Welcome to the story of a Extraordinary trotting filly ! She was born in the spring of 93 and raised in the hills of Kentucky with the name Nursery Rhyme. She grew (and grew !) there by the side of her mother Nans Catch, one of historys special trotters herself ! Through luck and great breeding she started to grow and look like a special horse. After a year and a half it was time for her to head to the sales ring.It was at the sale that she caught the eye of trainer Bill Andrewsand his owners E.C. Smith and his son David Smith. Through the insistence of E.C., they bought her for $87,000.00 and then sold part of her to a long time friend Dr. Foster. It was soon after this that her name was changed to Moni Maker! The name we all have come to know over the last few years. She then was given time till her trip to Florida to begin the next part of her rise to greatness !
She arrived in Florida and began her breaking to the cart and all just like a thousand other horses. She broke to everything like she had been doing it for ever. She seemed and acted like a "aged" horse from the begining , showing her brains and class. She trained down and got herself prepared for what laid ahead.
It was april of 95 and it was time for her to head to Vernon N.Y. for the next leg of her adventure. She showed her ability to her trainers every time on the track. It was the middle of June and she started her racing with a few baby races. She was rushed and she made a few mistakes. She also started to show her advanced growth would be a problem for her two-year old season. Moni Maker went on to win some N.Y. Sires Stake races. These wins include a win at Saratoga (a half mile track) in 2:04:1. She also won (and took her two-year old record) the consolation to the Merrie Annibelle in 1:58:1. And year end earnings of$72,000.00. It was soon after this that growth problems would have to stop her two year old season. She was quit with in the begining of October and given time to mature.
Coming back to training at Pompano Park on the first of Jan. 96. Moni Maker started of and showed she was ready to get on with the career that memories are made of ! It was April and she went to the races ! She started her first race of the year with a win ! And she would not let another horse get ahead of her at the wire till Oct. of the same year but 17 starts later. Moni Maker won 18 in a row and 19 of 20 for the year with 1 second. She was to win ALL of her N.Y. Sires Stakes starts including the $150,000.00 final in Yonkers! The other races she won were the Currier + Ives, Reynolds Stake (track Record time), Simcoe Stake, Zwieg Stake, and not least she won the Hambeltonian Oaks in straight heats in record time . It was the in Oaks that she took her three year old record of 1:54:1. Moni Maker was to win $677,000.00 in 96 that took her career earnings to just shy of $750,000.00 She was purchased by Lindy Farms mid summer but was to be kept in the same stable and controlled by the Smith group till the end of her three year old season. Moni Maker was to win her last start of the year in Pompano in the Matron Stake and was given a well deserved rest ! Through this all MoniMaker showed all her class and skills !
