About SVFC
The Schodack Valley Fire Company is different than most departments or companies. The membership owns the building and grounds and they are governed by the Board of Directors. The company charges the district for rental of the apparatus bays. The area covered by Schodack Valley is a district where there is a tax on the property owners to supply and maintain equipment. The District is approximately 15 square miles and is mostly residential. There is some prime property for sale that is zoned commercial and the district is looking forward to its development. The district currently protects 1,800 to 1,850 homes and business containing approximately 5000 residents. The Schodack Valley Fire Company is comprised of approximately 45 volunteer professionals who live and work with in or around the district. The department has grown in big leaps over the last 10-15 years. We started EMS service in the late 1980's and have provided BLS service to the district residents. The Schodack Valley Emergency Medical Service works in cooperation with the Castleton Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Nassau Ambulance Squad. Those two organizations provide ambulance services to the fire district. Presently the fire department answers on the average of 250-300 calls per year, averaging 100-120 EMS calls. The District contains 4 busy highways that Schodack Valley answers alarms on. We cover approximately 2 miles of NY Routes 9&20 known as Columbia Turnpike. We also cover about 2 1/2 miles of NY Route 20 from the split of 9&20 and approximately 3 miles of NY Route 9 from the junction of 9&20. When the Interstate System was built, the I-90 connector to the Berkshire Spur passed through the middle of the district. Currently we cover about 2 1/2 miles of I-90, east and west bound lanes, from Exit 11 going east. The Department provides Extrication at auto accidents and trains extensively in this field of rescue. We are currently working on a possible consolidation of town departments to provide service to the Town of Schodack. We are currently responding to all structure fires with Castleton, Schodack Landing and South Schodack fire departments as they also respond to Schodack Valley. This is only in the trial stages at this time. The Department upgraded to 4" hose in anticipation of district growth.
Schodack Valley is dispatched by the Rensselaer County Communications Center. The county changed over to an 800MHz system for improved communications with and around the fire ground. Disbatching is done over both the 800MHz system and low band 46.100MHz.
