Extends east from the Triboro Bridge in the South Bronx as the
northern portion of Interstate 278, through the neighborhoods
of Hunts Point, Soundview and Unionport, where it takes over
as Interstate 95 from the eastbound Cross Bronx Expwy in the
massive Bruckner Interchange, into Throggs Neck up to Co-op City,
where it runs directly into the New England Thruway. It was built over a period of over two decades, slowly absorbing its namesake boulevard, just like The Blob. Usually an excellent westbound escape hatch for those who would otherwise end up on the dreaded Cross Bronx, but it makes up for its good deed there, by being a Cross Bronx-style nightmare heading north, once it merges with the northbound Throggs Neck Expwy. |
