As Time Goes By

The story is based around the Coast-Wide Dock scandal investigation where a Vice President of Hart Industries is involved and is fired by Mr. Hart. The Vice President eventually tries to get back at Mr. Hart, but, the Hart's as usual get out of it and all ends well.

The Harts are flying home in their jet from the trip to Canada where they had to be present for the reading of Max's WILL. Both are silent and saddened of Max’s death. Jennifer begins to cry and Jonathan consoles her and tells her that all will be alright and they have to get on with their lives without Max, whom they both adored dearly.

Jennifer moves to where Max always sat on the jet, lifts the arm rest where Max had stored many little trinkets that the Harts’ had given him. There was a picture of Jennifer and Jonathan’s wedding day, and she chuckles in between tears and turns to Jonathan.

Jennifer: Darling, remember when we got married and Max gave you away, and he cried, he loved you like his own son. Darling I will miss him so much.

Jonathan: Tightening his lips and said how well I remember, and a flash-back of Max came to mind. I loved that man so much, but darling, Max wouldn’t want us to carry on like this, you know what he said when the WILL was read, he wants us to go on with our lives.

Jennifer: I know darling, Jonathan but, do you think we can live in the Corporate Condo until we get adjusted without Max? I really don’t want to go back to the house knowing that Max is not there better yet, maybe we can sell the house and get something else.

Jonathan: Looking at Jennifer sadly, he said I think we can arrange that. We will go directly there, and I will arrange to have our things moved from the house.

Jennifer: Oh thank you darling, I do love you,…she goes to Jonathan to give him a kiss, and he kisses her in return on the neck.

Jonathan: Darling you do know we cannot stay too long at the Condo, I am only semi-retired and I need a place for business meetings and a larger place for entertaining clients.

Jennifer: Darling I know. We will go see a Realtor tomorrow, and see what is available.

Both look at each other and nod with a yes.

Next morning, Jonathan goes off to the office and leaves Jennifer still sleeping as she is exhausted from the trip from Canada. After spending a few hours at the office and getting their things arranged to be moved to the condo, Jonathan arrives home early in the afternoon.

Jonathan: Darling, I’m home and guess what? I heard of an estate that is on the market on Beverly Hills Drive. Want to go look at it?

Jennifer rushed to kiss him, and says, of course, let’s go, and off they go. They loved the place and bought it. Jonathan arranges for everything from Willow Pond Road to be moved, as Jennifer refused to go there, and they move into the new home within weeks, and are very happy. Jonathan likes the idea of a guard at the Security Gate since Jennifer will be left alone with only Freeway, Jr. He hates to go off without her.

Jennifer: Well Jonathan this is a perfect place for us to spend the rest of our lives together and with Freeway, Jr. But, darling I will miss Willow Pond Road...feeling sad as she unpacks a carton.

Jonathan: I will miss the house as well, but you know darling, I am only semi-retired, and I will still have to be in touch with the Officers of Hart Industries...he also feeling sad while going through cartons of books for his library.

Jennifer: I know, but, just think of all the wonderful times we had there...as she unpacks a carton of pictures and unpacks a picture of Max. Look darling, a picture of Max...She gets up to sit next to Jonathan…she is sad begins to cry, he holds her and kisses her.

Jonathan: Now come on darling, no more tears. Oh that’s a great picture, put it on the piano next to ours…tightening his lips a little and a flash-back with Max in the background smiling.

Jennifer: Look darling, pictures of the Golden Goose Health Spa. Remember when we went there to look into the death of our friend Sam Roberts, and the bouncer they had, I think her name was Jane, boy did she bounce you around. I don’t think she liked you too well.

Jonathan: Yeah, I really think she had it in for me, guess I didn’t give her a tumble. That’s because you were there darling, and my heart belongs only to you. I guess I was snooping around too much. They all had it in for me, they knew from the beginning that I was Jonathan Hart and a friend of Sam Roberts, and then there was that Sylvia Maxwell, she was something else, do you remember her?

Jennifer: How well I remember her, strange but nice. You know I really liked her.

By late afternoon, the Harts are very exhausted. Jennifer and Jonathan take a break, lean up against pillows by the fireplace sipping white wine. Both doze off without supper and awake with a knock on the door, and Jonathan answers the door. It is Security asking if everything is okay, we saw lights sir, just checking. Oh! Thank you for checking, everything is fine says Jonathan. They have a light supper and go to bed.

Next morning, Jennifer is preparing breakfast

Jonathan: You know darling, you have to interview some housekeepers, there is no need for you to cook and clean. Do you want me to ask around the office today, or do you want to call an Agency?

Jennifer: No, I will take care of it, I have someone in mind. Darling, you're going to the office today? I thought we were going to meet with the decorator for drapes and things.

Jonathan: Yes, I am, but, I will be home early. I want to check out that merger with the London Office, remember when I went there and I bought you the Albany for your birthday? That was some automobile. I wonder if the Soviet Spies have been released from prison yet.

Jennifer: I remember them, she really had the hots for you, and really wanted the Albany, but, remember that Steven Thomas who tried to pass off as my once removed cousin? You know since I hadn’t seen him in a long time, we were small children the last I saw him, I guess he could have been my cousin, but, I really didn’t remember him. We certainly run into the strangest people.

Jonathan: Yes darling, I remember him, he was involved with the coast-wide dock scandal involving Hart Shipping Line’s vice President, not with the Russian Spies. Remember when I went to the ship to be a Longshoreman, and you thought I went fishing. I went fishing alright, and it wasn’t for fish. They were after me, and they were going to hurt the most important thing in my life, you.

Jennifer: Oh, your so sweet. Then when my real cousin showed up, he really had to convince you that he was who he said he was as you wouldn’t let him get near me.

Jonathan: That’s for sure, no one gets near you, except me.

Jennifer: Oh, your sweet I do love you.

Jonathan: And, I do love you, and I always will. Have I told you that lately?

Jennifer: Yes, last night, but, not in so many words.

The next day Jonathan goes to the office to get a report from Stanley Freison on the London merger. There are still a few minor details to be cleared up, and Jonathan gets Stanley to take care of things as he heads for home.

Jonathan: Darling I’m home.

Jennifer: Oh that was quick, not complaining just happy to see you. Gives him a kiss, and he kisses her on the neck.

Jonathan: Stanley Freison is handling things quite well, I have a meeting with him tomorrow. How did you make out with a housekeeper?

Jennifer: I have an appointment with them next week.

Jonathan: Sounds great, what’s for supper, or shall we go out to a restaurant of your choice.

Jennifer: No, I will prepare a new recipe that I think you will like, a nice salad, and some terrific dessert.

Jonathan: Dessert, wow, sounds great.

Next day, Jonathan leaves for the office. A call comes to the office that the coast-wide dock scandal hearing is set for tomorrow in Washington. Jonathan seems quite puzzled and buzzes Liz, his Secretary, to come in.

Liz: Yes Mr. Hart?

Jonathan: Has any documentation come in about a coast-wide dock scandal meeting scheduled for tomorrow?

Liz: No sir, I didn’t see anything. Do you want me to get Stanley Frieson and ask him if he knows anything about it?

Jonathan: Yes, please do, and also get my Washington Office on the phone, I want to speak with Jim.

Liz: Mr. Hart, Stanley Frieson does not know anything of this meeting, and Jim from the Washington office is on line 2.

Mr. Hart: Thanks, Liz.

Jim: Hello Mr. Hart, how are you? What can I do for you.

Mr. Hart: Jim, do you know anything about this coast-wide dock scandal meeting scheduled for tomorrow?

Jim: Tomorrow? No I don’t Mr. Hart. Do you want me to check around?

Mr. Hart: No, that’s alright, Jim, I am going to fly out anyway and find out what is going on, something sounds very suspicious.

Jim: Okay, Mr. Hart, will you be stopping by?

Mr. Hart: Yes, I will, we can have lunch, and if not, dinner. Bye, Jim.

Jim: Sounds great, see you tomorrow, call when you get in.

Jonathan sits back in his office chair, puzzled, and wonders how he will tell Jennifer that he is going to Washington, and without her. Since the Director’s meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, she will have to attend to make a quorum. Therefore, he gets Jennifer on the phone, to prepare her.

Jonathan: Darling, I have a meeting tomorrow in Washington, and I need you to be present at the Director’s Meeting to make a quorum, here in my office.

Jennifer: I must attend the Director’s Meeting and you must go to Washington on such short notice, Jonathan are you sure about this? Darling, why on such short notice?

Jonathan: Darling, I don’t know why, but, it is scheduled and I need to go.

Jennifer: Well, all right, I’ll go to the meeting but I will feel nervous about it; I will miss you, I feel lost without you.

Jonathan: I feel lost without you also, but you will be okay, you need not be nervous, just sit and listen.

Jonathan comes in early to pack a few things.

Jonathan: Darling, are you here?

Jennifer: Of course, I’m here, I had freeway out back taking care of his needs. We were invited out to dinner.

Jonathan: Where?

Jennifer: My Dad is in Los Angeles, he is on his way to the Orient and called for us to meet him for dinner.

Jonathan: That’s wonderful.

They have dinner with him, and get home early, as Jennifer’s dad has an early flight in the morning.

Next day, Jonathan and Jennifer are at the Hart jet saying their good-byes.

Jonathan: I will miss you, but I will only be gone a day, two at the most.

Jennifer: I will miss you too.

Jonathan: Don’t forget go straight to the office, I will miss you...he kisses her.

Jennifer: Bye, darling... she kisses him back.

Jonathan: Bye darling, be careful, I will call you first chance I get, I love you, Liz is expecting you…he waits for her to leave the airport…pilot comes out.

Pilot: We have clearance for take-off Mr. Hart… it is not Frank Jonathan’s regular pilot. Jonathan seems concerned, doesn’t say anything until Jennifer leaves.

Jonathan: Where is my regular pilot, Frank?

Pilot: He called in sick sir, I am his replacement, is there a problem with this?

Jonathan: No, just let me see your papers and your identification.

Pilot: Everything in order sir?

Jonathan: I guess so, let’s get going.

As Jonathan gets on the plane, he notices another person as a co-pilot (Jonathan is always co-pilot with Frank).

Jonathan: Who are you?

Co-pilot: Just sit down and be quiet.

Jonathan realizes that something is wrong, but, cannot do anything about it as the plane is taking off. He hears a moan and looks back only to see Frank gagged.

Jonathan: Frank, what happened, are you okay? (Jonathan gets out of his seat to help Frank, and ungaggs him).

Frank: I am okay Mr. Hart.

Jonathan: What is going on?

Frank: I do not know, Mr. Hart, but they are terrorists, and the plane is being hi-jacked.

The plane is airborne and the co-pilot yells back to both of them to stay put and buckle up, and no one will get hurt. We are not going to Washington; I will let you know where we are going just as soon as we hear of the conditions at your office Mr. Hart. Jonathan is stunned, and worried as Jennifer is on her way.

Jennifer arrives at the office.

Liz: Hello Mrs. Hart. You know, I cannot believe all of this has come up so suddenly, and Mr. Hart had to go to Washington, I don’t like it, and I am worried.

Mrs. Hart: Why Liz, what makes you say that?

Liz: It sounds suspicious, Mrs. Hart. We never received any documentation of a meeting. We received documents from the Washington Office last week, and there was no mention of any meeting scheduled. When I talked to Stanley Freison he thought that it was strange also, and he is concerned, Stanley Freison being the CEO of Hart Industries.

Mrs. Hart: Liz, try to get Mr. Hart on the phone, they should be airborne by now.

As Liz tries to make the call, a person comes to Liz’s desk and tells her to hang up pointing a gun at her. As Mrs. Hart enters Jonathan’s office a man is sitting in his chair. No other members of the Board are in Jonathan’s office.

Jennifer: Who are you and what do you want?

The man (terrorist) points a gun at her, and another pushes Liz into the office and tells both of them to sit down.

Terrorist: Now young lady, you get Mr. Hart on the phone and tell him to drop the charges on the coast-wide dock scandal or we will blow up Hart Industries.

Liz gets the pilot and she asks to speak to Mr. Hart.

Pilot: It’s your Secretary - do as we tell you and no one will get hurt. We want you to stop the investigation.

Jonathan: Yes, Liz?

Liz: Mr. Hart, you must stop the investigation, our floor is being held hostage by terrorists with guns. Somehow, they passed Security.

Mr. Hart: Are you and Mrs. Hart okay?

Liz: No sir, they are pointing guns at us.

Jonathan: Put Mrs. Hart on the phone.

Liz: Okay sir, Mrs. Hart, Mr. Hart wants to speak with you.

Jonathan: Darling, are you alright? Listen to me carefully. Remember the steps I had put in?…Jonathan hinting to Jennifer to take secret steps.

Jennifer: We are alright darling, and yes, I do remember, but, are you alright?

Jonathan: Yes, I am. If you can find a way try to get in touch with someone in Security and have them contact me right away, if not me, have them call the police.

Jennifer: OK, darling, I will try but it will not be easy.

Jonathan: Try darling, try.

Jennifer: Liz, we must go and get someone from one of the other offices to talk to these men and clear this up, perhaps from Security.

Terrorist: No chance lady, you and she stay put.

Mrs. Hart: You can send one of your men with us.

Terrorist: Just a minute let me check.

With that, Jennifer and Liz are left alone. Jennifer takes Liz by the hand and they go out a secret door in Jonathan’s office, and take the steps down to the next level. The door is locked and they have no where to go. Jennifer raps on the door quietly and hopes that someone walking in the hall will hear her. No luck, that floor is being held hostage also, but Jennifer does not know this.

The terrorist returns and has no idea where they have gone, and runs around looking for them. He has no idea that there is a secret door which Jonathan had put in purposely just in case he had to get out in a hurry.

Jennifer and Liz have no choice now but to go back up. They go directly to the roof of the building, as the door to Jonathan’s office only opens out, not in. Being very windy on the roof, they have no idea how they can get any help. A secretary from the building adjacent to Hart Industries sees Liz. She knows Liz and opens the window, trying to yell out to her "what are you doing up there?" Liz cannot hear her because of the wind. The secretary gets her boss as she realizes that Liz and Jennifer are in danger…her boss calls the police, since he is unable to get Security at Hart Industries.

Meanwhile back on the plane, co-pilot and pilot speak to each other

Co-pilot: Is everything going as scheduled?

Pilot: Yeah, we should touch down shortly.

Jonathan: Where are we going?

Co-pilot: Shut up.

Jonathan: What do you plan to do with us?

Co-pilot: You, Mr. Hart, if you do not cooperate, we will start to eliminate hostages, starting with you, or better yet Mrs. Hart first, and then your Secretary.

Jonathan: I will be worth nothing if you get rid of me, and as for Mrs. Hart and my Secretary, they have nothing to do with this.

Co-pilot: Shut up Mr. Millionaire. (he gets up and comes to the back of the plane wanting to hit Mr. Hart, then goes back to the bathroom).

Jonathan: Frank, we have to try and get control here.

Frank: Yes, I know…he gives Jonathan the eye that there are tools under the seat in a compartment and rope.

Jonathan: Frank, listen carefully, we have to get this plane turned around - my floor at Hart Industries is being held hostage by friends of these bullies, could be other floors also.

Frank: What do you think we should do, Mr. Hart?

Jonathan: Get a tool, and as soon as this character comes out of the bathroom, hit him with it and tie him up. I will take care of the pilot.

Frank: Ok, Mr. Hart, good-luck.

As the co-pilot comes back out again, Frank hits him in the head and knocks him out, and ties him up. Jonathan then jumps up, goes in the cockpit, hits the pilot, the Hart Jet goes out of control and Jonathan is unable to get the pilot from behind the controls. The pilot swings around hits Jonathan very hard and he goes flying to the floor. Jonathan gets up and hits the pilot again hard and knocks him out. The plane is now in a nose-dive, and Jonathan must work fast to get the pilot out of the seat and take control of the plane. Frank comes up to help him and ties up the pilot. Jonathan gets the plane under control, and turns the plane around and heads back to Los Angeles. Frank then takes over for Jonathan, both are pretty well beaten.

Jonathan notifies his Limo Service to be picked up at his jet for transportation to Hart Industries.

Jonathan: Frank, are you okay to be left alone. I must get to Hart Industries. Call the police get these guys in police custody.

Frank: Yeah sure Mr. Hart, I’ll be okay, you do what you have to, I’ll take care of them.

Meanwhile back at Hart Industries Jennifer and Liz are still on the roof. As they look down, they can see police cars in front of the building. Jennifer tells Liz that they must go back down, it is too windy up there.

Mrs. Hart: Liz, we have to take our chances, we must go back.

Liz: I guess we have to, good luck.

They both go down and attempt to open the door, when the door opens quickly the terrorist smiles at them and says, gotcha.

Jonathan makes it to Hart Industries, and sees the police. He tells them what is going on and to hang loose, just in case the back up Security has also been taken over by the terrorists. Sure enough, it has, and Jonathan and the police try to figure out how they can get up to Jonathan’s office without the terrorists seeing them.

Jonathan tries to call up there to speak with Liz or Jennifer pretending that he is in Washington, is unable to get through. He then calls Stanley Freison on the Private Line in Stanley’s Office and speaks with Stanley very discretely. Stanley confirms that all are being held hostage.

The terrorists in the building do not know that the terrorists on the plane have been captured and that Jonathan is back in Los Angeles and at Hart Industries building. Jonathan must make a decision. He calls his Washington Office and speaks with Jim. He tells Jim to make a call to one of the private lines and have them think that Jonathan is in Washington, and to put him on all the speaker phones, Jim agrees, the call comes through, and one of the terrorists picks up the phone.

Jonathan: This is Jonathan Hart, I am being held by your colleagues, I am doing as I am told, please release everyone that are being held hostage at Hart Industries.

Terrorist: Let me speak to one of my friends.

Jonathan: They are not available, but, please release everyone.

Terrorist: Your in no position to make a deal like that Mr. Hart we need proof. But, I will tell you what, we will let all the women in the offices go, we will keep all the men hostage, Mrs. Hart and your Secretary.

Jonathan: Why hold Mrs. Hart and my Secretary, they have nothing to do with this.

Terrorist: That’s the deal, take it or leave.

Jonathan then agrees to have all the women released. Knowing that Jennifer and Liz are still being held, he tells the police we will have to make a move fast. The building begins to empty out, and everyone was very calm. With that Mr. Hart and the police get to an elevator as people are coming out. They must get to the top floor where Jennifer and Liz are being held. As the elevator stops and they get out, they hide behind the receptionist’s deck where they are able to get a view of Jonathan’s office, as his doors are open wide. Jennifer sees Jonathan, but makes no move or indication that she sees him. She puts up two fingers to let him know that there are two terrorists in the office. Jonathan sees the fire alarm switch and he pulls it. At this point the fire doors close, and the top floor is sealed off from the rest of the building. One terrorist comes out of the office to see what is going on, and as he approaches, Jonathan jumps him. The police make their move by getting past Jonathan and rushing through the doors to Jonathan’s office. Jennifer is standing next to the other terrorist, she swings around and pushes the terrorist toward the police. The terrorist is captured and Jonathan comes in to help the police and grab the gun of the terrorist as the police hand cuff him.

Jonathan runs to Jennifer, hugs her and consoles her as she and Liz are crying. He then hugs Liz and thanks her for her bravery and not giving up. Jonathan makes sure that Liz gets home safely by having his Limo driver take her home. Tells her that he wants her to take time off, and he and Jennifer will stop by to see her, she nods her head. Jonathan notifies Liz’s husband of the incident, tells him to be home if he can when she arrives, as she is very upset, and her husband agrees to be there when she gets in…he thanks Jonathan, Jonathan thanks him as well…Jonathan then hugs Jennifer again

Jonathan: Let’s go home darling.

As they arrive home Jennifer still being very upset Jonathan keeps her in his arms until she is feeling better. Gives her a brandy…she laughs.

Jennifer: No dinner tonight darling, boy, do I miss Max.

Jonathan: Me too darling, but, I tell you what, I will take you to a restaurant of your choice, what will it be?

Jennifer: Oh, let’s not, I can fix us something. I am not too terribly hungry anyway, I’m too scared to even think about food.

Jonathan: Neither am I, why don’t I fix something , perhaps a salad, and dessert.

Jennifer: Oh, I like that.

Jonathan and Jennifer sit and talk about the ordeal at Hart Industries after dinner and he tells her how proud he is of her for trying her best to get free and taking care of Liz.

Jennifer: I am tired, let’s forget everything and listen to some nice soft music and relax.

Jonathan holds her in his arms as they sit on the couch, Freeway along side.

Jonathan: How about a little more wine.

Jennifer: Oh, why not…she dozes off in his arms.

Jonathan: Good night, darling…he kisses her.

The next morning Jonathan goes to the office for a short meeting with all the Executives and Heads of all the departments. Thanks them all for taking care of their people and protecting them. He shuts down Hart Industries for a nice long week end, tells everyone to relax and try to forget what had happened and thank god no one was injured. He thanks Stanley Frieson personally for taking care of things so well, dismisses the meeting, and sends everyone home.

Jonathan then calls Jennifer to meet him for lunch and she agrees. They talk about the decorating that needs to be done in their new home. Jennifer wants everything done in time for the office party that they are having and Jonathan agrees. After lunch, they go to the decorator, to the Art Gallery, after a full afternoon of shopping they go home.

Jennifer: Darling remember the last office party we had at the house on Willow Pond Road and that girl Peggy from your office tried to kill me because she loved you so much? What ever happened to her?

Jonathan: Yes, I do remember her. She is still in an institution, and then do time for attempted murder.

After a long day of shopping they head for bed, exhausted.

The next morning.

Jonathan: What are your plans for today, darling?

Jennifer: I am going to see if the drapes are ready for delivery along with the rugs, and the Art Dealer to find out when the paintings will be ready, and hopefully everything will be done by the end of this week. Want to come with me.

Jonathan: Thought you’d never ask. While you are doing all of this, I want to stop at a Smoke Shop to pick up some cigars.

Jennifer: Great, but I would like to go with you to send some cigars or a new pipe to my Dad.

Jonathan: Sounds great, I always want you with me.

Jennifer: I must be back by 5 pm, as I have a couple who use to be with the Coopers coming for an interview. Do you want me to ask them anything special?

Jonathan: No, I am sure you can handle it, but, I will be there if you need me for anything.

The Harts return home after shopping and are exhausted, have a snack, and Jennifer waits for the couple, as Jonathan goes off to take care of Freeway’s needs. After speaking with the couple, Jennifer hires them; they move in the following Monday.

Jennifer: Darling I hired Maria and her husband James. They seem to be well qualified for our needs, and they are very happy to be able to work for us.

Jonathan: Call the Coopers and get a recommendation.

Jennifer: I spoke with them before I even talked to the couple, the Coopers recommended them highly.

Jonathan: Do the Coopers like their new home?

Jennifer: Yes they do, and they were very disappointed that Maria and James were unable to go with them, they really enjoyed having them work for them.

Jonathan: Lucky us, after the place is fixed up and Maria and James move in I think we need a vacation.

Jennifer: Ooh, that sounds great, what do you have in mind?

Jonathan: We will fly out to the ranch. I am sure you will want to see Cochise and Roxy. We can take Maria and James with us, I am sure they would like to meet Roxy.

Jennifer: Will we get any time to be alone?

Jonathan: You can count on it, no meetings, no phones, no terrorists, just you and me. We can go to our one room cabin, and who knows…they both giggle.

Jennifer: Jonathan your a romantic. I am tired we had a full day, think I’ll turn in. Want to come with me?

Jonathan tightens his lips with a grin.

Jonathan: Need you ask? As they turn in and talk a little, Jonathan tells Jennifer to look under her pillow.

Jennifer: Why, did the tooth fairy leave me something?

Jonathan: Maybe.

Jennifer looks under her pillow, and there is a beautiful diamond bracelet with a card attached…"FOR BEING SUCH A BRAVE AND WONDERFUL WIFE…I LOVE YOU SO VERY MUCH."

Jennifer: (giggles) For me? Oh, I do love you too.

They embrace, both say Good night darling. Look up to the heavens and both say Good Night Max…Freeway barks.
