, so just cut it."

"Oh, please, why would I want to hurt your precious Jessica?"

"What do you want?"

"Umm, I lost a locket and I was just wondering if you’d seen it?"

"A locket?" Alexander said as he looked at her suspiciously "Yeah, I found a locket."

"You did! Oh great! Where is it? I really need it back." Caroline said excitedly.

"I don’t know where it is. I misplaced it." Alexander lied.

"Oh good grief!" Caroline exclaimed.

"I have to go check on Jessie at the Harts’ so if you don’t mind…" Alexander said as he left the room.

Alexander pounded on the front door of the house. He didn’t know how long he had been knocking when Jonathan finally answered the door.

"Alexander? What are you doing here?" Jonathan asked.

"I have news. Apparently Caroline is missing a locket and really wants to find it."

"Come inside, I’ll get Jennifer."

Caroline searched Alexander’s room first. Then she went to Jessica’s room, tearing both rooms apart as in her quest. After not finding the locket, Caroline began searching the rooms of the other orphans, then every room she could think of. By the time she was finished, the orphanage looked like a tornado had struck.

"What are you doing, Ms. Caroline?" one of the little ones asked when she came charging into the schoolroom. Ignoring the stares of the children and the teachers Caroline proceeded to overturn every book, paper and desk in the room. After she left, one of the teachers followed her out.

"Caroline? Is something wrong?" the teacher asked.

"No, just forget what you just saw and get on with teaching." Caroline said as she walked away.

"Aww, do I have to?" Jessica whined.

"No, not at all, you can always sit around here all day watching Freeway run from room to room." Jennifer said.

"Cool! Great! Then it’s settled!" Jessica smiled.

"Not so fast. I don’t want to watch you watching Freeway running from room to room so go get the books we bought for you. There should be some pens in that drawer over there." Jennifer pointed to the table that sat by the wall of the living room.

Jessica mumbled under her breath as she went to get the books and pens. "I heard that!" Jennifer said as Jonathan walked into the living room.

"Aren’t teenagers fun?" He asked.

" I heard that!" Jessica yelled from the adjoining hallway.

"Hurry up, we have to get you registered before classes start and Jonathan has to go to work."

"Well, if he really needs to get there we can always do this another day." Jessica said innocently as she walked back into the room and over to the desk with the pens.

"Sorry, Kiddo, I’m the boss, I don’t have to be there until I wanna be there." Jonathan said as he grabbed Jessica and Jennifer’s coats and handed them to them.

"Well, what do you know?" Sam asked as he talked to Caroline on a pay phone.

"The locket is gone. I can’t find it anywhere in the orphanage, I even ransacked Alexander’s apartment. It’s just gone." Caroline replied from her cell phone.

"Well, where could it be?"

"I don’t’ know, maybe the Harts have it."

"Find out."

"When? How? That house has better security then the Pentagon!" Caroline complained.

"Listen, never mind, it is apparent that I can not deal with you anymore. I’ll have to do it myself." Sam got ready to hang up the phone.

"No, no, I’ll do it, just give me time. "

"You have 4 hours." Sam hung up the phone and walked back to the cabin he had rented. Letting himself into the patio he sat down on the chair on the patio and fell asleep.

"4hours? Are you nuts?" Caroline yelled into the phone before slamming it shut.

After registering Jessica for school and dropping Jonathan off at work, Jennifer headed to her editor’s office. She was already a day late for her deadline and didn’t want to make it any later. Once the article she’d written was safe and in her editor’s hands she headed home.

Caroline had managed to hide around the side of the house. She waited patiently until she saw Jennifer unlock the door. She gave her enough time to turn off the alarm and then she made her move. Caroline tiptoed into the house and looked around. Hearing Jennifer talking to the dog in the kitchen Caroline quietly made her way through the house. Reaching the kitchen door she halted. Then she waited until she heard footsteps coming towards the door. When Jennifer came out of the door Caroline reached from her hiding place behind it, and holding the syringe in her hand tightly she poked it into Jennifer’s shoulder.

"What?" Jennifer spun around quickly, too quickly because the effects of the drug in her system knocked her into unconsciousness.

"Well, Sammy, now you know why I dated that doctor for so long." Caroline laughed as she proceeded to tear the house apart.

"Jennifer?" Jessica called as she walked into the house. It was a mess. Jessica sat her books down and began looking around. She called for Jennifer as she walked until she saw her, lying still on the floor. Pictures of finding Cassie in much the same position ran through her mind and she screamed. This time, however she didn’t run from the room. She crept over to where Jennifer lay slowly and holding her hand slightly over Jennifer’s nose she sighed with relief when she felt her breath.

"It wasn’t there." Caroline told Sam.

"Well, find it. I’m on my way back." Sam said as he hung up the phone.

"Luckily, whoever it was who did this to you only wanted to knock you out. They used a mild anesthesia that is wearing off on it’s own. You’ll be fine." The doctor told Jennifer as Jonathan stood next to her chair in a hospital room.

"Thank God." Jonathan said as he leaned in and kissed her on the forehead. "You had us pretty scared, Darling."

Jennifer smiled. "Can I go home now?"

"Well, I don’t know, it’d probably be a good idea for you to stay here for observation."

"Please, I can’t stay here." Jennifer pleaded.

"Alright, but I want to see you in a couple days just to check up on you. Okay?"

"You can count on it." Jonathan said as he led Jennifer from the room.

(Ci)
Jennifer watched as Jr. followed Jessica running around the yard.  There were so many sweet things about this girl.  She was sure Jessica had endured the hardest times of her life.  If only there was something she could do...she got an idea...and called out to Jonathan who was preparing sandwiches.

"Darling?  You rang?"  He came in with a tray and set it on the table.  Bowing after setting it down.

Smiling at her suitor, she nodded at him.  "Darling, remember that story I did about the runaway’s a few years back?"

Knowing very well that this was about to lead them in another avenue, Jonathan sat down to hear his wife and to look into those eyes that gave away her ticking thoughts.

"Yes, but she’s no runaway."

"No, but remember the homes and families who some of the children were placed with?  Perhaps we could find a place for Jessie on our own."

"...And she could stay here until we found her a home..."

"YES!  Exactly."

"Darling, I’m not sure that would be a good idea."

"But Jonathan, you know this child needs support."

"Yes, and I know she would need more time than either you or I could give her..."

(Michelle)
"But, Darling, she is potty trained, she can feed and clothe herself. It’s not like she’s an infant." Jennifer said.

"Sweetheart, this is a big deal. I think we need to think about it, okay?" Jonathan asked her as he touched her gently on the face.

"Okay." Jennifer acquiesced.

Just then they heard a squeal coming from the yard as Junior sidled up to Jessica who had sat down on the grass and began licking her on the face. Jonathan and Jennifer giggled as they walked over to join the happy twosome.

"What are you going to do?" Caroline asked cautiously. She and Sam were holed up in an old farmhouse. The owners were, luckily, out on vacation.

"I’m going to get that locket! I can’t believe you lost it Caroline!"

"What is so important about that stupid locket anyway?" Caroline asked. Sam grabbed her by both shoulders angrily.

"You stupid, insolent girl! What do you think this is all about? What do you think Elizabeth had on me?"

"I don’t know!" She yelled, now getting very scared.

"Why do I have to explain everything to you? You remember good ole Davis don’t you?"

"Yeah." Caroline said while fighting back tears.

"I killed him and Elizabeth knew it."

"Hey, look what I found!" Jessica came down into the living room excitedly. "It’s a locket."

"Where’d you get that?" Jonathan asked as he reached for the locket.

"It was in with my hair stuff."

Jonathan took the locket and began examining it closely.

"Is something wrong?" Jessica asked.

"No, it’s just that Sam was looking for that locket." Jennifer said as she walked over to where Jonathan was standing. "Try opening it?"

"Why was he looking for it?" Jessica walked to stand beside Jennifer and Jonathan.

"We don’t know." Jennifer answered as Jonathan flipped the locket open. "Well, would you look at that?"

When opened, the locket revealed another smaller locket and a piece of carefully folded up paper. Jennifer took the smaller locket and opened it. Inside was a picture of a baby girl.

"That’s me!" Jessica exclaimed as she took the small locket from Jennifer’s grasp. "Look, it has an inscription on the other side…’Mommy’s little angel’. This must’ve been my mother’s." Jessica said softly as she went to clasp the locket around her neck. Jennifer helped her with the clasp as Jessica played with the locket quietly. "I think I’m going to take a walk down by the beach."

"Ok, just be careful."

"Always." Jessica said as she headed for the door.

"What do you think?" Jennifer asked after Jessica had left.

"I think whatever is written on this paper will tell us why Caroline wanted it so bad."

"Well, let’s see what it says then."

Jonathan unfolded the paper and read it aloud. "Jeffrey, Sam killed Davis. Stay away from him. Liz"

"Wow." Jennifer said, "Sam must have intercepted that note."

"Or Jeffrey showed it to him. Then Sam turned on him and sent him into hiding."

"Possibly, but who is Davis and how did this note get into Elizabeth’s locket. Wait, the back of the larger locket, that was from Sam to Caroline, wasn’t it?"

"That’s what we assumed. Maybe Sam gave the note to Caroline to keep safe."

"And Caroline lost it."

Sam tiptoed through the woods beside the Hart house. He jumped slightly when the door opened and Jessica walked out. Jessica walked along the walk close to him. As she went past his hiding spot he saw the locket around her neck and he knew…they knew his secret.

Jessica had been sitting on the beach letting the water roll over her feet when she heard someone come up behind her. Twisting around quickly she reached for the ankles of the person sneaking up to her. The person fell to the ground in a heap as Jessica looked and saw that the person she had just knocked off balance was Jonathan.

"Oh, I am so sorry!" Jessica exclaimed as she tried to help him get up.

"It’s alright, I’m glad you took our advice to be careful so seriously." Jonathan said as they sat back down on the sand. "Are you okay?"

"I guess. It’s just sometimes I wish I had my mom here with me. Ya know, I don’t even remember what she looked like."

"I don’t know what my folks looked like either." Jonathan said as he gently pushed a piece of her hair back behind her ear.

"But you had Max." Jessica said tearily. "I have no one, not even Uncle Alex."

"You have us, me and Jennifer."

"But only until Uncle Alex finds me somewhere else to live. Then those people will decide they don’t want me either and I’ll have to keep going from foster home to foster home because no one wants to adopt a teenager. Babies, everyone wants babies!" Jessica got up and started to walk towards the house just as Jennifer and Junior reached the spot where they had been sitting.

"Hey, what’s wrong?" Jennifer asked as she reached to touch Jessica’s arm.

"Nothing." Jessica said as she ran for the house, Freeway Junior following close behind.

"What happened?" Jennifer asked

"We were just talking. She’s afraid no one wants her."

"Poor thing. I should go to her."

"You know, what if Max had never taken me in. Where would any of us be now? I’m sure he wondered what he was getting into."

"I’m sure he did, but that’s who Max was, he had a huge heart and so do you." Jennifer wrapped her arms around Jonathan and they stood there on the beach holding each other lovingly.

After a while they headed back to the house to find Jessica. When they reached the front door, however they saw a note on the door.

"What is it with people leaving us notes lately?" Jennifer said.

"They have Jessie."

"What?" Jennifer began to panic as Jonathan showed her the note.

"We have the girl. Bring Elizabeth’s note to 546 Old Town Road by midnight and no one will get hurt." Jennifer read "Oh, Darling." She sobbed as Jonathan pulled her into his arms.
