Submit your Lena album reviews to this page! I need people to review Lena albums/CDs/tapes that are not listed here. Especially useful would be a track listing and a review together, and if possible, a cover scan. Please e-mail me for further information!

The other day, I went to this jazz-themed restaurant in California called "Mimi's" and they were actually playing Lena's "The Man I Love". Lena's soulful voice came floating out of the low murmur of the restaurant clientele, as they ate their food. They also played contemporaries like Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday and Judy Garland.

Also, Lena has made it to the 100 Greatest Women of Rock 'n' Roll on the VH-1 countdown program of the same name. The list includes greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington and Peggy Lee. Lena lands at Number 62. For the complete list, see the Top 100 Women of Rock 'n' Roll.

Lena serves up the most delicious items on the menu - her work at Metro, including all the outtake - high points of the album include the only two Hugh Martin songs she recorded for Metro - "Brazilian Boogie" and "Love", her sleek and sassy Cole Porter song "Just One of Those Things" from her debut movie "Panama Hattie", all her "Cabin in the Sky" accomplishments, two Rodgers and Hart staples "Where or When" and "The Lady is a Tramp", both from their 1937 show "Babes in Arms" and from her movie "Words and Music" (1948).

Sirens of Swing : Great Songs of the 30s and 40s (1999) by Platinum Entertainment, Inc.

Lena is featured on the cover of this 4-CD set along with other great vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Jo Stafford, and Billie Holiday. On Disc 1, she sings "Little Girl Blue" with the barest of accompaniments by Phil Moore and his Orchestra and this helps her pull the song off and convey the sense of sadness effectively. The recording is from October 1946. "Little Girl Blue" was originally written by Rodgers and Hart for their 1935 show "Jumbo".
On Disc 4, she sings "One For My Baby" with Horace Henderson's Orchestra, recorded 21 November, 1944.

The other great recordings and vocalists include "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe" by Frances Wayne (1945), "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" by Dinah Shore (1947), "It's Only a Paper Moon" by Lee Wiley (1945), "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me" by Ella Fitzgerald (1941), "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)" by Billie Holiday (1944) and "La Vie En Rose" by Edith Piaf (1946). This set is a must-have for your collection, if you like those great female vocalists.
