Chapter 10: A Disturbing Phone Call

"Are you going to be a big movie star?" Brett asked in the car.

"No, Brett. For the LAST time, it's Broadway. Hardly anyone cares about Broadway, but it's a big step from where I am right now!" Kalle said, obviously annoyed already.

"Oh. But, you'll still be famous??"

"Yes, I guess so!" Kalle sighed, hoping her brother would just shut up!!

Finally, after much begging, Brett did shut up so Kalle got to studying her lines. She had sooo many! And she also noticed all the kissing she had to be doing. She had to kiss two different people. This, is the life, she thought smiling. But, what would Colin think? I know he won't be to happy about this. Hmmm...maybe he dosen't have to know... she was starting to think of a plan...

"WE'RE HOOOOOMMMEEE!" Brett screamed as they pulled in the driveway, some 3 hours later. Kalle had been so absorbed in her lines that the time had flown by! She thought she had gotten the first couple scenes down. But, she realized that her 1st real scene was pretty risque. Her and 'Chuck' did a song called "The Girl Get's Around" and it involves a few sexually oriented dance moves. Colin would NOT like that!!!

"Kalle...earth to Kalle...you can get out of the car now!" Brett yelled from the front porch.

"Oh! Sorry...I'm coming." She gathered up her script and went inside to see her dad. "Dad! Guess what??" she exclaimed when she saw him.

"What, hon?" he asked.

"I got an audition for the lead in the Broadway play, Footloose!!" she cried.

"Wow! I'm so proud of you, c'mere!" he said, motioning for a hug. Kalle always loved her dad!

Just then the telephone rang, and her mother beat her to the phone. "Kalle, it's for you. It's Briana."

"Ok...thanks! Hello?"

"Hey Kalle, how was your trip?" Briana asked. Briana had been Kalle's friend since kindergarden. They shared every last secret with each other. Kalle's mom didn't like her because Briana knew more about Kalle than she did!

"It was soo awesome Bri...you wouldn't believe who I ran into!" Kalle gushed. "It was Jeremy Kushnier!!"

The girls exchanged squeals on the phone. Briana knew all about Jeremy because they had gone to the show together.

"OMIGOD really? You're joking, aren't you?"

"Nope, I really did meet him. But that's not even the best part. He asked me....to try out for Footloose...and I'm going next week!!!!!!!" she practically yelled into the phone.

"NO WAY!!!" Briana screamed.

"Yes way!!" Meanwhile someone beeped in on the other line. "Hold on a sec Bri I have another call."
"Hello?"

"Hey Kalle! How are you? How was your trip? How was the show?" Colin's sweet voice spoke into the phone.

"I'm doing great Col! The trip was great, and the show rocked. But you'll never guess who I met!" she said..wondering what she should say.

"Hmm...well, I dunno. I'm bad at guessing, you know that!"

"That's right...well, it was Jeremy Kushnier!"

"Oohhhh..biggie. Jeremy Kushnier.." he retorted. Colin never liked Jeremy because he knew Kalle had a big crush...so Kalle had to watch what she said...

"Yep! And guess what he did for me?" Kalle said, ignoring his sarcasm.

"Humor me.." Col said disappointedly.

"He got me an audition for Footloose!"

"You're kidding, right?"

"Nope, totally serious babe. I am going to NYC next week!"

"Hooonnnn...we have our anniversary next week. How long are you gonna be there??" he whined.

"Oooohhh...shit!!! I'm so sorry Col. Can we celebrate early? This is really important!"

"More important than me? Just so you can go work with Jeremy?" he said, obviously hurt.

"Col, you know it's not like that. Can you hold on for a sec?" she asked.

"Yeah, I guess." Kalle clicked back to Briana.

"Hey, you still there?" Kalle asked.

"Yeah! Is Colin on the other line? I'll let you go."

"Ok, thanks a lot. I'll call you right back! Bye." Kalle said, as she clicked back to Colin.
"I'm back, Col," she started, "and I'm really sorry that I have to miss our anniversary. But you know that I love you."

"Yes, I know, but you just disappoint me, Kalle. I wanted this year to be special."

"And I promise to make it up to you as soon as possible." Kalle pleaded.

"Ok, well, I just wanted to check in with you. I'll call you tomorrow." Colin said, dejectedly.

"Bye, I love you!" Kalle replied.

"Bye." Colin said and hung up.

Kalle hung up the phone and started to cry. Why couldn't things go her way? Why did there always have to be something that stood in her way to happiness. She didn't know, and didn't want to think about it anymore, so she went up to her room and began to unpack, so she could pack again.
