Police knew of theft allegation

SEATTLE, April 6

TWO DETECTIVES WERE SUSPENDED with pay two weeks ago, but face allegations of a crime scene theft and cover-up more than two years ago.

‘My initial reaction to (the alleged theft and cover-up) was a feeling of heartache.’

Stamper and Seattle Mayor Paul Schell held a joint news conference Tuesday to discuss some of the negative reports the department has received in the last month, including word of an alleged cover-up.

Prosecutors say that homicide detective Earl “Sonny” Davis allegedly took $10,000 from a crime scene some 2˝ years ago and that his highly respected supervisor, Sgt. Don Cameren, covered up the theft by not taking any action.

While Stamper acknowledged that Internal Affairs may have known of the incident, the chief would not elaborate on the details.
“There is some indication that an inquiry was made and we have what I think is now a satisfactory answer to the concern that was raised,” Stamper said.

The chief said he would be deeply concerned if Internal Affairs knew about the alleged incident, but didn’t follow up with appropriate action. He also cautioned the public not to jump to any conclusion.

“These are at this point allegations and I think the two individuals are entitled to the same fair treatment and due process guaranteed of all citizens,” Stamper said.

The King County prosecutor’s office is investigating the allegations and will make the decision whether or not to bring charges against the detectives. Stamper says the investigation is more than halfway complete.
