The beautiful, but deadly, Mrs. Emma Peel!

It is the early 1960's, and a dashing, debonair English gentleman of impeccable manners and good taste; is teamed with a Doctor intent on solving mysteries and helping those in need. The popularity of the charismatic young gentleman, played by Patrick Macnee, soon overshadows his Medicinal companion. The Doctor retires, and Agent Extraordinare, John Steed takes up the clarion call! His bumbershoot and bowler ready to do battle, he was soon doubled with the lovely Honor Blackman (...of "Goldfinger" fame). Her abilities notwithstanding; she was soon replaced by the beautiful, but deadly, Diana Rigg, competently masquerading as... Mrs. Emma Peel! Argueably, the most effective duo in the history of Continental Espionage! Fortunately for her, but sadly for her many fans, Mrs. Peel's long-lost husband eventually resurfaced, leaving Steed in the capable, voluptuous arms of a young Tara King, played by Linda Thorson...But that is a tale for another day!

After years of saving England and the "Free World" from all manner of dastardly villains, deadly and bizarre; the erstwhile team encountered the most insidious nemesis of all! The B.B.C. - Bring Back Complacency - A huge multimedia conglomerate, bent on controlling the will, (...and purse strings!), of their World Wide constituency! The immense resources of these villains, were more than our trusted stalwarts could bear, and so heeding the advice of their "Mother", our heroes went into hiding.

Two usurpers to the throne!

Years later (the late nineties to be more precise), two very badly made clones, attempted to lure the dynamic duo out of hiding by filming a so-called "exploit" of derring-do. The film was lacking in chemistry, and the villain preposterous, even by the otherwise expected standards! Fortunately, very few people were fooled. This was a costly mistake, and very embarassing for the villainous B.B.C., and their partners in crime, the notorious and lethal Warner Brothers, who were not amused!

Doctor Armstrong's strong arm!

Throughout their busy crime-fighting, spy-smashing careers; Steed and Emma put waste to many diabolical plots, Masterminds, and monsters! Dr. Armstrong's unstoppable Cybernauts, the Positive-Negative Man, the notorious Hellfire Club, the terrifying "House That Jack Built", and the nefarious organization known as "A.U.N.T.I.E."; to name but a few! Who would have thought that the very folk they so dilligently defended would eventually turn their backs upon them! There is great EVIL afoot, and we need them now, more than ever!

GREAT NEWS!!! The ENCORE/MYSTERY channel now airs "THE AVENGERS" Monday-Friday at 7:00PM EDT!!! I've managed to catch several Cathy Gale episodes, and it's very interesting to watch the early development of the series. Prior to Honor Blackman, there were a few other "companions". Of course Ian Hendry played the original "Avenger", or more accurately "Police Surgeon" Dr. Keel...Julie Stevens played an attractive, night-club singer (...with a horrible voice!...), named Venus Smith and...finally, John Rollason portrayed Dr. Martin King.

With the first Emma Peel episode "The Town of No Return", I was struck by the total change in format, which is why, I believe the show became so popular. Laurie Johnson's scores were a vast improvement on the previous themes, and the slightly more fantastic edge on the plotlines, allowed for Diana Rigg to step into new, but comfortable shoes. The recording quality, also seemed much improved.

While handcuffed to CATHY GALE and an overhead pipe, STEED makes fun of the situation, by calling out for a particular "animal". HONOR BLACKMAN finds this amusing. Perhaps because of the reference to her role in a famous film?"DRESSED TO KILL" from 1964...What is the animal connection?

Another reference to CATHY'S famous film, can be found in still another episode from the same season. Her particular knowledge of a certain metal, gets her into trouble."THE GILDED CAGE" FROM 1964...What is this precious commodity?
