Hunger is a reality in many communities across New York State. Venison Donation Program

New York State is full of great big and small game opportunities. From true wilderness bucks in the Adirondacks to trophy racks with a bow in the NYC suburbs. Black bear can be found in the Catskills, Adirondacks and a small section of state forest on the Pennsylvania and Western NY border.

Small game opportunities include: Grouse, Rabbit, Hare, Red and Gray Fox, Coyote, Bobcat, Pheasant, Gray and Red Squirrel, Woodcock, Spring and Fall Turkey, and Waterfowl.

Seasons, allowable firearms, and bag limits vary statewide check with the DEC for exact dates and regulations.

Future Big Game Season Dates

Northern Zone

Archery Season:

Deer and Bear-September 27 through the Friday immediately preceding the next to the last Saturday in October. (September 27 - October 20, 2000; only unfilled 1999-2000 big game tags can be used from September 27-30)

Regular Season:

Deer and Bear-Next to last Saturday in October through the first Sunday in December. (October 21 - December 3, 2000)

Muzzleloading Season:

Deer and Bear-The seven day period ending on the day before the regular season begins. (October 14 - October 20, 2000) (NOTE: For deer there may be additional muzzleloading hunting opportunity at other times, but the timing and other factors may vary. Additional information will be available when licenses go on sale in August)

Early Bear Season:

Bear-First Saturday after the second Monday in September through the day immediately preceding opening of the muzzleloading season. (September 16 - October 13, 2000; only unfilled 1999-2000 bear tags can be used from September 16-30)

Southern Zone

Archery Season:

Deer and Bear-October 15 through the day immediately preceding the opening of regular deer season, and 5 days immediately following close of the regular deer season. (October 15 - November 19, 2000 and December 13 - 17, 2000)

Regular Season:

Deer-First Monday after November 15 through first Tuesday after December 7. (November 20 - December 12, 2000)

Bear/Catskills- First Saturday of regular deer season through first Tuesday after December 7. (November 25 - December 12, 2000)

Bear/Allegany-Second Monday of regular deer season through the first Tuesday after December 7. (November 27 - December 12, 2000)

Muzzleloading Season:

Deer and Bear-The 7 days immediately following close of the regular deer season. (December 13 - 19, 2000)

Westchester County Regular Season: Deer-November 1 through December 31.

Suffolk County Regular Season: Deer-November 1 through December 31.

Suffolk County Special Firearms Season: Deer-First Monday following the first Saturday in January, for three weeks, Monday - Friday only. (January 3 - 21, 2000 Monday-Friday only) (January 8 - 26, 2001 Monday-Friday only)

Privileges: Hunt deer and bear with gun, muzzleloader or bow (with appropriate bow hunting
eligibility)

Privileges: All the privileges that apply to small game and big game hunting and fishing licenses.
