Takes the ball handed off by the Bruckner Expwy north of Westchester Avenue and runs with it on through to the Connecticut border, where it changes its name but not its route number, the venerable Interstate 95 designation having been passed along to various expressways and turnpikes ever since its southern genesis in southern Florida. Within New York, the New England Thruway section is run by the New York State Thruway Authority. Why they call it a Thruway as opposed an Expressway, I haven't a clue. Why the truck-friendly highways east of the Mississippi are Expressways as opposed to Freeways, I haven't a clue, since most Expressways are indeed free, although the Thruways generally have tolls, this one grabbing your money soon after you leave the Bronx. |
